Henry County EMA Hosts CDC International Delegation of Fellows

Once again, Henry County played host to a delegation of international fellows who are here working and studying with the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA. Delegates from the country of Jordan, who are in the United States and studying with the CDC, made a day trip to Henry County on September 2, 2015, to learn about disaster relief, terrorism response and the inner workings of the Henry County Emergency Operations Center. Participants included a group of 17 public safety, military and crises officials, accompanied by several staff members from the CDC. Henry County EMA Director, Don Ash gave the visitors a tutorial on local emergency management and how it interfaces with state and federal emergency management agencies, utilizing a hands-on model display. CDC Fellows from page 1 Police Chief Keith Nichols, Deputy Chief Mark Amerman, Deputy Sheriff David Foster, Deputy Fire Chief Brad Johnson and several other fire and law enforcement professionals. Visitors also experienced a tour of the E-911 call center and a HAZMAT static display set up outside of the E911 Center. Due to its handling in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Henry County has gained a reputation for outstanding emergency preparedness. As a result, Henry County has been a frequent stop for such tours, hosting several delegations from China, as well as groups from Thailand, the Republic of Georgia and South Korea in recent years. Mt. Carmel Road Bridge closed for construction Bridge replacement is part of GDOT’s Managed Lanes project As a part of the Georgia Department of Transportation’s I-75 Managed Lanes Project which began late last year, Mt. Carmel Road at the bridge over I-75 will be closed starting today for a bridge replacement project. As a result, Mt. Carmel Road will be closed to thru traffic between Jonesboro Road and Mill Road, and will be open to local traffic only between N. Bridges Road and Jonesboro Road (east of I-75), and between Mill Road and Avondale Drive – Crown Manor Subdivision (west of I-75). There is detour signage in place to use Mill Road and Jonesboro Road to access each side of the Mt. Carmel Road overpass over I-75. According to GDOT officials, the bridge closure and detour is expected to be in place for up to nine months. The entire Managed Lanes project is expected to be completed by January 2017 and help alleviate the current traffic congestion on I-75 through Henry County.

September 10, 2015 Fall Break Fun at Henry County’s September Day Camps

Fall marks the beginning of a new school year filled with reading assignments, exams and essays. Fall break, however, is a time for relaxation and recuperation. The Henry County Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to offer four, fun-filled camps during fall break for the studious children of Henry County. Each camp has a specific age range and focus, but the registration deadline for all is September 18. Registration can be done in person at Heritage Park, the J.P. Moseley Recreation Center, the Locust Grove Recreation Center and the Fairview Recreation Center or online at www.hcprd.org. Fall Day Camp is for boys and girls ages 5 to 12 and runs from September 21 through the 25. Children can be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. and picked up as late as 6 p.m. at Heritage Park, the J.P. Moseley Recreation Center and the Fairview Recreation Center. Lunch is not provided and campers are encouraged to bring a sack lunch each day. Fall Tennis Camp is for boys and girls ages 5 through 17 and runs from September 21 through the 25 at the Richard Craig Park Tennis Complex from 8 a.m. to noon. The camp fee is $75. Music Camp is for boys and girls ages 7 through 12 and runs from September 21 through the 25 at the J.P. Moseley Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp fee is $100 and campers are encouraged to bring a sack lunch each day. Vietnam Veterans Ceremony to Be Held Sept. 19 In accordance with the 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Commemoration, the Andrew McBride Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, in partnership with Henry County Parks and Recreation, will be honoring and recognizing on September 19 at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Wall of Honor in Heritage Park. Captain Brian H. Settles, one of the first African American combat pilots to fly the F-4 Phantom in Vietnam and author of “Smoke for Breakfast: A Vietnam Combat Pilot’s Story,” will be speaking at the event. Immediately following the service, he will be available in the museum for a book signing. The 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Vietnam War is a program founded from the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act by the then Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates. The program aims to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, highlight the service of the Armed Forces during the war, pay tribute to the contributions made on the home front by civilians during the war, highlight the advances in technology related to military research conducted during the war and to recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by the allies of the U.S. during the war.
