“2021 ARCASIA STUDENTS ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN COMPETETION ENTRY” This project envisions a new characterful commercial destination for cross-border trade, as established by the new Macau Masterplan. Its spatial concept is based on a series of Fluid Voids that are morphed into a continuous and dynamic volume highly connected to the surroundings. Its layout follows an urban network strategy with an open ground floor that expands public space, connecting the Border Gate to the new LRT station and adjacent neighbourhood.
OVERVIEW
FLUID VO I D M A L L FLUID VOID MALL combines street commerce on the ground floor, shopping mall on the first and second floors, a large carpark underground, and an innovative terraced rooftop, all within a sculptural organic space. The FLUID VOID Mall integrates the qualities of street commerce with the convenience and comfort of a shopping mall, creating a notable destination in the Greater Bay Area while offering a memorable urban experience in Macau.

FEATU R ES The shopping center would be categorized by two hierachy of shops which are the Anchor shops and the non-fixed Retail shops. Anchor Shops made up of flagship stores become primary focal point of the mall with the Non-fixed retail stores targeted to be made up of local brands become the secondary focal point of the mall. The retail floor layout is based on the simple lineof-site to point-of-interest rule, ensuring that all shops can be seen from a major atrium or circulation space ensuring that retail value is maintained for all outlets.

As part of the technical aspect of the mall a dynamic shading system are to be installed on the facade of the shops to protect its visitors from the scorching heat during the day. The system is composed of individual “origami” polygons that open or close to provide shade when needed. Each unit is connected by vertical cables and are equipped with sensors and a motor that would allow it to close or open as required.
