This is the first time we have held two events in one year. The launch of AIDF Asia Pacific in Bangkok this January was a great success with over 1,000 participants from around the world and we look forward to continuing our work there. Oliver Lacey-Hall, Head, UN Regional Office for Asia and Pacific, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), spoke of the need for public private partnerships; “My own desire is that we don’t see this conference as simply another annual event, but rather as the beginning of a potential process by which we are able to broaden and deepen the somewhat hesitant dialogue between aid workers and organizations and our colleagues working in the private sector”. This theme of public private partnerships has always been at the core of AIDF’s purpose and this, the flagship event in Washington DC will continue to facilitate open dialogue between the public, private and intergovernmental sectors. There are changes and developments afoot in the delivery of both aid and development and it is essential that we are aware of them if we are to increase effectiveness across the sector. USAID, among other donor agencies is looking to change the way aid is funded, delivered and managed. The session “USAID: a new outlook” will explain this in more details. Over the course of the next two days, we will also be looking at goals and targets beyond the MDGs alongside the centrality of female empowerment and gender parity. Further discussions look at ways to transcend dependency in communities following a disaster by focusing overseas development assistance on empowerment, job creation and more productive purchasing. The agenda features sessions presented by UN World Food Programme and Internews.
