A Better Practitioner, The Best Practitioner
legislation that underpins childcare and education practice and of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
“Are you a Nursery Assisstant working towards a qualification or a fully qualified Level 2/3 practitioner?
This course will equip you with just enough for you to make an informed decision regarding working in the childcare and education sector and the resources to get you started!
Have you thought about your responsibilities, could you do with help managing these? Do you want to share experiences with colleagues not working at your nursery? Do you want to be the best you can be, going over and above what your line manager expects of you? Do you struggle to identify what your purpose is even though you do it, day in, day out. This course is just what you need. It doesn’t matter what experiences you’ve had in the sector so far, how long you’ve been in the sector or what age group you work with (0–5) – if you strive to be the best but don’t feel like you have the time to develop professionally because of your daytime responsibilities, come and see what this course can do for you! Fundamentally this course is about motivating you, building your confidence, coaching and mentoring you in the areas you think you need to develop in and it’s about being open enough to accept guidance to build on the areas you hadn’t already thought of! We’ll explore our attitudes to work in the sector, what we enjoy, what we don’t enjoy, how much of an impact we want to make and how we can do this. We’ll look at the challenges we’re faced with and how we can overcome these – changing our outlook entirely. The course will also look at how we practice with children, with colleagues and how we support families. What are the important things we’re missing out on? How can we compliment what is already happening or how can we improve it? How can we enhance our own experiences in our work every day?
You could be new to the childcare and education sector, beginning to think about a career in early years, you could be a nursery or teaching assistant not yet doing any formal early years qualification. You could be well established in another sector, looking for a change. It doesn’t really matter. Everyone is welcome. No prior qualifications are necessary and all you’ll need to bring with you is a notebook and pen, a keen attitude to learn and a willingness to participate/contribute to the group …
Early Years in Business Are you a new Manager? Have you acquired a business or established a new one? Are you thinking about management or starting your own business? This course will give you comprehensive information, support, guidance and equip you with the knowledge you’ll need in order to take your next steps. You can expect to explore and practice the following topics, fundamental to your success: Business Development – How your business looks, where you want it to be and what you need to do to get there. Quality – The history of the business, your aspirations, visions and goals. Establishing a successful enterprise – new or acquired business, creating a significant impact on the community, feasibility studies, financial forecasts and business plans. Marketing – Competitor analysis, unique selling points, business status in the community, how to ‘sell’ and sales techniques and marketing plans.
Join to find out!”
Creating a Winning Team – recruitment and training, sharing your vision, delegating responsibilities.
Early Years: An Introduction
Purpose – Staying in touch with your passion to succeed, making tough decisions for the good of the business. It doesn’t matter what background you come from, the business building principles are the same.
Childcare and education is changing. It’s not what you might think it is, it’s better! Are you interested in working with children? Do you want to know more before applying for a job in the early years sector or before applying for a full time education course? More importantly, do you want to become part of a network of better practitioners….before you’ve even started? We’ll explore how babies and children develop and learn and what opportunities there are to work in early years you are not limited to working in nurseries! We’ll explore the different qualifications available in childcare, what happens if you want to work with children over 5 and how you can get involved now, building up valuable knowledge and experience. You’ll have a taste of the

GCSE Maths ■ ▲ ★
Law AS/A2
The course covers the National Curriculum in Mathematics, including sections on number, handling data, shape and space and algebra. It leads to a GCSE at Foundation Level.
The AS Level in Law involves the study of the English Legal System. You will take two modules; The English Legal System and Sources of Law. The course will familiarise you with the organisation of the courts and the role of judges, magistrates, solicitors and barristers. You will gain a knowledge and understanding of topics such as the penal system and the particular considerations involved in sentencing young and adult offenders. In addition, you will explore the extent of police powers and the pros and cons of our jury system. Analysis and evaluation of the current law is essential and you will develop the necessary skills in order to allow you to do this.
The cost of textbooks and exam fees are not included in the course fee.
Sociology AS/A2 Sociology is a fascinating subject which explores the relationships between society’s social institutions and social processes and the individual. The course is designed to introduce students to the different ways that sociologists think about the social world and the research strategies that they have developed in order to investigate social issues and social problems. Students will be shown how to apply this knowledge to a number of selected sociological topics. These will include culture and identity, the family, poverty, education and health at AS level, and crime and deviance, mass media and power and politics for A2. They will also look at core themes such as socialisation, social class and stratification and power. The students will be assessed by 4 examinations. There are no special requirements to study on this course, enthusiasm and a willingness to study independently and are more important.
Psychology AS/A2 This course will introduce students to the major areas of study such as Cognitive, Behavioural, Development, Biological, Social and Abnormal Psychology. Within these areas of study students will have the opportunity to explore areas related to stress, eating behaviours, aggression, child development, social influence, depression and schizophrenia. This course includes lectures and formal and informal discussions. Students have the opportunity to take the AS/A2 exams if they wish.
The A2 Level involves an in-depth study of Criminal Law. The two modules require a study of crimes such as murder, manslaughter, assault, battery, actual and grievous bodily harm, theft, burglary and defences such as insanity, diminished responsibility, provocation and intoxication. You will study many cases, developing a critical awareness of the present state of the Criminal Law and learning how to analyse and solve problems by applying legal rules. The specifications provide an excellent foundation for the study of Law or related courses in Higher Education. No prior knowledge of the subject is required, although it is recommended that students have good communication skills, together with a good memory for detail. There is, however, an emphasis on formal essay writing and this should be taken into account when making your application.
English Language & Literature AS/A2 You will gain a two-fold benefit from this course which offers an integrated approach to the study of language and literature. Three units will be covered for AS (spoken word, desk study, shorter fiction study for coursework or exam) and another three for A2 (writing for different audiences and purposes for coursework or examination, wider reading, genre studies – the synoptic paper). You will be able to develop your personal writing skills by adapting material for a variety of contexts as well as experimenting in original writing and examining spoken language in use.

Creative Writing Introduction to Writing Fiction This course is designed for new and aspiring writers seeking inspiration and guidance on getting started. The course will provide writing exercises and advice on techniques and look at the different elements involved in creating fiction, from character to plot, description and voice. Providing gentle feedback it will give budding writers the chance to explore their ideas and build the confidence to find their own creative voice.

Designed to help overcome anxieties and encourage imagination, writers will focus on plotting, point of view, developing character, imagery, dialogue, pace, place and setting, names and narrative. By thoroughly dissecting their own work it will help writers to understand how fiction works and how to create it. The emphasis will be on generating new work, or improving existing work, so that by the end of the course writers should have either the beginnings of a novel or completed short story. Most importantly writers will have found their own voice, their confidence and be armed with a valuable set of creative writing skills. Writers should be committed to writing both inside and outside the class each week to advance their projects and bring new work to share.

Music Beginning Music Theory Are you interested in learning to read music? Do you get confused with all the dots on the page? Does it come across as a foreign language to you and you would like a better understanding? This course will look at: • Treble and Bass Clef • Time signatures • Key signatures • Note lengths • Major scales • Intervals • Common symbols (i.e. performance markings) If you are a beginner musician or just taken up an instrument and want to master grade 1 theory then this course will help you achieve it. Writing equipment is essential and manuscript paper will be provided.
Early Years Music Are you a practitioner in the Early Years sector and want to develop your knowledge and experience in music? Are you a Child Minder who wants to engage more in musical activities? Or a parent who wants to find ways of encouraging music in your home but does not know where to start? This course will provide you with practical tips, lesson plan opportunities and a greater understanding of implementing music in a multitude of settings. Each session will provide a different focus and will look at music from birth to age 5, sessions will include: • Introduction to music • General sounds • Making your own instruments • Planning and achieving progression • Musical activities • Supporting individual needs This course will offer techniques, guidance and confidence to support children with their development outlined by the EYFS, and to provide you with the opportunities for an open forum to help develop your own understanding. You will need to bring writing equipment to take notes. No experience is necessary but a willingness to be hands on, come with a give it a go attitude and to be open minded about music.
Guitar and Bass Refresher/Improver This is intended to be a fun course suitable for anyone with an interest in music who wants to improve their ability to play guitar by ear and using simple chord chards that can be written and read easily. You will need to bring your own guitar and small amp (if required). Basics that will help you to improvise solos in Major and Minor keys. Lessons can be based around your favourite tracks or pieces that you already know or would like to know. We will work towards a performance of 3 songs per group (your choice) at the end of the course accompanied by Drums, Bass and Keyboards backing track. Final presentation of the performance will be offered to fellow students and limited number of invitees in week 13. You will best be able to form Major and Minor chords in at least 1 position in order to participate, however, this needs to be no more than 3 Majors and 3 Minors i.e. A, D, E Major; Am, Dm, Em. Don’t worry about present ability as this will be taken into account and lessons/exercises/groups will be tailored to suit you and your allocated group. If a singer is needed for your final performance you can choose to do that yourself or the song can be performed as an instrumental. Course
