ABOUT ME EDUCATION Henry A. Melendrez Corado

I am an architecture undergraduate student at Iowa State University with work experience ranging from customer relations to machinery. My strong work ethic and strong communication skills allow me to focus and pursue a drive to be able to work in a professional team environment. I am seeking the opportunity to expand my knowledge on more 3D software, different architectural styles and introduce myself to new ideas of architectural exploration. Looking towards ways to a sustainable future has led me to minor in Sustainability and Digital Media. I believe that architecture can be approached in a way that impacts our environment in a positive way to help our planet. I am always looking for ways to achieve new ways of making a building more efficient and “green.” Architecture allows us as creative and curious individuals, to explore a world of possibilities through means of interaction, aesthetics and experiences. A building or form must coexist within the nature of its surroundings and never disrupt, only enhance the overall persona of the land. Architecture should be expressed to allow people and nature to unify under a single domain, or rather provoke an emotion.

BOONE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT IOWA STATE HANSEN PRIZE NOMINATION, 2018

Fall 2018, Arch 301 Location: Boone, IA Partner: Thien “Ping” Doan The focus of this project involved taking the existing, outdated Boone Municipal Airport and proposing a revitalization of the site through of a means of incorporating the landscape. Along with the airport proposal, an urban renewal strategy to bring in more revenue would also be added.

Lorem Ipsum

CONCEPT: Initially, the entirety of the site sat on flat land. We managed to create a landscape within the architecture itself that seemlessly flows into the ground with large steel beams and green roofs. The sloping roofs would also act as water channels to bring water down into retention ponds that would gather the rain water, filter it and be used for cleaning and plumbing water within the facility. Our proposed renewal strategy consisted of roughly 10,000 sq. ft of hills and water channels to be used for a drone training/obstacle course. It would serve for the military base nearby, local farmers, delivery systems, as well as recreational or competitive use. Our proposal also included a large basement to be used for additional plane storage and mechanics classes for the public.

As an inspiration to our creative process, the Yokohama Terminal pushed for a creation of organization through the use of a circulation pattern. In this case, circulation can literally shape space. Bifurcations, field of movements and continuality are the prominent components of the circulation.

GWENDOLYN BROOKS COMPLEX NOMAS STUDENT COMPETITION SUBMISSION, 2018

Fall 2018, NOMAS Location: Woodlawn, Chicago, IL Collaboration between NOMAS members CREDIT to: David Phan, Deysy Cruz, Evan Williams, Jhonriel Ramirez, Mary Le, Muneer, Nick Piloni, Obishek Mandala, Vinay ”Our design has one purpose, driven by integration not seperation. We strongly believe that building a social agenda should be identified with the acknowledgement that each member of the society is a citizen, and therefore, is a depository of rights. Our project evolves and is centered around this ethical framework, giving each inidividual an opportunity to grow.”

CONCEPT: Challenged to propose a social setting, living space, learning and working spaces proved to be essential in this new development for the Woodlawn community. Named after a prominent black poet from the Woodlawn area, Gwendolyn Brooks, the first female black author to win the Pulitzer Prize, the Gwendolyn Brooks Complex sets out to be a place cherished and influenced by the locals. The overall complex includes facilities to promote student learning, office spaces, a nursery, rooftop garden/park, residential tower, and a market to be used by the public. “The soft edges of the buildings are intended to create a more cohesive urban experience. The landscape design on the roofs are designed to celebrate the nostalgia of the nature. The fluid landscape allows residents and visitors an opportunity to pause and absorb the natural environment within an urban setting.”

With downtown Chicago only being 8-9 miles away, depending on choice of transportation (vehicle or train), the Woodlawn area becomes a prime location for new program and commerce.

The vacant areas reflect the empty spaces that could generate a movement of population through building vacancies that generate creative thinking and activities.

The blue areas represent the circulation formation of the streets and intersections of the site.

“To educate, enchant, and inspire an appreciation of plants, butterflies, and the beauty of the natural world - Reiman Gardens Mission Statement As part of the 2018 theme at Reiman Gardens, Movement and Kinetic Structures, PRISMA becomes a structure open to exploration and relaxation. Its organic, monolithic form allows PRISMA to become a part of the natural world by providing moments of beauty through means of hammocks, irresdescent panels, cable and a complexity achieved by Arch 202 students. 4 months.

Initial concepts involved determining a site force to experiment with. In my case, I chose to deal with sound captured at the site that was natural and non-natural to develop collages that express this force of sound.

PRISMA was constructed and assembled in Iowa. Thus, this monolothic form of cables, timber, acrylic spinning infill, ham- mocks and steel hubs become exposed to the harsh elements present in the outdoors. Iowa’s weather can range from freezing temperatures to a humid, hot climate. Due to this, I was able to compare and analyze any changes that occured on the structure in forces of nature such as: snow, rain, sunny and overcast weather. In snowy conditions, the irredescent panels glisten with the snow. In a field of white snow, the panels manage to create an aesthetic that is only visible up close. Water droplets form on the panels preventing them from showing off its irredescent color scheme. Similarly, in the rain, the panels manage to catch water droplets, but the rain becomes a big issue for people who may try to interact with PRISMA. The hammocks get soaked and the ground forms puddles, due to PRISMA being constructed in a spot where water drainage occurs. In an overcast, the panels manage to truly pop in their environment. A nice blue and green gradient happens when the structure is viewed from a certain angle. The timber, cables and hammocks become muted as the infill glows with a sharp intensity of colors. This type of weather becomes ideal for capturing PRISMA in its natural form of beauty and shape. In order to get the full experience of PRISMA, it is best to visit the site in clear sky, sunny conditions. Most elevated hammocks become usable and spectacular shadows appear on the ground from the sunshine hitting the irredescent panels. One of these type of shadows are seen as purple diamonds that stay still on the ground. The best experience of a sunny day at PRISMA are the dancing lights that happen from the panels bouncing and spinning. These lights play around all over the ground and seem to be flickering with excitement. Overall, in order to fully experience PRISMA in its best, usable form would be to visit the structure on a sunny day, or perhaps even on an overcast day, if you don’t mind a dull sky.

PARASITIC ARCHITECTURE CURRENT STUDIO PROJECT

Spring 2019, Arch 302 Location: New York City Partner: Mary Le New York City is known for tight spaces and limited land for new construction. Through the idea of parasitic architecture, buildings and spaces can be generated through inconventional means. Alleyways, rooftops, and walls of current, existing buildings can prove to be the location for new parasitic architecure that grows, attaches and manipulates itself to maximize space.

CONCEPT: We began our approach by challenging the current “white box gallery to determine if a gallery space can be better designed to meet a new audience of people seeking art. Developed in the SOHO district of NYC, our parasite manages to grow and expand out of its host building to create a place for vertical circulation for gallery exhibitions. Home to a collection of artists, this microscale parasitic dwelling invites the public to approach and climb the structure to view art installations at various degrees of angles. Each angle offering unique views to the eye, the architecture becomes an artistic piece in itself. Reviving the dying culture of art and galleries in SOHO by providing a unique experience of space through a steel and polycarbonate structure.
