Creation Rediscovered Finding New Meaning in an Ancient Story Jeffery M. Leonard
Creation Rediscovered, by Jeffery M. Leonard, guides readers through a contextual reading of the Bible’s creation stories. Over the last two centuries, few subjects have generated as much controversy for Christians as has creation. The whethers, whens, and hows of creation have often become a battlefield in which the pitched forces of competing sides—Darwinists and creationists, young-earthers and old, figurativists and literalists— have struggled for the upper hand. Like most battles, this fight has tended to inflict a fair amount of collateral damage along the way. This is especially true for those put in the terrible position of feeling they have had to choose between the Bible they have fallen in love with and the science they have studied.

In this book, Jeffery Leonard writes to fellow travelers in the faith who want to take the biblical text seriously, while at the same time appreciate science’s exploration of what we consider to be God’s creation. It is his contention that setting the Bible’s creation texts back within their ancient context allows us to do both of these things. Indeed, Leonard believes that when we reread what the Bible has to say about creation in its original setting, we find meaning in the text far more profound than what we have previously imagined. Key points and features: • Written by a Bible scholar • Unique, timely, and fresh interpretation • Helps readers see the Bible’s creation stories as vessels of healing and hope in God’s larger plan for humanity • Attempts to redirect Christians to read the ancient creation stories within the context in which they were written Target audience: Students (college, seminary, graduate school); pastors; parents whose children have questions about the Christian faith because of perceived challenges science raises about the Bible.

Intentional Preaching A View from the Pew Meirwyn Walters
Intentional Preaching, written by Meirwyn Walters, is the handy guide that every preacher needs. In preparing and delivering their sermons, preachers make dozens of decisions, some intentionally, many perhaps less so. Why not make thoughtful decisions for everything that goes into preaching a good sermon? From first words to hand gestures, choosing a text, masterful use of exegesis, captivating illustrations, titles, approaches to reading Scripture, use of voice, PowerPoint, applications that stick, and scores of other aspects of sermon preparation and delivery, this book explores the panoply of elements in good preaching. Targeted at preachers, the book consists of 117 “squiblets” ranging from a sentence to three or four pages, each on a particular aspect of preaching. Some are quite short, offering practical wisdom, some provide specific advice and tools, and some contain vignettes from the field. In this delightful and sage book, there is something for every preacher to improve his or her preaching.

“Although pastors may have talked among themselves about how to construct effective sermons, they have seldom brought the listeners into the conversation. . . . They need a word like this from a layman, a lawyer, and a committed follower of Jesus who really is a friend of preachers.” —Haddon Robinson Key points and features: • Explores the panoply of elements in good preaching, from hand gestures, to use of voice, to captivating illustrations, and more • Easily readable (and incredibly humorous) short chapters for busy pastors • A handy guidebook in a small trim size, packed with snippets of sage advice Target audience: Ministers; seminary and Bible college students; parachurch leaders; seminary professors of homiletics; lay people who wish to encourage their pastors.

Jesus and the Manuscripts What We Can Learn from the Oldest Texts Craig A. Evans Foreword by J. K. Elliott

Jesus and the Manuscripts, by popular author and Bible scholar Craig A. Evans, introduces readers to the diversity and complexity of the ancient literature that records the words and deeds of Jesus. This diverse literature includes the familiar Gospels of the New Testament, the much less familiar literature of the Rabbis and of the Qur’ān, and the extracanonical narratives and brief snippets of material found in fragments and inscriptions. This book critically analyzes important texts and quotations in their original languages and engages the current scholarly discussion. Evans argues that the Gospel of Thomas is not early or independent of the New Testament Gospels but that it should be dated to the late second century. He also argues that Secret Mark, like the recently published Gospel of Jesus’ Wife, is probably a modern forgery. Of special interest is the question of how long the autographs of New Testament writings remained in circulation. Evans argues that the evidence suggests that most of these autographs remained available for copying and study for more than one hundred years and thus stabilized the text. Key points and features: • Written by popular author and Bible scholar Craig A. Evans • Includes 20+ pages of high-quality color photos • Walks readers through the various works of ancient literature, both biblical and non-biblical, that mention Jesus • Critically analyzes important texts and quotations in their original languages and engages the current scholarly discussion Target audience: Academics (especially New Testament scholars), as well as some educated pastors and laypeople.

Studying the New Testament through Inscriptions An Introduction D. Clint Burnett
Studying the New Testament through Inscriptions is an intuitive introduction to inscriptions from the Greco-Roman world. Inscriptions can help contextualize certain events associated with the New Testament in a way that many widely circulated literary texts do not. This book both introduces inscriptions and demonstrates sound methodological use of them in the study of the New Testament. Through five case studies, it highlights the largely unrecognized ability of inscriptions to shed light on early Christian history, practice, and the leadership structure of early Christian churches, as well as to solve certain New Testament exegetical impasses.

The ServiceMaster Story Navigating Tension between People and Profit Albert M. Erisman
The ServiceMaster Story, written by faith and business expert Albert M. Erisman, examines how the first five leaders of ServiceMaster (a cleaning and restoration service company) managed to develop and give deeper purpose to their employees, while also growing into a financially successful organization. From 1929 to 2001, ServiceMaster grew from a few people making their living in Chicago to a publicly traded company with revenues of $6 billion, in forty countries—with five different leaders. Each leader built on the work of the previous leader, focusing on helping workers to develop as people. Their number one goal was “to honor God in all we do.” ServiceMaster was considered by employees at all levels as a great place to work and was selected by Fortune magazine as the most admired service company in the world, both in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Golden Alphabet An Exposition of Psalm 119 Charles Haddon Spurgeon
The Golden Alphabet is Charles Spurgeon’s exposition on Psalm 119, published originally in The Treasury of David. Upon noting that the seven-volume treasury was too large for individuals to purchase, he decided to publish smaller sections that are easier to read. “[Psalm 119], from its great length, helps us to wonder at the immensity of Scripture. From its keeping to the same subject it helps us to adore the unity of Scripture, for it is but one. Yet, from the many turns it gives to its one thought, it helps us to see the variety of Scripture. How manifold are the words and thoughts of God in his Word! Just as in creation, the wonders of his skill are displayed in many ways.” —Spurgeon

Ruth and Naomi Thank God
What you need:

• scissors
Give thanks to him. ~Psalm 100:4
Thank You, Thank You!
Helping Ruth • two baskets
(based on Ruth 2:8-17)
Ruth and Naomi were moving. They were moving from Moab to Bethlehem. “Ruth, my dear daughterin-law, you do not need to move with me,” said Naomi. “You have lived in Moab all your life.” “Naomi,” said Ruth, “I am moving with you. When I married your son I learned to love the same God you serve. Now my husband is dead, but I love you and I want to move with you back to Bethlehem.” The two women traveled on, finally reaching the town that sat up on a hill. What excitement there was in the little town when the people saw Naomi. “Naomi! We’re so glad to see you,” said one. “Naomi, it’s good to see you back home where you belong,” another told her. Naomi was so glad to be back in Bethlehem. But there was the responsibility of finding food for the two of them. “Naomi, don’t you worry about our food,” Ruth told her. “It’s the time of barley harvest. You have told me the Israelites always leave some grain standing for the poor. I’ll go to the fields tomorrow and gather the barley that is left.” Boaz owned the fields where Ruth went to pick the barley. He had heard how kind she had been to travel all the distance with Naomi and take care of her. “Come and eat our food for lunch,” said Boaz. “You will be safe here and you may gather all the barley you need.” Ruth’s heart was happy because of Boaz’s kindness. “Thank you, thank you,” she told him. That night, when Ruth told Naomi what Boaz had said, Naomi said, “Ruth, let us thank God for taking care of us.” Together the two women thanked God for being so good to them. “Thank you, God, thank you,” Ruth said again.
Discussion questions:
• empty box
What to do: 1. Duplicate this page and cut out the food cards. You will need two sets of cards. 2. Divide the children into two teams, lining the teams in single file position. 3. Choose one child from each team to be Ruth. Ruth should sit on the ground ten feet away from the line with a basket in her lap. 4. Place the food cards in a box between the two teams. 5. At the go signal, the first in line should grab a food card, run to Ruth and say, “I am thankful for [name of food on card],” drop the card in the basket and run back to tag the hand of the next person in line. Continue until one team finishes with all their cards. 6. The first team to finish wins the game.
1. What has God done for you that you are thankful for? 2. How can we show our thanks?
