FELINES & FRIENDS NEW MEXICO
SANTA FE ANIMAL SHELTER
The New Mexico chapter of Felines & Friends was formed in 2001 and registered with the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission in March 2002. In 2013, the organization became Felines & Friends New Mexico. Felines & Friends is an all-volunteer rescue and placement organization providing second chances for shelter cats in need of more time or vet care and kittens from Trap/Neuter/Return projects. Felines & Friends do not have a physical shelter and rely mainly on foster homes when cats are not on display at our adoption center located inside Petco on Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe.
Since 1939, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter has been dedicated to its mission: support animals, save lives, spread compassion. It is northern New Mexico’s largest openadmission, no-kill shelter.
Raising funds to provide the best care for orphaned cats is an ongoing concern. We do not receive any government funding. One hundred percent of our revenue is generated from adoption fees, grants and donations. We are always seeking private and corporate benefactors. As a second chance organization, Felines & Friends New Mexico works with the Santa Fe and Española shelters by accepting special-needs cats – such as kittens who are too young for placement or need to be socialized – and adults who have health or behavioral issues, most of which can be resolved with loving attention and time.
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter focuses on accessible spay and neuter programs in an effort to beat animal overpopulation at its core. Creative adoption efforts and dozens of programs provide support for marginalized animals and work to place homeless animals into loving families. Thanks to a partnership with the City of Santa Fe and the Bureau of Land Management, the main shelter is housed on a 100-acre campus complete with walking trails and play yards for daily enrichment for shelter residents, as well as single and multiuse public dog parks. Visit the facilities to experience how Santa Fe cares for its animals.
We are proud to work with other shelters and rescue organizations to place as many animals as possible and give second chances to those with special needs. To date, we have found homes for over 4,000 cats and dogs thanks to the support of the Petco Foundation and people like you. Please visit Felines & Friends adoption center at Petco in Santa Fe during regular store hours. In addition, please come meet special cats at Teca Tu inside DeVargas Center.
The shelter is not just a place to adopt an animal or to find a missing one, but a place to visit over and over again. This is your shelter–built by this community – a place to find joy with the animals.

WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE IN YOUR PET’S FIRST-AID KIT from the Humane Society Learn what supplies you’ll need to keep your cat, dog, or other pet safe and healthy. Everyone who shares a home with a pet should have a basic pet first-aid kit on hand. Keep your pet’s first-aid kit in your home and take it with you if you are traveling with your pet. One way to start your kit is to buy a first-aid kit designed for people and add pet-specific items to it. You can also purchase a pet first-aid kit from a pet-supply store or catalog. But you can easily assemble your own kit by gathering the items on our lists below.

BREED: Pembroke Welsh Corgi
SUKEY
AGE: 2 years
ABOUT: There is a 19th C. nursery rhyme ‘Polly put the kettle on and Sukey takes it off.” Sukey is a 19th C. nickname for Susan. When I remembered it, there was no other name except Sukey.
PERSONALITY TRAITS: Sukey is an active two-year old who is also quite relaxed except when delivery trucks or the neighbors are around. She guards the house and is always herding circles around her owner’s ankles. She is most glamorous and carries herself to show off her cute look. FUN FACTS: Owner Polly has had Pembroke Welsh Corgis for 62 years. When she lost her beloved Pippa, she found Sukey, and, in five days, she was part of the family. Sukey fit right into the household and now plays with Mr. Fezziwig, a dog half her size.
FAVORITES: Sukey spends most days sitting on a low wall, watching the world go by her home. She has her choice of dozens of toys but prefers toilet paper and cellophane. OWNER: Polly Wotherspoon

GRETA
AGE: A lady never reveals her age. BREED: Domestic shorthair, black ABOUT: She was named after the mysterious and glamorous Greta Garbo. This Greta is an expert mouser and avid birder, spending hours looking out the window as birds flitter about. FUN FACTS: Greta adopted her forever family, after considering several other families, by diligently staking out in front of their home for a couple of weeks. PERSONALITY TRAITS: Greta enjoys fine dining and politely sits before she is served. Once fed, she will rush over to have dessert off her kitty companion, Toby’s plate. Coincidentally, Toby was Mr. June in the 2020 Pet Calendar. FAVORITES: Gret’s fur is ultra-soft, and she has her special comfortable spots for napping. She loves to knead any cushy surface. She is loyal and keeps her human family in sight all the time. Greta hates traveling by car. Airplanes, however, are exciting. OWNERS: Greta owns Carole Engelder and Eva Moldovanyi

TITO
AGE: 13 years BREED: Yorkshire Terrier
ABOUT: Tito was a happy-go-lucky extrovert who adored being the center of attention. He loved humans more than other dogs unless it was a very fluffy female. PERSONALITY TRAITS: Tito would be the first one to greet anyone who rang the doorbell. After a good welcome sniff, he would do his famous “Butts-Up” position with head sideways on the floor and little butt up in the air. He would stay in that position until you had scratched him sufficiently.
FUN FACTS: Tito was a professional model for a dog toy company and appeared in many dog magazines. This boy knew how to pose. FAVORITES: Tito’s kitty/father, Shasta, would groom him daily. Shasta would lick his head so much that Tito’s hair would be flat against his head. He also went wild over pop-up PostIt notes, removing them one by one and barking all the while. Bubble wrap and Mr. Froggy were favorite toys. OWNER: Coreen Cordova

GEO & GIGI
AGE: 3 years BREED: Domestic shorthair tuxedo cats
ABOUT: They are brother and sister who found life on their own too much to handle and were adopted from Felines & Friends in May. They are deeply bonded and are skittish around new people but have adjusted well to their new home. PERSONALITY TRAITS: Geo loves lap time, belly rubs and kisses on the head. Gigi is sweet and gentle and loves to snuggle. They enjoy chasing wiggly things on the end of a wand, but they especially love chasing the red laser light.
FUN FACTS: Both take their bird-squirrel-rabbit watching very seriously, though they don’t like the coyotes howling. Nothing beats a good game of chase up and down the hall except a nap in the sun.
FAVORITES: Though they go to sleep on opposite sides of their owner, by the middle of the night, they are curled around each other and remain each other’s favorite companion. OWNER: Anne Beckett P H OTO BY: OW N E R S A N T A F E

TOTORO
AGE: 13 years BREED: Chug: Pug, Chihuahua mix
ABOUT: Totoro is named after the character in the Japanese animated movie My Neighbor Totoro. He came to live with his family during his final years when his original family moved to Australia.
PERSONALITY TRAITS: Totoro made an assortment of noises - snores, grunts, soft wheezing and an occasional bark or two for a treat. He was very affectionate and loved to be cuddled.
FUN FACTS: Totoro was boss over the bigger dogs in the home. On walks, he seemed to swagger side-to-side more than go forward. He also had a snaggle-tooth smile.
FAVORITES: He did a happy dance and bark for “secret” snacks. He’d tilt his head listening to our conversations, and his bubble eyes would either pop out in surprise or close into a power nap. Totoro was always a good listener and the best buddy for company. OWNERS: The Surprise Family

What to do if your pet goes missing
What to do if you find a lost animal
Up to 10 million pets go missing in North America every year. While you can hope that your cat or dog won’t be one of them, it’s important to know what to do if it does happen. Here are some steps you can take to safely bring home a lost pet.
If you come across a cat or dog that looks lost, here are three things you can do:
• Notify the right people. Contact local veterinary clinics, animal shelters, rescue groups and animal control centers. Provide them with a description of your pet, the location where they were last seen and a recent photo. • Make posters. Include your pet’s photo, name and breed as well as your phone number and any other relevant information. Post your notices on public bulletin boards at the library, community center and grocery stores, and on utility poles in your neighborhood. It’s also a good idea to share your poster on social media networks and groups. • Canvas the area. Walk around your neighborhood calling your pet’s name and any phrases you typically use to call them. Knock on doors and ask your neighbors if they’ve seen your pet. Leave them with copies of your poster if they haven’t. Search a few times a day. Your pet could be scared and may not respond to your calls right away. Don’t give up! Many pets are reunited with their owners weeks or even months after they go missing.
1. Use caution to catch and contain it. Approach the animal slowly and carefully, speaking in a calm, gentle voice. The best way to contain dogs is with a leash or inside a fenced yard. Cats should be put in a cat carrier, a secure box with air holes or in a room in your house. If the animal is behaving aggressively, don’t try to catch it – call animal control or the police right away. 2. Look for an ID. If the animal has an identification tag, you’ll be able to contact the owner immediately and arrange its return. 3. Contact a local animal shelter. If the animal doesn’t have an ID tag, take it to an animal shelter. The animal shelter will scan the animal for a microchip, which typically contains the owner’s contact information. Even if it doesn’t have a microchip, the animal has the best chance of being reunited with its owner at the animal shelter, as it’s the most obvious place to go looking for a lost pet.

MAKE SURE YOU PET CARRIES IDENTIFICATION Pets that wear ID tags are more likely to be returned than those that don’t. Make sure your pet wears a tag that includes their name and your current phone number. In addition, have a veterinarian implant a microchip in your pet. This type of ID can be detected with a scanner and has a unique number that’s linked to your pet’s information.
