THIS DESERT LAND

shows a portion of the great colored window in the new College of Education center at the University of New Mexico. The girl in the picture is Segried Hoyt, of Santa Fe, who was Homecoming Queen at the University in 1962. The photograph is by R. P. Meleski.

God laid his hand upon these hills And canyons with their purpled sides, And ochered sands. And what he wills Is cradled here where peace abides. The clean winds sweep cross azured space Their cadence brewed from a million years; Their soft caresses touch my face … Cleanse my soul, allay my fears.

FROM STONE AGE TO SPACE AGE

This desert land holds mystery Caught in its vast antiquity. — Jessie Brown Thomas

BY DUDLEY LYNCH

HALLELUJAH TRAIL, by Bill Gulick, Double D Western. $3.50—Based on the

Battle of Whiskey Hill, this is an interesting and amusing account of a very unusual Western incident, when a group of suffragettes and a wagon trail of 2700 cases of French champagne and 1600 bottles of whiskey were being escorted to the mining camps of Colorado Territory.

The Roadrunners The Roadrunners are a trio of young men who met as students at the University of New Mexico. In June 1963, they performed at a private party in El Paso given by Nicky Hilton, son of Conrad Hilton, hotel tycoon. This led to several months of performing at Hilton hotels. The Roadrunners combine some fast-paced humorous songs with ballads and skits worked into their act, and return engagements follow them wherever they appear. The act is managed by Echols Enterprises of Clovis.

Situated in one of these lonely stretches is the site providing evidence that the Portales area has been a cradle of civilization, continuously occupied for 12,000 years. An ancient lake bed, discovered by a modern gravel pit operator’s dredge, has yielded and continues to provide answers to the mystifying puzzles of prehistoric man. With this new prominence Portales has changed its town slogan to “From Stone Age to Space Age.”
