Dear Sir: For several years, we have spent our vacations in California, and have come to the conclusion that New Mexico has far more to offer. We will have California relatives with us on our vacation trip this summer, and naturally we want to show them our state’s most beautiful and picturesque places. With the help of “Trip of the Month,” plus all the other wonderful articles, I’m sure we’ll be able to show them New Mexico at its best. Mrs. Charlie Elam Hobbs

INDIAN DRUMS BY W. THETFORD LEVINESS

It soon became apparent that if I was to learn anything about Indian drums, I must take my problem straight to the Indians. I attended a spring fecundity dance at Tesuque Pueblo and met Bill Garcia, a Jicarilla Apache in a U. S. uniform beribboned to denote E.T.O. action.

Buenos días, amigos de mi lama. ¿Como estan Ustedes en estos días de mayo, mes de flores, amores y ruiseñores? How are you, in this May time of flowers, dreams, and memories of love and nightingales, or mockingbirds and meadowlarks, if you prefer? It is still chilly in the evenings, so let us all draw nearer, acercarnos un poco más, a little closer around the campfires of our hearts. Let us listen to El Poeta as he discourses briefly on la lluvia, las flores, y otras cosas. Apparently the poor fellow has a severe case of spring fever. “Hablando de flores, speaking of the flowers,” El Poeta says, “flowers follow in the footsteps of la muerte, sí amigos; flowers come after the death of the rain.”
