AVIATION: DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR INFECTION CONTROL. HE N D E R S ON IN SIG HTS | COVID-19 SERI ES
The aviation industry has no doubt been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic but flying won’t be any less necessary as stay-at-home orders across the country ease. One of the most important tasks we can do as building systems engineers to support this essential industry is ease the fears of passengers by developing design strategies for infection control and social distancing.

BIOAEROSOL TRANSMISSION
SURFACE CONTACT TRANSMISSION
▪ Health screening at entry points
▪ Increase surface cleaning
▪ UV lights in air handlers
▪ Robots with UV lights mounted on them for sanitation
▪ Maintain 50% humidity ▪ Implement airflow strategies that assist in removing contaminants from breathing zone - Zone airflow separation/pressurization - Fewer zones per air handler ▪ Expand “occupied” operation to increase ventilation ▪ Advanced Filtration Products — used by many airports already for exhaust fume control - HEPA filtration at select areas - Bipolar Ionization
▪ Antimicrobial baggage bins ▪ UVc lights in baggage system ▪ UVc lights in restroom stalls and food service areas ▪ Touchless doors/plumbing fixtures ▪ Replace cloth seats/flooring CON TI N U ED

▪ Ticketing - Airline apps for boarding passes
- Wait time monitoring displays
- Self-tagging baggage
- All gender design including more stalls
- Multiple locations for baggage drop-off - Indoor positioning indicators ▪ Security
▪ Holdrooms/boarding - Holdroom separation — will need more seating in other locations - Call to gate/just in time boarding
- Biometric access controls
- Common use systems to use all gates
- Lane speed monitoring - Advanced scanners with more thru-put/centralized review - Expansion of TSA PreCheck , Global Entry, and CLEAR Pass TM
