THE FAR MOUNTAIN by Frank O’Rourke; Morro and Co., New York $4.95. The book follows the fortunes of Blas Pelletier, of Taos, who on a trip to New Orleans in the early 1800s makes friends with an orphaned youngster, John O’Brian. The boy elects to go West with Blas and the older man takes him under his wing, instructing him in living off the land as they make their way westward on foot and horseback—and preparing him for Spanish New Mexico by teaching him Spanish, the history of the country, and the manners and customs of the people, even changing his name to Juan Obregon. His acceptance at Taos is complete due to the precise preparations by Blas Pelletier.
In the Clayton country of northeastern New Mexico you can fly a three-day journey over the old Santa Fe Trail in fifteen minutes. Below you on the map-like land is a vast picture of what the pioneers made. You see an old fort, the watering holes, the crossings, old campsites and Indian battlegrounds. You see where Black Jack staged his train robberies. But the most striking of all, you see the deep-rutted trail itself.
