his week’s guest editorial is Georgia-based author, civil rights advocate, and attorney, Roy Miller. Roy Miller has a law practice in Macon, Georgia and has for years been a vocal critic of the N-word. OUR WAR AGAINST BLACK YOUTH MUST STOP By: Attorney Roy Miller February 10, 2013
We are not the people that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. died for or the people that Dr. King saw in his dream. We sacrifice our own children for the sake of imitating people that imitate people. When will the season for hurting Black children be over? How long will the
pains last? How many more parents will have to bury their child? Parents know that children copy the behavior of those that they glorify. We are the enemy, determined to make our youth copy the ways of those that we glorify. We force exposure. What could be so great about a hot music track or celebrity personality that justifies luring your own child to self-destruction? Respect. Why don’t we teach our children to always give respect and to never accept disrespect? We must lead by example. The reason that I have fought against n-word usage is because at it’s worse; it is the ultimate form of disrespect against Blacks. The word was never meant for a human being or a child of God. The n-word was meant for a beast without a God. We announce to God that we are not children of God with every n-word utterance. For everyone to see, place the flag of respect on the highest hill. Conquer that bloody mountain of disrespect called the n-word and place the flag there. Let it be known that all disrespect against children that falls under that mountain will not be tolerated. Leave the children alone. Let them be. I know that adults will always use the n-word and other cuss words. However, we must teach our children that certain language usage is wrong. Those that want to force an enemy into our homes know that we will welcome an enemy, as long as he comes with friends. It is predictable. I spoke up against the n-word usage in Quentin Tarantino’s movie Django for that very reason. For access to entertainment and great celebrity performances, we must also accept the n-word and the acceptance of disrespect. I have seen children in trouble. I have attended funerals of children. Millions of our children are confused and lost. I have seen the Courts, YDCs and Alternative schools filled with our Black
youth. It hurts. Some of our celebrities have no hearts. Our children should not be copying the ways of murderers, drug dealers, prostitutes, hustlers, those that hurt us, those that beat on women and those that have no respect for sex in deadly waters. Our children should be copying the ways of scholars and parents that do an honest day’s work to support their own. Children need to be drawn to home, not away from home. Why do we fight for the right to destroy a young Black mind? We fight so hard. Why? History has shown us with perfection that those that demand respect are always on top and those that accept disrespect are always on the bottom. Let’s not condition youth to accept disrespect. My wish is that all media, especially Black media, will help me get the word out that adults exposing our children to disrespect will not be tolerated. I need the help of people that care. Our kids are God’s kids. We are outnumbered in this war. However, the fight is not fair, because we have God on our side. Help me to help our children. Change begins with us.

News Senator Fuschillo’s Legislation To Protect Children from Drunk Drivers Approved By State Senate Transportation Committee Legislation Would Require Ignition Interlocks in All School Buses

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (RMerrick), Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee, announced today, February 14 that the Committee on state transportation has approved his legislation to protect school children from drunk drivers. “When a parent puts their child on the school bus, they are literally placing their child’s life in the driver’s hands. Requiring ignition interlocks on school buses will help prevent bus drivers from even having the chance to drive drunk and protect children who cannot protect themselves,” said Senator Fuschillo, who is cosponsoring the legislation. Under the legislation, all school buses manufactured after July 1, 2015 for use in New York State would be required to come equipped with an ignition interlock device. The proposed law would also give local Boards of Education the authority to adopt a resolution to install ignition interlocks into school buses manufactured prior to July 1, 2015. Last October, a school bus carrying 5 small children crashed into a Syosset home after its driver passed out behind the wheel. The driver of the bus was charged with five counts each of aggravated DWI under Leandra’s Law, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment and two acounts of DWI. In another incident last October, a school bus driver was pulled over on the Long Island Expressway after 911
operators received reports that he was driving with a shredded tire and had trouble controlling the vehicle. The driver was arrested after police found his blood alcohol level to be .23, ten times the legal limit for a commercial driver. The driver, who also had a half empty vodka bottle with him in the bus, told police that he had just dropped off middle school students from the Three Village School District. "As a parent and as a PTA Co-President, my greatest priority is the safety of our children. Having ignition interlocks in school buses would help give parents a greater peace of mind that their child will be safe when we put them on the bus. I applaud the Committee for approving this proactive legislation," said Al Belbol, Jr., a Merrick parent and co-president of the Levy-Lakeside Elementary School PTA. New York would be the first state in the nation to require ignition interlocks on school buses.

News HANNON SAYS END TAX SURCHARGE ON UTILITY BILLS; GIVE HOMEOWNERS A BREAK “In 2009, Senate Democrats and Governor Paterson enacted a tax surcharge on utility bills that has cost ratepayers almost $2.5 billion over the last four years,” said Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau). “I voted against this tax surcharge because it hurt businesses, hindered job growth and took money away from families, schools, seniors – all New Yorkers that pay energy bills.” Hannon has joined his fellow Senate Republicans to urge Governor Cuomo to remove the proposed extension of this utility tax surcharge from his Executive Budget. The “18-a” surcharge, which has increased utility bills for every taxpayer in the state, is scheduled to expire on March 31, 2014. The Governor’s proposed five-year extension would cost businesses and consumers a total of almost $3 billion. The proposed extension would cost energy ratepayers $509 million for the this year and the following four years, plus an additional $255 million in state fiscal year (SFY) 201819. The total impact of the extension would be $2.8 billion, with most of the burden falling on small and large businesses, especially manufacturers who use large amounts of energy. “The Governor should use the 21-day amendment process to remove the proposed extension from his budget plan,” said Hannon. According to figures from National Grid, the impact of the energy tax extension on a typical large business is estimated at $30,000 per year. The added cost on a typical small business would be about $540 per year and average household bills would increase by $55 per year. “In the past two years, we’ve made great strides in turning our economy around and helping businesses create new jobs,” said Hannon. “We have reduced taxes and made important investments in job creation projects across the state. New Yorkers already pay some of the highest utility rates in the country and they clearly deserve a break. Allowing this surcharge to expire will also help to create jobs and make New York more economically competitive.” Section 18-a of the Public Service Law authorizes an assessment on utility bills to fund the operations of energy-related agencies and authorities. In 2009, Governor Paterson and Senate Democrats imposed this surcharge on electric, gas, steam and nonmunicipal water services. The surcharge was intended to be a temporary measure set to expire on March 31, 2014. The Governor’s proposal seeks to extend this tax an additional five years.
MANGANO ATTRACTS LOS ANGELES-BOUND COMPANY TO NASSAU COUNTY Deal Brings 40 Jobs, Benefit Local Economy to Tune of $58 Million
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and the Nassau Industrial Development Agency (NCIDA) announced on February 4 the approval of an economic development compact that attracts Jesco Lighting Group, a Los Angeles-bound company, to Nassau County, according to a releases obtained by this reporter. The company, Jesco Lighting Group, says the release, will employ 40 fulltime equivalent workers in Port Washington. The compact is estimated to provide $58 million in new economic benefit to Nassau County. County Executive Mangano stated, “Nassau’s economic development team is working hard to create new jobs and opportunities for our residents. Attracting Jesco Lighting Group, along with our success of attracting Hain Celestrial, is good news for Nassau County residents as they provide employment opportunities for our residents.” The compact permits Jesco Lighting Group, now in Glendale, Queens, to move its headquarters to a 66,000 square foot building located at 15 Harbor Park Drive in Port Washington. Jesco plans to spend $5.5 million to purchase the property and another $1 million on renovations and equipment. The project also will result in the creation of 10 construction jobs. The company plans to begin renovation of the building within 30 days of its closing of the compact with completion scheduled six months later. “Not only does this compact bring a new business to Nassau, but it brings 40 jobs to Nassau County. Jesco’s potential move to Los Angeles was a credible threat and I am pleased we were able to bring them to Nassau County,” said Joseph Kearney, executive director of the Nassau IDA. “Without the Nassau County’s help Jesco would not have undertaken this project.” Jesco, founded in 1998, is one of the nation’s fastest-growing lighting manufacturers, offering a comprehensive selection of contemporary, architectural, energy-efficient lighting fixtures for a broad range of commercial, institutional and residential applications. The company has showrooms in Manhattan, Dallas, Las Vegas and City of Industry, California. Q. I want some advice on a situation we are having in our son’s classroom. He is attending a private school where the student body is predominantly white with about 30% minority students. One of the teachers appears to be very prejudice and often picks on the African-American children while allowing the White children to engage in the same behaviors. She will also blame the minority children for behaviors that all of the children engaged in, however, only the minority children receive detention. We are very angry about this. How should we handle this situation? A. You have every right to be angry. Racism hurts and no one wants their child to be hurt. Racism in the classroom is not a new phenomenon. Many of us attended schools where the student body may have been mixed, however, the teachers were mostly white and favored the white students or the light-skinned black students. For years educators and civil rights activists have tackled the issues of racist comments to students, too many minority students being referred to special education, and a total lack of belief that minority children can achieve. In England in the 1940’s and 50’s, many Caribbean black students were being openly discriminated against and received poorer grades than their white counterparts. Activist there fought for years until that
problem was corrected. There are a number of studies that report how black boys were being ignored and berated in the classroom. Other studies report that girls were being stirred away from having an interest in science and math. An article by Diana Candia (2000), a columnist who writes for the Argonaut newspaper in Idaho, describes how Hispanic children were treated so badly in school that many of them dropped out. Children are not ignorant when it comes to racism. If you are never called upon when you raise your hand, are penalized for being late to class or talking, are not allowed to go to the bathroom, are not provided extra help when you need it, are treated in a condescending manner when you don’t understand something, and your white peers are given all of these privileges, you know you are being discriminated against. The latest government data, analyzed recently by Howard Witt in an article in the Chicago Tribune, shows that black students are getting a raw deal in American schools when it comes to discipline. In the average New Jersey public school, reports Witt, African-American students are almost 60 times as likely as white students to be expelled. Nationally, they are three times more likely than non-black students to be suspended or expelled for the same offenses. The problem has gotten worse, not better: In 1972, black students were suspended at just twice the rate of other students. And today’s numbers can’t be explained away by differences in class or income, since middle-class and wealthy black students are being punished more often—and more severely—than their nonblack peers. Problems of inequity based on race are not confined to discipline. Black students are far more likely than other students to be taught by inexperienced teachers, score lower on standardized tests, be referred for special education services, and fail to graduate. It’s a difficult subject to confront. But as the national population of students of color nears 40 percent while 80 percent of teachers are white, it’s an issue schools need to take on. There is no evidence or research that shows that Black children misbehave more than children of other races. However,
Communication Corner Take It or Leave It…Right Now By Gail Lewis Ever watch the game show Let’s Make A Deal? A costume clad audience member is faced with several prize options and must make an instant decision as to which to choose. Curtain #1? Maybe curtain #3? The prize choice must be made quickly; after all, it’s only a 30 minute show! Some salespeople ask for an instant decision from their customers. With a one-time customer, as with a retail sale, asking for a quick decision is expected. After all, in retail, the mall closes at 9, and customers must vacate the premises. But when building a long-term relationship with a customer, salespeople might want to rethink the quick sale approach. “Take it or leave it…right now” might make a potential long-term customer sprint away faster than the Road Runner. Build a relationship with a long-term customer by avoiding hard-sell, I-need-a-decision-right-now-ornothing pressure. Instead of demanding an instant decision, ask your customer for a time you can visit or call to get a decision. With a returning customer, take the time to build the
relationship. The return on your patience might just be a life-long client. ————Gail Lewis, M.A. teaches Communications; is a corporate trainer with The Communication Depot (www.TheCommunicationDepot.com); and never passes up an opportunity to watch Star Trek.
some teachers believe that to be true! Teacher attitude has a lot to do with how children are perceived. Black parents must refrain from telling their children to behave because White people are watching them. Who cares? They should behave because it’s right! Schools and districts need training in teacher attitudes, knowing their students’ reality and learning cross cultural identities. I am assuming that you have not observed this behavior yourself. Before you go to school angry and yell at the teacher, ask yourself if you may have made any prejudice remarks about ‘white teachers’ in general that your son may have overheard. Sometimes children will assume that a teacher must be prejudice because their parents talk about ‘the white teachers’ all the time when discussing the school. That aside, it is imperative that you request a meeting with the teacher and the principal immediately. If you know other parents who are experiencing the same problems, ask them to accompany you. You must state your concerns firmly and let the administration know that you will not tolerate this behavior one day longer. Remind them also that you do not expect to hear of any retaliation against your son for telling you what he has observed at school. The minority parents must also make a point of joining the PTA of their children’s school. Remember that not all white people are prejudice and the parents in the PTA may not even realize that this is going on. They can be a tremendous force in eliminating the racism. You can also ask the principal to provide sensitivity and multicultural training on one of their staff development days. You should also make a few surprise visits to the school. This lets the teacher know that you are a concerned parent and that you plan to monitor this situation. If after speaking to the principal and the teacher, the racist behavior continues, you may have to go to the school board of directors. Make every effort to allow the school to correct the problem, however, if they don’t, feel free to legally sue them for discrimination. Some information gathered from the www.Scholastic.com website! Trey Songz The “Texas Chainsaw 3D” Interview with Kam Williams Headline: Trey Makes the Move from CD to 3D Born in Petersburg, Virginia on November 28, 1984, Tremaine Aldon Neverson, AKA Trey Songz, has undeniably become one of music’s hottest R&B artists today thanks to an impressive streak of hit singles like “2 Reasons,” “Can’t Help But Wait,” “Successful” (featuring Drake), “I Invented Sex,” “Neighbors Know My Name,” the platinum-certified “Say Aah” and “Heart Attack,” which was recently nominated for a Grammy in the Best R&B Song category. Songz’ third album, Ready, made a stunning, Top 10 debut on the Billboard Top 200 charts and eventually landed a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. The pop icon’s fourth studio album, Passion, Pain, and Pleasure, was released in September of 2010 and debuted at #1 on the R&B/Hip Hop Chart, thanks to the success of two smash singles, “Bottoms Up” (featuring Nicki Minaj),” and “Can’t Be Friends,” both of which went platinum. His latest LP, Chapter V, debuted in 2012 at #1 on the Billboard 200. For this project, Trey tapped his younger brother, Alex, to produce “Don’t Be Scared,” and he also included such high-profile guests as T.I., Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Diddy and Meek Mill in the project. In 2011, Trey was part of Kodak’s “SO KODAK” campaign alongside Drake, Pitbull and Rihanna, and he served as the face of Rocawear’s Fall and Spring campaigns, too. His constant touring led him to Johannesburg, Africa where he not only performed a couple of sold-out concerts but spent time with local aspiring young musicians and entrepreneurs. Trey has used his gift of music as a launching pad for various philanthropic and entrepreneurial endeavors, like the “Angels with Heart Foundation” and the Trey’s Angels clothing line, sold exclusively at Citi Trends. Created in 2010, the “Angels with Heart Foundation” began as a call to action to engage his fan club, and it has now blossomed into a worldwide movement. Through this organization, Trey encourages members to give back to the community and, most importantly, to have a positive impact on their neighborhoods through service with local charities and random acts of kindness. Here, the versatile entertainer talks about his latest film, Texas Chainsaw 3D, where he co-stars as Ryan opposite Alexandra Daddario.
Kam Williams: Hi Trey, thanks for the interview. Trey: Hey, Kam, what’s up? KW: What interested you in Texas Chainsaw 3D? Trey: Oh, man, so many different things, like the opportunity to be a part of an iconic franchise. The original was one of the first horror films that actually petrified people. Also, for me, as a musician moving over into acting, it was important to have other denominators in the picture that could carry the weight. As a musician-turned-actor, you ordinarily face one of two scenarios. Either all the pressure of success or failure is on

your shoulders, so if the picture does poorly, you might never get another movie role, or you have a situation where you already have an anchor, which allows you to work your way up the ranks. I think Texas Chainsaw is such a big brand that it’s an anchor unto itself. In fact, I wasn’t #1 on the call sheet. That was Alexandra Daddario, who is an amazing actress. So, I didn’t have the burden of carrying the film, which afforded me a chance to learn a lot about acting while playing her boyfriend. KW: How would you describe your character, Ryan? Trey: As a likable character you get to know and love. He’s easy-going, laidback, and really likes his girl. He wants to be there to support her, when she learns that her parents weren’t her biological parents, and that she’s just inherited a house from a grandmother she never knew. KW: One of the most common, horror movie clichés is that the black dude dies first. But I guess it must be different in this case, since you’re playing the heroine’s love interest. Trey: Yeah, that was definitely a part of the negotiations. KW: Harriet Pakula-Teweles asks: How do you like making the move to acting from music? Trey: I’ve been in front of the camera a million times as a musician, and even directed a few music videos. So, I know a lot about spacing, focus, blocking, etcetera. So, acting isn’t totally new for me. Still, I find it fascinating, because you actually get to be another person. Even though Ryan wasn’t that complex an individual, I really enjoyed portraying someone else. KW: How do you divide your time between acting and music, given that you have a new album out, Chapter V? Trey: I’m very busy. Besides promoting the movie, I did several concerts before taking a break for Christmas, and I have another month on tour ahead of me. After enjoying the holidays in the country with the family in Virginia, I’m heading to Stockholm, Sweden on New Year’s Day. KW: Director Larry Greenberg says: Trey, I used a chainsaw to defend against zombies in my last film and it was difficult to get the splatter right. How did you guys handle that in Texas Chainsaw 3-D? Trey: The splatter? I don’t know how they did it, but when they did it, they did it right. I know that they used a real chainsaw when he cut through the door and throughout the whole film. I wasn’t scared, but I still thought to myself, “He does actually have a chainsaw in his hands!” So, if he wanted to cut through anything, he could. KW: Is there any question no one ever asks you, that you wish someone would? Trey: That’s a great question! Ironically enough, I can’t think of one right now. I do have some, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head. KW: When people do give me a good question. I call it their question and use it on other celebrities. Trey: Oh, that’s gangsta’! KW: I just got this one from Jamie Foxx: If you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do? Would you do the bad stuff, you never got a chance to do, or would you do good stuff to make sure you make it into heaven? Trey: If I only had 24 hours to live, I’d most likely spend it letting people know I loved
fected positively, no matter how many hit songs or movies you had. KW: Jamie’s co-star in Django Unchained, Kerry Washington, came up with: If you were an animal, what animal would you be? TS: [Chuckles] That’s a weird-ass question. I’d probably be a monkey. KW: The Tasha Smith question: Are you ever afraid? Trey: Afraid? I don’t know if afraid is the word. Sometimes, I’m unsure. KW: Columbus Short said nobody ever asks him if he’s happy. Are you happy? Trey: That’s a very good question. Nobody ever asks me that either. I believe I am happy. I don’t think I have achieved happiness in all areas of my life yet. As far as success is concerned, my family is being taken care of. But I think the last level of happiness would be becoming a father. KW: The Teri Emerson question: When was the last time you had a good laugh? Trey: I been laughing all day. You can’t stop me from having a good laugh. KW: What is your guiltiest pleasure? Trey: My guiltiest pleasure? The ID channel [Investigation Discovery]. I like watching real-life murder mysteries all day long. KW: The bookworm Troy Johnson question: What was the last book you read? Trey: I just started reading R. Jack Signorelli improve your ability to service your other debts.

Don’t rob Madison Avenue to pay Bay Street. A mixed geographic reference there. You can probably work smarter with your marketing investments, but if you cut back altogether because you have to pay your debts, you may as well close the doors. When businesses start slashing marketing programs, I know it won’t be long before the vultures start circling.
8.
Jack Signorelli
Managing Small Business Debt 1. It’s not all bad. To start with it is important for every business owner to understand that debt is a tool. You can use it to make things happen by buying new equipment or buying out a competitor. That said, you can’t use debt if lenders think you are already too far in over your head. That is a very tricky place to be because it leaves you with almost no maneuvering room (unless partners/investors are an option; see #2).
2.
Consider equity. While selling off a piece of your business dilutes ownership, it has the benefit of not eroding cash flow or restricting you from seeking other forms of financing. The loss of some degree of ownership (and sometimes management rights) must be weighed against the high cost of servicing debt.
3. Plan. The planning for taking on debt is simple: what is the impact of debt (principal and interest) servicing on your cash flow, net of possible revenue growth or cost control resulting from whatever asset you are using debt to acquire? To arrive at that net amount, use the most conservative figure possible. If you think that that new display case will increase sales by 5% – 20%, use 5% as your number. Also weigh the cost of debt against the lost opportunity cost of not making the acquisition/upgrade/etc. If the net difference between not acting and acting is not greater than your monthly debt servicing calculation, walk away. Never go into debt for something that only may help. The risk for any small business is too high.
Attack systematically. Don’t pay each debt off at the same rate. Attack your smallest debt (by principal) or the one with the highest rate of interest first. By doing that you will have the greatest positive impact on your cash flow in the shortest amount of time. When you have paid off the smallest debt, take the monthly amount you had committed to that, and add it to the amount you are paying on the next smallest (or highest interest) debt until that is paid off. That is called the snowballing approach to debt repayment.
9. Don’t turn your back. Review your financial statements each month and keep a close eye on the dollars, and the percentages and ratios. When your debt costs begin to grow as a percentage of your revenues, even by a fraction of a point, it may be an early warning sign that your debts are switching from a lever for growth to an anchor around your neck. Keep your enemies close. Great communication, and evidence that you are honoring your commitments, go a long way to helping you negotiate manageable debt servicing. Check in regularly with your creditors while things are still good but especially as soon as you realize there may be challenges. Relationships matter, even in this situation. Keep in mind that a creditor would rather keep you as a living customer than as a bad statistic. And when things do get tight, they would rather get back something than nothing at all. ————Jack works with a select group of clients who are driven to improve their profits, team performance, and lifestyle. 4.
Know your limit (and play within it). I use the slogan from various state and provincial lottery boards advisedly: few investments are entirely risk free. So even the best plan can go sour when unpredictable environmental factors have their way. Ensure that your budget has the headroom to allow you to make payments even if the debtleveraged improvements completely fail to pay for themselves.
5.
Sometimes it’s personal. Some of my clients are struggling not with business debt per se, but with personal debt. The issue here is how personal debt reduces flexibility to act in tough times. When the owner requires every possible penny of the business earnings to service a lifestyle and a related debt (divorce can be a real killer in this way), there is little flexibility to leave money in the company to fuel growth or an expensive-butpotentially-powerful marketing initiative. Get that personal debt under control.
6.
Consider all your payables. If we keep in mind that erosion of cash flow is the central challenge in managing debt, reviewing all of your payable accounts and suppliers makes sense. If you can negotiate better pricing or better terms (which can be worth more than a better price) from suppliers you can
