Apprenticeships The courses below are available as an apprenticeship. Funded by the government through the Skills Funding Agency (SFA), apprenticeships are a work-based training programme designed around the needs of both the employer and learner. The Henley College is contracted by the SFA to provide apprenticeship training to people aged 16+. Most programmes take 1–2 years to complete and apprentices will gain a nationally recognised qualification in their chosen vocational area. We offer a range of flexible delivery methods to meet the needs of both the employer and the learner. These consist of on-the-job training, college-based training and work-based supported learning. You may wish to complete all of your qualification through work-based supported learning, or use a combination of delivery methods. Whichever you choose, an assessor will support your progress and development through workplace visits. Training is not tied to the academic year; the programme can start at any time.

Students will be shown how to apply this knowledge to a number of selected sociological topics. These will include culture and identity, the family, poverty, education and health at AS Level, and crime and deviance, mass media and power and politics for A2. They will also look at core themes such as socialisation, social class and stratification and power. The students will be assessed by four examinations. There are no special requirements to study on this course; enthusiasm and a willingness to study independently are more important.

Psychology AS/A2 This course will introduce students to the major areas of study such as cognitive, behavioural, development, biological, social and abnormal psychology. Within these areas of study students will have the opportunity to explore topics related to stress, eating behaviours, aggression, child development, social influence, depression and schizophrenia. This course includes lectures and formal and informal discussions. Students have the opportunity to take the AS/A2 exams if they wish.

The A2 Level involves an in-depth study of Criminal Law. The two modules require a study of crimes such as murder, manslaughter, assault, battery, actual and grievous bodily harm, theft, burglary and defences such as insanity, diminished responsibility, provocation and intoxication. You will study many cases, developing a critical awareness of the present state of Criminal Law and learning how to analyse and solve problems by applying legal rules. The specifications provide an excellent foundation for the study of Law or related courses in Higher Education. No prior knowledge of the subject is required, although it is recommended that students have good communication skills, together with a good memory for detail. There is, however, an emphasis on formal essay writing and this should be taken into account when making your application.

English Language & Literature AS/A2 You will gain a two-fold benefit from this course which offers an integrated approach to the study of language and literature. Three units will be covered for AS (spoken word, desk study, shorter fiction study for coursework or exam) and another three for A2 (writing for different audiences and purposes for coursework or examination, wider reading, genre studies – the synoptic paper). You will be able to develop your personal writing skills by adapting material for a variety of contexts as well as experimenting in original writing and examining spoken language in use.

Through the study of two set literature texts for AS and another two for A2 you will extend your critical awareness and refine your skills of close textual analysis. The cost of textbooks and exam fees are not included in the course fee. Students will need to purchase three set texts, approximate cost £45.

Clothing Alterations for Beginners, Upcycling and Recycling Workshop This is a great workshop for those who wish to learn how to make alterations to garments and how to upcycle and recycle pre-loved items. RYA – Royal Yachting Association Shore-Based Qualifications RYA Day Skipper

RYA Yachtmaster

This course aims to provide shore-based instruction on basic seamanship and navigation for the RYA syllabus over a 20 week period. It is primarily for those involved in small craft handling in tidal waters, but sea anglers, divers and those who wish to know how to navigate through basic and electronic chart work will benefit from the course. Previous practical experience is useful, but not essential. During the course students will complete a number of navigational exercises and other papers. Topics will include basic and electronic navigation, pilotage, weather, tides, collision regulations, rope work and safety.

This course aims to help you improve navigational competence and safety at sea, up to the level of the RYA syllabus for the shore-based course for Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore. It is for students who have already completed the Day Skipper course, or who have a background of offshore cruising and/or racing experience. This course is complete and is not intended for beginners or those with no knowledge of the principles of small boat navigation.

By the end of the course students will have covered the whole of the RYA Day Skipper syllabus. The details for this course are set out in the RYA booklet G15/98 (sail) and G18/08 (power), copies of which can be obtained through the tutor or the RYA. During the course students will sit two assessment papers. On successful completion the RYA/DoT Day Skipper shore-based certificate will be awarded. This will provide entry to the more advanced Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shored-based course. Please bring to the first lesson a notepad, 2B pencil, rubber and a straightedge. The costs of the examination and certificate, exercise papers, navigation CD and RYA booklet, are included in the fee. Technical materials will be required at an additional cost of approximately £25. These may be ordered through the instructor. Further details will be given at the first session.

During the course you will sit three assessment papers on chart work, collision regulations and weather. Other topics covered in the course will include basic and electronic navigation, pilotage, weather, tides, collision regulations, stability and safety. The details for this course are set out in the RYA booklet G15/98 (sail) and G18/98 (power), copies of which can be obtained through the tutor or the RYA. On successful completion of the examinations, the RYA/ DoT Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shore-based certificate will be awarded. For the first lesson please bring a notepad, 2B pencil, rubber and a straightedge. Students who have completed the Day Skipper Course will already own chart work instruments, training almanac and possibly a copy of the International Collision Regulations. These should also be brought to the first lesson. Those who have not attended such a course should come to the first session prepared to buy the instruments for approximately £25. We advise you not to purchase any additional equipment or materials until after the

first night of the course. Yachtmaster exercise papers, almanac, chard CD and RYA booklet are all included in the course fee. This fee will also cover examination entry and certificate.

Essential Navigation and Seamanship The Essential Navigation and Seamanship course is a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness. It is aimed at new or inexperienced skippers and crew, or those wanting to refresh their skills. If you are interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving then this is the right course for you. Topics include: charts and publications, safety, engine checks, buoyage, tidal awareness, visual and electronic navigation, pilotage, rules of the road, anchoring, weather forecast and passage planning.

RYA VHF Short Range Radio The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) radio equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures of operation. The equipment at The Henley College has been modified in order that each radio may be used in the classroom linked to the other radios. The use of live radios in the classroom enables the student to have hands-on experience of the procedures

44

when communicating with other VHF users. There are no pre-requisites for the course, although you should bring with you to the first evening a knowledge of the phonetic alphabet and a recent colour passport-sized photograph. The course will run over four evenings with an additional evening for a short SRC examination. There will be an additional cost of £60 payable to the RYA for the licence and examination. Course
