We are so excited to see all of the projects made in honor of Jaftex’s first ever blog hop and 85th Anniversary celebration. Jaftex is the parent of several companies, 3 of which cater to quilt shops only: The Blank Quilting Corp., Henry Glass Fabrics & Studioe Fabrics. Each of these companies and its employees could not be more proud to be a part of this special celebratory blog hop. Thanks to all of our dear friends that contributed their time, skills and social media prowess in order to make this blog hop a huge hit. We could not have achieved such great results without your contributions. It means a lot to us that so many people were willing to step up on behalf of our companies and our family. We truly value your friendship and partnership. Thanks a million! Being part of a family business is very special and rewarding in so many different ways. At the current time, the third (Robert) and fourth generation (Scott & Greg) of the Fortunoff’s are holding down the fort, with several from the fifth generation on deck. With 85 years behind us, we look forward to what lies ahead especially as this industry continues to transform with lots of new advancements. We are excited to see what the future will bring and hope that you continue on this amazing journey with our family as we get closer to the very big and exciting 100th anniversary. As we look toward the future, we would be remiss if we didn’t talk about the past. Thanks to Jacob A. Fortunoff, the JAF in Jaftex, for having the guts to go out and start his own business. We could only imagine what effort was involved with starting a business from scratch in the early 1900’s. Thank you to Jacob’s sons, Everett & Dan, for their contributions to the business too. Each generation certainly faced challenges along the way and luckily no one gave up the quest to keep Jaftex alive. There is no doubt that all of these Fortunoff ancestors are looking down on us and smiling to know that their legacy lives on.Thanks again to everyone involved, both past and present. Peppered Cottons For Studioe Fabrics By Pepper Cory In early 2013, Pepper Cory approached us about running a program of “shot cottons” for Studioe. At first, we were hesitant to test out this fabric as the market is already flooded with loads of solid programs and this arena is very competitively priced. We took a leap of faith and trusted Pepper. We started with about 15-20 colors and then increased the count two times to finally reach 50 colors that we currently offer today. This fabric has gained much notoriety and if you search the internet, many people are calling it their “solid of choice.” These fabrics are 44/45” wide, produced in India and come in 10 yard double and rolled bolts. Stay tuned in 2016 for a potential update to the color palette.

In addition to designing quilts and authoring her “Simple” series of books for Martingale & Company, Kim has designed numerous fabriccollections for Henry Glass & Company, as well as her new “Simple Whatnots Club” pattern collections, available exclusively through quilt shops. Kim travels extensively sharing her quilts and teaching her easy techniques. She is slowly beginning to reduce her days away from home as her husband nears retirement. What a wonderful journey for a girl who wondered if she had what it took to make a single quilt!

From that moment on, I wanted to learn to make quilts and sought out quilt makers, usually elderly ladies, who could teach me the art. Ever since, I've been collecting quilts, making quilts, writing books about them, designing needlework tools and sharing my love of quilting by teaching and lecturing. For seven years (1976-1983), I owned a quilt shop called Culpepper's Quilts, in East Lansing, Michigan.Teaching travels have taken me to 45 of the 50 states, plus Canada, England, France, Spain, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Germany, New Zealand and Australia. Obviously, I love traveling! I have written seven books: Quilting Designs from the Amish, Quilting Designs from Antique Quilts, Multi-Block Quilts, 65 Drunkard's Path Variations, co-authored Signature Quilts with Susan McKelvey, Mastering Quilt Marking, and the most recent, Pepper Cory Quilting Pattern Collection, which came out January 2007. In addition to designing stencils for marking quilts, I also design painting stencils for home decorating, which are manufactured by StenSource International and Quilting Creations International. For twelve years, I’ve been designing cotton prints, first for Michael Miller Fabrics, then Telegraph Road Studio, Avlyn and now Studioe Fabrics. What do I do when I'm not quilting? I garden, read history and poetry, and walk on the beach collecting shells. Since 1996, my husband Rod and I have lived in coastal North Carolina. We love the beauty of our home and share it with a cat named Bamboo. 11

She lives in Nashua, Iowa, where her design studio is nestled in the country overlooking the beautiful Cedar Lake. She works side by side with her daughter Kaytlyn and mom, Jan. Leanne and Kaytlyn are designing some lines together, so keep an eye out for them. Leanne is not new to the fabric industry, as she has been designing fabric for the past 19 years. Her whimsical characters are generally the focus of her designs, both in fabric, patterns and kits. Leanne loves to work with color and finds a real passion in putting together prints, plaids and solids, where truly she feels that God gets the credit for her abilities. A few of her signature items are her "Caboodles in a Box" packaged in checkerboard boxes, her "Alphabet Soup Quilts" and "Rugs in a Mug" packaged in antique-style tin mugs. When Leanne is not designing, she is spending time with her husband Ed, or hanging out with her grown children, Shelby & son-in-law Tim, Taylor and daughter-in-law Amy and daughter Kaytlyn. The absolute joys of her life are her grandchildren Toby, Leighton and Finley. They serve as her biggest inspiration!

Since I had a king sized bed, it made sense to me to make a king sized quilt. Go big or go home, right? That quilt was in shades of mauve and dusty blue (hello mid ‘80s!). Let’s just say my fabric tastes have changed since then! I consider myself a modern quilter, with traditional roots. I’m the founder of the Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild and love speaking to different groups and sharing the modern aesthetic. I’m foremost a teacher. I teach modern quilting classes in local shops and guilds across the country as well as with the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo! I’ve also written many tutorials for my own blog, and other popular quilting blogs such as Sew Mama, Sew! and the Henry Glass blog. In the fall of 2013, I got to attend my first quilt market to promote my book Classic Modern Quilts. You can also find some of my quilt blocks in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks. She started her business as a college sophomore in 1995. Since that time, she has published numerous single patterns and almost 30 books. Her work has been published in American Patchwork and Quilting and other popular quilting magazines. Her signature look combines trendy colors with traditional influences. The designs often incorporate innovative ways to easily achieve complicated looking designs. When she isn't working on quilt designs, she can be found working on fabric lines for Henry Glass and Co. and teaching occasional classes. I have been creative all of my life, but I never learned how to sew. There were too many girls in Home Ec so I ended up in woodworking and metal class. I loved it. I started quilting when I moved to the US from Toronto, Canada. I didn't know how to quilt, but I bought a Janome sewing machine and taught myself how to sew. A little while later, I designed a BOM quilt for a local shop and shortly after that I had a booth at my first Quilt Market in Atlantic City when I was six months pregnant. What was I thinking? Or perhaps I wasn't. The rest, as they say, is history. I have written many books for Martingale and Leisure Arts, designed a lot for magazines such as American Patchwork & Quilting, Mark Lipinski’s Quilter’s Home and others. I’ve designed fabric lines for Henry Glass and I love the art of making. Many thanks to all for making this a very happy birthday to Jaftex. 25

It was a teal, purple and black square pillow in the 7th grade. After that was a basic quilt my freshman year in high school and then I didn't sew again until I was almost 20 years old in 2000. It was just a small blanket for my daughter, then I made a slipcover for the couch and a dress for my daughter. Then I did not sew anything again until early 2012, if you can believe that. Now, I am addicted to my sewing machine, fabric, patterns, etc. I am by no means an expert and I can't even really call myself "experienced", yet I manage to follow complicated patterns with ease. I want my friends and family who say "Oh I wish I could do that" to know that they can do it. I want you to know that you can do it too.

She loves to share photos of her customers' quilts and her knowledge of quilting, etc. on her blog. Been making quilts since 2003. Been machine quilting since 2004. Been professionally quilting on a long-arm since 2011. I sneak little surprises in nearly every quilt top that I quilt - my customers get a kick out of it. Sometimes they have to look really hard, and sometimes they don't find them and I have to show them where the surprises are. I have a wicked sense of humor. My favorite style of quilts are whimsical. I nearly lost the sight in one of my eyes in 2011, right after I started my quilting business - I am legally blind; it is like looking through wax paper. You would think that would deter me from continuing with my business, but, actually, I can see textures more easily in my quilting and have come to love fabric with textures. 35

I created my first "wedding" dress from some old curtains at the age of 4 so I could "marry" a little boy down the street. My real love of sewing began with a Home Economics class in 1961. This love continued to grow and I made my first quilt in 1970. For several years I made my living from the sale of hand made and hand embroidered peasant blouses and belts that I sold in a local boutique. In 2012 I joined the Henry Glass family and I've created nine collections to date. Look for my latest, "Purely Christmas", at your local quilt shop in 2016.
