1. Los Angeles CALA Gallery Landscape as architecture USC Arch 302b: Spring 2017 Instructor: Maria Esnaola Location: Los Angeles, CA Project Length: 3 months Individual Work

This project is located in LA Downtown. The location is critical to this project as it the site connects residential apartments, Grand Central Market, commercial plazas together with a metro station. My design aims to not only bridge the connection between city programs, but also bring people together from various locations, jobs, and social classes in Downtown Los Angeles. The site is situated in the famous Angel Knoll which is a deeply sloped hillside. I want to utilize the landscape and create circulations between the metro station and food court downhill and market place uphill. As a result, the landscape becomes the architecture itself where roof and ground are indistinguishable. This allowed interaction between human and architecture.

Street Pedestrian The site is situated in one of the most busy street South Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. With programs such as bank, resturaunt, apartments and government buildings along the street, it is imparative to design to unify pedestrians from different programs in downtown.

2. heavy Timber comprehensive studio Mass Timber structure as sustainable material for future midrise USC Arch 500a: Fall 2018 Instructor: Charles Lagreco Location: Los Angeles, CA Project Length: 3 months

This project aims to develop a critically and disciplinary relevant comprehensive building design. As the potential for mass timber to become the dominant material for future sustainable cities has gained huge traction in 2018, evolving codes and increasing availability of mass timber, I wanted to explore the growth and potential of CLT panels and mass timber structure as it provides fast onsite fabrication, sustainable design, and a natural aesthetics. The concept of my design is to challenge the idea of a open floor office plan. Inspired by the game Tetris, I want to divide the building into pieces in section and turn them into interlocking pieces that allow access between units, double height spaces, and non-repetitive interior space.

Exploration of Open Space My project exploit a 12’x12’ column spacing heavy timber structral frame. The structure, thus, divide the architecture into 12’ x 12’ modules. Exploring the possibilities within the modular block, I selected and combined several modules to create open space on all four sides and construct a volume that interlocks with the rest of interior on different levels.

Wood Joint Study Models The series of photos above shows the progress of constructing a wood joint that is used in my heavy timber structure. The three pieces, columns and beams, interlock with each other that forms a rigid structure

Interlocking Units and Programs By interlocking different programs and units in both plans and sections, I have created a spatial condition where the boundary of office, exterior space, and lounge are no longer limited by floor areas. People can work, relax, and entertain at the same level and units can expand vertically that allows vertical circulation and more interactions.

3. Point CLoud Research studio Point Cloud as digital design tool USC Arch 402b: Spring 2018 Instructor: Lisa Little Location: Los Angeles, CA Project Length: 3 months

This project aims to conduct research on the potential impact of point cloud as a digital design approach for architecture and further applications. I explored methodologies for introducing disorder and disruption into the otherwise infertile digital design process, testing the effects of hansiness, craft and other agent of technical surprise by the inhuman perfection of conventional digital design. The process of the project includes four stages: From 3Dscan point cloud to scripting, from scripting to object, from object to digital fabrication and finally from digital fabrication to architecture. Each stage is significant in its own way as it develops the potential of point cloud and provides a comprehensive understanding toward this topic.

Various degress of force

2.1 From 3d scan to scripting The first part of the project utilize the software Agisoft to 3D scan an object, in this case a sneaker, and extract the point cloud data. I further explored the relationship within the point cloud to generate a script that simulates various degrees of gravitational attractor from selected points that pulls nearby connected curves toward the center.

Applied scripts to point cloud

various degress of force/tension

2.2 From script to object The second part of the project is to apply the script I generated to a hand craft object. The analog practice and physical craft of the “hand is therefore critical as it generates unevenly distributed point cloud data. My goal is to utilize the imperfection and create a sense of motion and structure by introducing variations of attractor force, object displacements, and curve square contours.

Structure and motion

2.3 From object to digital fabrication

The third part of the project is to explore the possibilities of digital fabrication using objects and drawings generated before. What can be discovered/realized/learned when computationally derived perfect lines, created in the virtual world, are made “real through physics, tectonics and making by robocraft.

2.4 From digital fabrication to architecture The Last part of the project is to turn everything I learnt into an architecture. Thus, the concept is to combine the script I generated, object I’ve chosen, and the idea of motion and structure. The diagram on the right shows the process of transforming the object, generating different results from the scripts, and producing movement and structure of the architecture.

4. Cliff house A home without a context USC Arch 302a: Fall 2016 Instructor: Rob Berry Location: Los Angeles, CA Project Length: 3 Weeks

The house resides on a cliff of a mountain. Rather than responding to a site, the project focuses purely on the form of the building without any context. The building is sliced, shifted, and rotated as a formal exercise which produces the interior and exterior space. By inserting the building into a cliff of a mountain, I want to express the idea that this building, similar to an object, can exist anywhere in the world.

House as an assembled object The diagram above shows the manual of constructing the house as if it is an ikea furniture. In fact, I see this house the same way I see an ordinary object in my life such as a water bottle or an iphone that can be disposable but also can be mass produced.

5. Portable phonebooth Full scale phonebooth for portable use USC Arch 202b: Spring 2016 Instructor: Rick Gooding Location: Los Angeles, CA Project Length: 2 weeks In collaboration with Soo Kim and Gaurav Sawhney

The project aims to build a full scale, fully operational mobile phone booth with viable materials, usabilities, and structures. The overall form is constructed with a honeycomb structure and the surface is reinforced by fiberglass. The project was made impossible only by the advancement in computer-aided design. The structure performance was simulated and optimized in computer before fabrication. The patterns of honeycomb allows multiple applications on user interface such as social media, entertainment, and communications.

Front

Structure, Material, Mobility, and technology The project focuses on structure, material, mobility and the integration of technology. The concept is to tuilize the form of hexagons to create fodable honeycomb shell that incoporates screens, openings, and entertainment hubs. The material is critical to create a workable phone booth at the full scale. After several experiments, I chose foam reinforced with fiberglass to make modulated surfaces that are functional at the full scale. In addition, the folding between each modules allow the mobility of the phone booth

6. a sculptural residence Discover the communal space USC Arch 202b: Spring 2016 Instructor: Rick Gooding Location: Los Angeles, CA Project Length: 6 weeks The problem with residentail apartments today is the lack of focus on public space. I believe we have ignored the importance of communal space which ended up isolating outselves from neighbours. The concept of my project is to construct a organic sculpture that integrates into a courtyard typology which create circulations, facades, and openings. The sculptures are strecthed to create a large area of communal space that provokes more interactions and communications between residences.

7. silicon casting Casted silicon mold for mass production In collaboration with Matthew Boroditsky The goal of this project is to develop a method and a technique of iterative prototyping as a design methodology. At first, I have explored the process of computer automation, 3D printing and silicon casting as a way to fabricate complicated geometries. Following modeling the sculpture digitally using T-splines, a 3D printed model at 1/4 scale is prepared for casting. The process of making silicon mold to duplicate the original properties and accuracy is tested through multiple cast. The goal is to have an accurate mold a technique that can be produced at a massive scale.

8. reestablishing dinghaiqiao An urban proposal for an underdeveloped district Dinghaiqiao is an french dominated district during WW2 but was left undeveloped over the centuries. I have proposed an urban development with a HuTong typology with several alleyway in between. The goal is to enrich the lifestyle of the local residence with economic warefares. People are able to establish commercial stores on the first floor while living on the second floor
