MATTER/SPEEDO COLLAB Enhancing Experience

helm THE SWIMMER’S NETWORK

MATTER Design, a consultancy from Bath, set a brief alongside Speedo. Over half a million swimmers have stopped persuing their hobbies over the last decade. Our brief was to create a product, service or campaign that would improve this statistic.

helm

The result of the four week team effort is , a social network under the brand of Speedo. The network is aimed at making swimming much more of a social occasion. Individuals can train by themselves or engage in social activities and exchange contact details, all with help from the ‘Loop’, our completely independent electronic training aid. Upon subscription, members recieve a free Loop with charging case, memberships to all HelmHub swimming centres, personalised training schedule, a diary and a piece of merchandise from our locker. All of this is topped off with the lure of a free coffee at their local independent coffee house for a chance to get to know your fellow members. This project was completed in four weeks.

The tech inside the loop was kept to a bare minimum to prolong battery life and reduce the chance of component failure. The main component is a reciever GPS unit that works as one half of the in-house system that uses low level trillateration and a radio signal to track the user’s progress and seamlessly callibrate itself to the HelmHUB the user is in at that time without any interjection by the user.

The carry case works as a charging port and transmitter for the loop. A Lithium-Ion battery can completely recharge the loop 4 times before it needs a recharge, which is done so by the retractable USB cable built into the base. After connecting the case to your phone via Bluetooth or WiFi via WPS, the case will transmit the data collected from the previous session back to Helm.

Watch Concept

DIAL KETTLE SPLINTERWORKS WEBSITE PHOTOGRAPHY

BY Watches have always been a love of mine. With this brief we had to bring Casio up to the luxury market. With extensive research into both the Swiss watchmaking industry and the Japanese Quartz industries, I eventually created Casio’s ‘Flyboy’ range. This was a series of pilot style watches designed for the creative individual. What follows is a brief overlook at the design process.

The Flyboy has both a conventional crown that works in the traditional sense, in addition to a second positioned at 2 o’clock that manipulates the mechanical timer function and also completes the circuit between the antenna and the transmitter for the QuickPay NFC tag

The main problem I faced was the contradiction between CASIO and ‘luxury’ watches. CASIO found fame in producing very cheap watches thanks to their quartz technology, whereas individuals who were fortunate enough to be able to afford a luxury watch would never buy a piece with a quartz movement. I decided to use a Swiss Automatic movement, using aesthetic features to link the product with CASIO.

I planned to have the first 250 units, known as the ‘Heritage Edition’ shipped with this case. I believe the packaging should have just as much thought put into it as the product itself. The case comes with an extra leather band with a classic clasp rather than the Flyboy clasp, as well as a screwdriver for changing the bands and a cleaning cloth. Details include the leather belt on the case having the same clasp and being the same colour as the watch strap.

DIAL KETTLE

Ultra-long life Appliance

SPLINTERWORKS WEBSITE PHOTOGRAPHY

DIAL H₂OT is a fictional company that produce my DIAL kettle. The brief for this project was simple: in a world full of cheap goods and a throw-away attitude, create an appliance that woud last a lifetime. DIAL fights its corner against both component failure and limescale, the two biggest contributors to a short lifespan of a kettle. What follows is a brief look at the production of H₂OT’s DIAL kettle.

The DIAL Kettle was designed to fit right at home with a contemporary kitchen. With a simple silhouette, a sweeping gooseneck spout, leather detailing and pastel ceramic base, the DIAL kettle is reserved enough to fit with many kitchen designs whilst also taking pride of place on the tabletop.

TECH SPECS Temperature Dial

Select the maximum boil temperature with the dial, anywhere between 50 and 100 degrees.

Decalcifier

This funnel swaps Calcium ions for more reactive Magnesium or Sodium ions to make the buildup of limescale impossible, whilst keeping all the natural minerals and their health benefits in the water.

Rolling Boil

Using a second ‘half-power’ heating element, Rolling Boil will keep the water at your desired temperature for up to 10 minutes. This eliminates the need for power-hungry reboils.

Modularity

All electronic components are contained within individual housings that slide from the bottom of the base. Any components that fail can be replaced for free with zero fuss.

SPLINTERWORKS WEBSITE Summer Internship

PHOTOGRAPHY

In the summer holidays of 2016, I secured a month long internship with SplinterWorks. They are a luxury bespoke furniture and fittings company based in Bath, UK. Although I also contributed towards design work and the firms brochures, my main task was to redesign and build the SplinterWorks website. www.splinterworks.co.uk went live in August 2016. The screens shown are correct as of the time of original publication.

SplinterWorks Ltd is a company based in Bath, UK. After my application for an internship was accepted, I was asked to redesign their website. The site had to be updated by them on regular occasion, needed to keep to the company’s aesthetic and also had to be suitable for all mediums; desktop, mobile and tablet.

SplinterWorks create luxury bespoke commisions, both furniture and installations. They are most famous for creating a hammock-like bathtub that suspends between two walls. away from the floor. As a result, their clientel base is small, so the products had to be shown in a dramatic and romantic fashion.

The most complex system, and arguably the most important page on the site, is the Brochure Download. The page was built as a coordinated effort between myself and one of SplinterWork’s Directors. The main feature is a CRM form built in tandem with a data collection website. This enables the Splinterwork’s Directors to follow up on possible leads for future projects.

Depending on the details entered into the form, one of several corresponding brochures will be presented to the customer (for example Country differs the language and interest differs the brochure subject). This form can then be downloaded and/or printed for personal domestic or industrial use.
