By concentrating on solutions to water and sanitation, education, nutrition, health, and shelter, sessions will examine how best to foster development in these areas.

Harnessing Policy: These sessions aim to build a bridge between the actual needs of individuals, aid agencies, aid donors and the global community and the policy that is designed to protect and empower them.

Responding to global flux: We are addressing situations that are disastrous by definition, so while we can focus on best practice, standards and ideals, we must also look at current global situations and respond appropriately.

The Interactive Zone presents solutions for each of the Phases of Emergency Management – practical tools to improve aid and development practices and effective delivery. Join these sessions to interact with innovative products and gain first-hand experience of how these work in the field. The Training Zone will focus on transporting equipment and providing relief safely – logistics, procurement and security of aid workers. These are designed to involve the audience, so please do lend your experience and expertise!

The purpose of AIDF is to build partnerships for relief and development and the AIDF team are here to provide information and to facilitate connections.

How do we create a template for harmonized ICT solutions?

What are the major challenges involved?

Creating a common communications culture between stakeholders in a disaster response situation creates trust and sets a foundation for collaboration and information sharing without undermining either the neutrality of civilian international organizations, inter-governmental organizations, and NGOs and negates the need for the military to safeguard operational security information.

Many stakeholders agree that the creation of a collaborative information environment can be achieved if multiple stakeholder groups are sensitive to one another’s concerns.

Resources can be more closely coordinated not only for preparedness and first-responder efforts, but also for mid and long-term reconstruction. These options increasingly include “leave-behind” infrastructure for local private, governmental, or non-governmental agencies.

Such infrastructure can be used to jump-start host-nation ICT infrastructure recovery and reconstruction and can provide commercial opportunities to seed economic revitalization through ICT infrastructure development.

David Hartshorn will welcome delegates to participate in this open forum discussion and to identify the means with which closer collaboration amongst key stakeholder groups can be achieved.

Prior to working at DigitalGlobe, Steve worked with the CIA as a Senior Imagery Advisor for fourteen years.

Samuel A. Worthington President & CEO, InterAction Session: Global Partnership for Development Since 2006, Samuel has served as the President and CEO of InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S. based international NGOs. From 1994-2006, he was President and CEO of Plan International USA. Samuel has a Masters degree with distinction from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Dr. Catherine Woteki Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics, and Chief Scientist, US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Session: Nutrition Prior to joining USDA, Dr. Woteki served as Global Director of Scientific Affairs for Mars Incorporated, managing the company’s research on health, nutrition, and food safety. Before this, she was Dean of Agriculture and Professor of Human Nutrition at Iowa State University. She was the first Under Secretary for Food Safety at USDA.

Mona Yacoubian Senior Advisor, Middle East and Project Director, Pathways to Progress, The Stimson Center Session: The Arab Spring Mona directs Pathways to Progress, an initiative exploring the dynamics of the Arab revolts and seeking policy solutions to ensure peace and prosperity.

Mona also co-directs the Stimson-US Institute of Peace Lebanon Working Group. Previously, she served as a Special Advisor and Senior Program Officer on the Middle East at the U.S. Institute of Peace.
