LOWES E-COMMERCE DISTRIBUTION CENTER COOPERTOWN, TN

The retail market is becoming more convenient for shoppers leading to an influx of online purchases. But we know those products don’t just fall from a cloud. The size of 22 footballs fields and centered on 110-acres of land, this high-tech distribution center proves that Henderson Engineers can tackle your e-commerce needs no matter how big the task. Working closely with our industry partners, we were able to bring dynamic distribution space to life, the first of its kind for Lowe’s. For this large-scale warehouse, our building systems were designed with the 600 employees who would be working in the space each day in mind. With more than 1,800 tons of HVAC covering more than one million square feet, the temperature and humidity controls keep the space at optimal levels for people, products, and packaging. Using more than 220 miles of electrical wiring, our electrical systems were designed to meet the increasing demand of e-commerce orders. Partnering with our wholly-owned subsidiary, Henderson Building Solutions, we made sure all systems were running at peak levels with best practice commissioning for all mechanical systems (including 45 roof top units), domestic water, lighting controls, and more.

CONFIDENTIAL CLIENT DISTRIBUTION CENTERS MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

A confidential international retailer with multiple first-mile, last-mile, and intermediate warehouse and distribution spaces needed building systems design services for their growing portfolio. With a variety of facilities, which included a combination of automated and traditional logistics as well as cold storage, the building systems design required to bring these spaces to life necessitated a little more engineering ingenuity than warehouses of the past. For the mechanical systems, we incorporated high-volume and low-speed air circulation fans for occupant comfort. Jet vent fan technology, which was originally developed for parking garage ventilation, was used in the plenum space above freezer boxes to mitigate condensation. Because of the size of these facilities, voltage drop can quickly become an issue, so our team also provided distribution design to help minimize construction costs and ensure critical equipment would function properly. We also outlined specifications for the distinctive electrical systems needed in cold storage, including lighting, power, and control systems to make certain they would be installed appropriately to withstand low temperatures and damp environments. Fire protection and suppression systems in cold storage distribution centers often involves complex design challenges; we implemented an innovative solution that allowed the client to apply their desired storage height and configuration while protecting the integrity of the sprinkler system. To mitigate the risk of corrosion, our design utilized nitrogen inerting instead of traditional compressed air for the dry pipe systems. We also provided low-voltage and telecommunications infrastructure design to support wireless LAN connectivity, hard-wired connectivity, automated equipment, video surveillance, access control, public address, and television distribution.

WALMART DISTRIBUTION CENTERS MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

Our decades-long tenure with Walmart has helped define who we are as a firm. A Walmart engineering expert for new, remodel, and prototype designs, Henderson Engineers has completed thousands of projects worldwide. One of the largest retailers in the world, Walmart depends on an extensive supply chain network to safely and effectively keep shelves stocked and customers’ orders filled. Regardless of whether the merchandise is new socks, fresh oranges, or even a thick-cut steak, we understand that each step along the way is critical in keeping that supply chain moving. Year after year, we strive to improve these ongoing programs by analyzing our internal processes, to provide a better engineered product with higher efficiencies and smarter solutions to the Walmart family. Over the last decade, our refrigeration group has successfully completed more than 2,000 projects and continues to provide ongoing refrigeration design and research for pilot fulfillment facilities evaluating various proprietary strategies. From producing a comprehensive report of building systems within all pilot distribution centers, to a nationwide refresh of the entire fleet, to immediate systems upgrades from location to location, Henderson has shown unwavering support to align with Walmart’s visions and goals.

Always looking for ways to bring innovation to the shopping experience, Walmart collaborated with technology leaders to bring to life their firstof-its-kind automated fulfillment system. This new technology assists in filling online orders faster and more efficiently than ever before, saving valuable time for customers and associates. For these unique, state-of-the-art facilities, Henderson Engineers outfitted automated online grocery pickup warehouses with innovative building systems designs. Connected to an existing store, these facilities are unique to the retail market sector. Henderson’s designs create a safe and comfortable environment for the automated robot system and store associates alike. The building systems also provide cold-chain integrity for refrigerated and frozen merchandise. With safety at the forefront of our designs, the fire protection system in these spaces had to be almost as innovative as the automated robots. To protect these facilities, Henderson's fire protection experts combined aspirating smoke detection to detect fires practically before they start and ceiling-only warehouse sprinkler protection. We also coordinated the rack design with other technology leaders to reduce both installation and long-term maintenance costs by eliminating in-rack sprinklers. This change improved Walmart's return on investment as well by allowing more products to be stored in the racks. Allowing store associates to focus more on customer service, our interfacing systems help save time and money by supporting this groundbreaking approach to online grocery pickup.

OFFICE DEPOT DISTRIBUTION WAREHOUSE NEWVILLE, PA

Office Depot is focused on quickly delivering customers the supplies they need to be successful. To do this, they made supply chain improvements and streamlined operations by consolidating their existing distribution centers into 20 convenient locations across the US. This LEED Gold certified project was a consolidation of three existing distribution centers into a single new distribution center. As experts in warehouse and large scale designs, Henderson Engineers provided building systems provisions for automated inventory controls and more productive distribution. This includes systems to support motorized sorting conveyors, robotic inventory sorting, and robotic forklift battery chargers. The warehouse also includes 20,000 SF of office and support spaces for the several hundred people who work in this facility. Always keeping a safe and stable production environment in mind, we outfitted this distribution center with reliable standby power systems to maintain approximately 70 percent of operation during unexpected outages. Efficient lighting controls were designed utilizing high-bay occupancy sensors to help save energy and keep costs low.

TVH Parts Co. is a worldwide provider of replacement parts and accessories for material handling, industrial, and agricultural machinery. To accommodate their growing staff and operations, their North American Headquarters underwent an office expansion and warehouse addition focused on collaboration and flexibility. Design highlights include a two-story atrium, in-house daycare and cafÊ, and more meeting areas. With the atrium’s stadium seating, the steps also become a gathering place and a location to host large group presentations. The TVH East Warehouse addition increased capacity through utilitarian pallet storage and helped TVH Parts to continually meet their customers' needs. Henderson Engineers performed existing site observations in order to determine the best way to feed the addition from the existing, on-site utilities. This was an unconditioned warehouse addition with gas unit heaters for freeze protection of the new sprinkler risers serving the high-piled storage racks. This addition also included the use of siphonic interior roof drains, which run flat within the warehouse, to minimize obstruction to the clear height of the space. The primary roof drains were tied in underground to the new site storm lines, while the secondary roof drains daylighted to grade outside of the addition.
