AURORA - NEW ODENSE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL & FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES AURORA IS THE NAME OF THE NEW UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN ODENSE, SITUATED AS AN ICONIC BUILDING COMPLEX IN THE GREEN LANDSCAPE AND PROVIDING THE FRAMEWORK FOR HEALTH, LIFE AND GROWTH OF BENEFIT TO THE ENTIRE REGION OF SOUTHERN DENMARK.
AURORA IS THE GODDESS OF DAWN IN ROMAN MYTHOLOGY. SHE RENEWS HERSELF EVERY MORNING AT DAWN AND FLIES ACROSS THE SKY, ANNOUNCING THE ARRIVAL OF TOMORROW AND THUS RENEWED FAITH, HOPE AND LIFE.”
AURORA – THE FRAMEWORK FOR HEALTH
AURORA – THE FRAMEWORK FOR LIFE
AURORA – THE FRAMEWORK FOR GROWTH
As the goddess Aurora, the New Odense University Hospital (New OUH) announces the arrival of tomorrow with an innovative building of high architectural quality, designed to meet the requirements and challenges of tomorrow. As Aurora, the new hospital finds renewed life force in the transition and meeting between new and old, the known and unknown, tradition and renewal. The building pays tribute to the connection between New OUH and the Faculty of Health Sciences (SUND), between research and practice, between the hospital sector and society. We build on the knowledge available on hospital design today and the knowledge we will acquire tomorrow. The new hospital pays tribute to the synergy created in the meeting between patients and employees, landscape and architecture as well as the hospital, region and international research environment.
Aurora puts the individual and life in focus in the healthcare sector of the future. In all its simplicity, it is designed as a circular building complex, inviting the users into a holistic and impeccable universe. The individual is in focus in the circular city structure - which is reflected in the architecture, everyday routines, treatment processes, work procedures and research environments. The ground plan of Aurora meets the requirements for a highly efficient, flexible and future-proof hospital complex and at the same time meets the employees, patients and other users where they are and with a high degree of respect. Aurora offers an organic, accessible and well-arranged building in integration with a cost effective hospital where knowledge, health and life are united.
New OUH is built around a clear infrastructure and rational logistics, reducing the walking distances for all users and thus providing more time for the patients. The building design is based on simple, cost effective principles, strenghtening the overall hospital economy and providing the opportunity for local craftsmen to work on the project - of benefit to the growth of both the local community and the region. The iconic hospital design connecting the hospital and university by means of international, state-of-the art architecture makes it visible to users and stakeholders - at regional, national and international level - that a new landmark for the healthcare sector of the future has landed in the Region of Southern Denmark. This inspires pride and respect across the region and forms a unique basis for new potentials and collaboration opportunities across sectors, industries and knowledge fields.

THE HUMAN SCALE SUPPORTS THE CONCEPTION OF THE HOSPITAL AS “THE GOOD HOST” AND A PLACE WHERE PATIENTS AND VISITORS CAN EASILY GET AROUND AND WHERE THEY FEEL AT HOME.”
ARCHITECTURE Aurora provides the framework for the individual and the dayto-day experiences that you - whether a patient, employee, relative or student - bring with you. The wing structure of Aurora is based on a classic, Danish building typology signalling recognisability, obligingness and safety for the users. The human scale supports the conception of the hospital as ”the good host” and a place where patients and visitors can easily get around and where they feel at home. Approaching Aurora, you are met by an inviting and recognisable urban scale, where the hospital complex is divided into varying units, with each their clear entrance and reception areas. The architecture addresses two overall challenges: The design of holistic, worthy and consistent treatment facilities making patients and relatives feel welcome, and the development of an innovative framework for an inspiring and cross-
6 Aurora
disciplinary research environment for employees and students. The architecture of New OUH meets both these challenges with the introduction of ”The Large House” and ”The City Quarters”. ”The Large House” is a continuous and compact building stock with short logistic and technical distances. ”The City Quarters” are made up of distinctive building units and intimate outdoor spaces. Diagnostic and treatment functions are placed in the lower, continuous floors constituting ”The Large House”, while the wards and outpatient clinics are located in the upper, detached building volumes constituting the ”The City Quarters”. The architecture of the new Faculty of Health Sciences (SUND) builds on the basic structure of the University of Southern Denmark, but in a new version based on current and future requirements. The characteristics of both areas are combined
in the central Connecting Zone, creating a sculptural reference point for the entire Aurora. The Connecting Zone constitutes the connecting link of Aurora and joins together New OUH, SUND and the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). The Connecting Zone etablishes a landmark in the area, which is clearly visible from the road along the clusters, from the gardens between the clusters, from the arrival area by SUND and from the stops on the peripheral road. Thus, ”The Large House”, ”The City Quarters” and ”Connecting Zone” provide a recognisable, inviting and inspiring framework for Aurora. The circular design and holistic architecture of international class will stand out as a lighthouse in Denmark and especially in the Region of Southern Denmark, supporting growth in the local community and the region.

AS AURORA, THE NEW HOSPITAL EVERY DAY FINDS RENEWED LIFE FORCE IN THE TRANSITION AND MEETING BETWEEN NEW AND OLD, THE KNOWN AND UNKNOWN, TRADITION AND RENEWAL. WITH A BUILDING WIDTH OF 14.5 METRES, IT IS POSSIBLE TO AVOID SUPPORTING COLUMNS INSIDE THE BUILDING, WHICH RESULTS IN MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY IN TERMS OF FUTURE ALTERATIONS OR EXPANSIONS.”
BUILDABILITY AND OVERALL ECONOMY Focus has been on achieving a high degree of uniformity in the clusters of Aurora for several reasons. With a building width of 14.5 metres, it is possible to avoid supporting columns inside the building, which results in maximum flexibility in terms of future alterations or expansions. In addition, the stringent and resource-conserving structure of the clusters is the best basis for an attractive price formation. The solutions applied are well-known, offering optimum competitive conditions for the tenderers. This is of great importance in terms of keeping the overall budget and generating the highest possible added value. The design of the various building types of Aurora has been adapted according to the specific requirements for flexibility and alterations. Simple, well-known and tested principles are applied. Aurora is primarily made up of pre-fabricated elements, which significantly reduces costs and makes it possible to achieve a high architectural quality at a low price. The treatment base is carried out in concrete elements and with a high degree of repetition, ensuring a cost effective price. Future flexibility is ensured by making it possible to expand the base without it interrupting day-to-day operations.

FUNCTIONS The clinical clusters are the cornerstone of the overall functional structure of Aurora. Diagnostic and treatment facilities are placed in the clusters, which function as individual entities centered around the various patient processes, while the cross-disciplinary functions in the base serve as a central resource for all clusters. The clinical clusters are composed of related specialities and are placed in large units for operational, accessibility and flexibility purposes. The flexible design of the clusters allows for the different specialities to be moved around and for entire clusters to change places if needed. Patient treatment can be both acute and planned. Particularly patients suffering from acute illness need optimum accessibility. Therefore, the Emergency Department is accentuated by means of its location and special form. Patients undergoing planned treatment know beforehand which cluster to apply to.

In order to achieve a common treatment base, the main functions such as the Operating Ward, Intensive Care and Diagnostic Imaging are placed close to each other in the base. This results in an effective use of the area and an advantageous connection between cross-disciplinary treatment functions. The base building itsef is ”bended” into a circular shape around the green outdoor space in the middle of the building complex. Thus, it is integrated in the landscape as a sequence of scenic bridges and paths leading through the buldings.

ROBUSTNESS Aurora - New OUH & SUND is designed as a durable, multifacetted construction that can be upgraded and renewed over time. The architectural principles applied allow for future alternations while still preserving the original logic and harmony. Aurora is designed as a scalable, circular construction that can be expanded - or reduced - as needed. The physcial framework has a variety of applications and can thus be adapted to future requirements. Future treatment methods will be different from those we know today. Aurora’s design is based on a high degree of adaptability to meet future requirements without it compromising the integrity of the design. Thus, patients, employees, students and relatives will always be met by the same recognisable identity when coming to Aurora - also when treatment methods are developed, the organisation is changed and the requirements for comfort and safe working conditions change character. The interior design and room sizes are standardised, allowing for a flexible use of the various spaces. The simple building principles make it possible to engage local craftsmen in the construction phase.

THE NEW HOSPITAL INTELLIGENTLY INTEGRATES THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE, WHICH HAS A WELL-DOCUMENTED POSITIVE EFFECT ON PEOPLE’S PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH.“
HEALING ARCHITECTURE Aurora - New OUH & SUND pays tribute to the synergy between architecture and landscape and applies the green surroundings as an active, healing element. In line with the Masterplan for the area as well as the Green Blue Recreational Plan, Aurora is designed as an integrated building complex, offering a large green recreational space in the centre of the area. The recreational space increases the natural and experiential values of the landscape. The area around Aurora has three identity-creating main features: The wet meadows, the apple groves and near outdoor spaces. In particular, the near outdoor spaces draw the surrounding landscape into the circular building structure. Aurora builds on evidence-based knowledge on how the body’s senses are influenced by light, sound and smell. Positive sense experiences result in happier and more satisfied patients and staff. The new hospital intelligently integrates the surrounding landscape, which has a well-documented positive effect on people’s physical and mental health. In addition, Aurora integrates movement patterns, ensuring a safe navigation through the large building complex and thus an effective operation of the hospital and good treatment processes.

The overall plan is oriented towards the central green space and the Connecting Zone whose shape and height will make it constitute a natural point of orientation in the area. It will help patients and relatives find their way around in the area and serve as a symbol for the employees.
SUSTAINABILITY Aurora - New OUH & SUND is based on the objective of creating simple, uncomplicated connections between buildings, people and nature. The sustainability dimension of Aurora has focus on achieving a sustainable balance between people, nature and economy and thus a durable platform for further development. The connections between people, nature and economy already exist, and we consider it an essential task to generate the highest possible value by applying synergy-creating tools. Aurora will be certified according to the leading certification system worldwide - the German DGNB system. The system covers a broad range of criteria ranging from indoor climate through process management to the environmental impact of materials, from production to decomposition. DGNB ensures a vast overview of the resource consumption of the entire area. Aurora is based on a sustainable bottom line consisting of three parts: social, economic and environmental sustainability.
