A Mawrter is a Mawrter. And the makeup of a Mawrter has not changed over the years, from the first Lantern night, to the first snowing Lantern Night or from the building of Haffner, to the discovery of asbestos therein. During our time in Special Collections looking through decades of yearbooks, it became clear that certain qualities of the Mawrter are consistent: strength, ambition and a commitment to learning (along with the requisite sleep-deprivation and a love of cats). For this issue, we wanted to pay tribute to Mawrters of Past and Future while also honoring the Mawrters of Present. Our goal was to emulate and modernize our favorite images from the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s yearbooks. Hopefully, when you flip through, you too will see the spark of the Mawrter, which pervades each article, image and model no matter the class year. Happy Reading!

So we had some trouble coming up with a new mission statement this year. We felt like it was time for a change from the old paragraphs-long mission statement. Something shorter, more concise, quippier. We needed a single phrase to really get across what made us special. A lot of ideas were thrown around and there was some spirited banter—because let’s be real, we’re Mawrters—but I love that we could have that kind of discourse about how we wanted to represent ourselves to the community. We’re not just any old fashion magazine, one whose main goal is aesthetic. That’s why my favorite idea from the motto brainstorming is still “A different kind of fashion magazine.” It’s a little crass, sure, but it so succinctly encompasses everything this magazine sets out to be. It can’t be ignored that there is a lot about the fashion industry that is indeed very problematized. But at Bryn Mawr, everything is seen through a different lens. The reason I love this place so much is that it is a safe space for different kinds of people to communicate and say their piece with the guarantee of mutual respect and at least an attempt at open-mindedness. This magazine is a product of its environment. We like pretty things, but we also like pretty minds. And we want you to be healthy and happy and be able to love fashion for the art that it is and not the prison that society manipulates it to be. We love your body, no matter what size or color or if you are shaped like a pear (I never quite grasped what “pear-shaped” meant...) or a badger or a lamp, for that matter. I speak for the whole team when I say that we believe that everyone is beautiful, inside and out. We’re a different kind of fashion magazine, for a different kind of school, for a different kind of woman.

Pants are for Women

eing Mawrters, we love to brag about Katharine Hepburn having gone to Bryn Mawr once upon a time. She had many of the Bryn Mawr characteristics: smart, spirited, independent. She was influential at Bryn Mawr and in Hollywood. Like her personality, her style was independent of Hollywood’s extreme standards. She has been incredibly influential in fashion, to the point of creating menswear inspired trends for women’s fashion. At a time when menswear for women was frowned upon, Hepburn carved her own path and wore what she wanted to. She essentially created the trousers look for women and they would become her signature look. Today the barrier between men’s and women’s clothing has been broken down relentlessly and effectively. People sometimes wear clothing that is considered heteronormative, but luckily for us Bryn Mawr is a place where fashion and non-heteronormativity coexist. It is interesting that it is now socially acceptable for women to wear men’s clothing but not for men to wear women’s clothing. Suits are very popular for women. Yes, I know what you’re thinking: suits have always been around for women, duh. Wrong. Women’s versions of menswear have been made but not the real thing. Now the runways have a much more androgynous look. They are no longer tailored to a woman’s body. Who needs something so tight-fitting anyway? The whole point of menswear meshing with women’s clothing is
that it is comfortable. The ideal tuxedo for women is one that is effortless and fashion-forward simultaneously. Some women who do it famously well include Rihanna, who wore a fitted Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo to the Met Ball, and Ashley Olsen, who wore a classy Calvin Klein tux to the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) awards. These women, along with Katharine Hepburn, make stylize menswear using a signature piece. What if you’re not an international star with millions of dollars? Obviously there are other menswear articles of clothing to buy and wear to something a little more casual than the infamous Met Ball. Straight-leg trousers have been around since the dawn of time but newer styles are coming from top designers and spreading their influence to trendy chain stores like H&M. Now that trousers and tuxes are affordable and accessible, it’s time to buy a fabulous pair of those pants. It’s such a fun and inspiring trend, so take charge and make it your own. Embrace the menswear trend for women and make that daring purchase. You’ll have a cool and comfortable pair of pants that can be dressed up and down for any occassion.

f you are looking for foolproof beginner’s hair and makeup advice, tutorials, or general beauty information, then The Beauty Department is the place for you. Originally launched by Lauren Conrad, but currently run by Amy Nadine and Kristin Ess, this blog has everything related to beauty. From creative makeup tutorials to fun hair styles, they cover all their bases. Amy Nadine, who creates all the makeup looks and advice, is spot-on in her creation of doable, accessible looks with perfect product recommendations. When it comes to hair, Kristin Ess knows what she’s doing. Her styles are effortless and beautiful, and something everyone can do at home.
I
f you ever glance at the beauty section on YouTube, then you have probably seen Michelle. As the unofficial queen of beauty tutorials, Michelle started on YouTube way back in 2007 and she hasn’t slowed down ever since. She is now a spokesperson for Lancôme, and she owns her own makeup line, as well as having almost 5 million subscribers on YouTube. Michelle’s tutorials are beautifully laid out and recorded, easy to follow, and always creative. She has a whole range of looks in her arsenal, from a simple date night or school day makeup to full-on costume tutorials, such as Lady Gaga, Barbie, and Taylor Swift. This girl does it all, and she does it with a remarkable amount of talent. Any makeup looks or advice you need, Michelle can provide!

A
little less well-known is Vivianna from the blog, Vivianna Does Makeup. Born and raised in the UK, Vivianna’s style is much more laid back; her looks are beautiful, but never overdone. She frequently posts written tutorials with full lists of products, as well as the occasional video. In addition, she provides detailed and helpful weekly reviews of up-and-coming products, as well as the occasional OOTD (outfit of the day). Vivianna never fails to post weekly updates on her current favorite products for deep-conditioning, volumizing, de-frizzing, and everything else. She may be British, but she uses almost all exclusively American products, just for our benefit.

isa’s channel is strictly makeup, and she certainly knows what she’s doing. As a makeup artist in the UK, Lisa works with celebrities on a regular basis. Her most recent look was on Rosie Huntington-Whitely on the cover of Glamour. Lisa’s skill and ability are apparent in all of her easy-to-follow videos. She offers tutorials on celebrity styles, everyday looks, tips and tricks for beginners, and more - all while making sure to balance her use of affordable products with more high-end ones. Lisa’s makeup looks are beautiful and wearable. Who wouldn’t want to look like a celebrity?

anya’s looks are always affordable, easy, and diverse. Hailing from the UK as well, Tanya’s tutorials are perfect for those who have little to no experience with makeup. She outlines every step, offers multiple product recommendations, and makes sure to give tips and tricks along the way. She offers looks for daytime, nighttime, seasonal events, and even copycat celebrity looks. Her bubbly personality and occasional giveaway prizes are simply icing on the cake. If you are looking for the perfect stepping stone into the world of YouTube beauty, look no further than 9 Tanya!

Finding inspiration from the world’s most fabulous runways.

ermés, Prada, St. Laurent, and Alexander McQueen are some of the most respected names in the fashion industry. Seeing their fabulous designs on the runway is a breath -taking experience. We ooh and ahh over their masterful creations while flicking through pictures on Vogue and dream about carrying one of those gorgeous, classic Chanel bags with leather-stitched magnolia. Unfortunately, we are poor college students, doomed to only dreams of wearing a Valentino gown. It’s like going to a museum—you can look, but you can’t touch. Yet, even if we could afford it, would you ever wear this in real life? This Alexander McQueen dress is beautifully created,

iu Miu’s (a youthful subset of the Prada brand) FW2013 collection was slightly eccentric with Olive Oyl-esque styling and polka dots. The dresses tended to be long (some of the hems went well below the knee) and were acessorized with thick belts to add shape. Polka dot dresses (such as the one to the lower right) are plentiful at H&M and Forever 21. This particular short polka dot dress can be dressed up with heels and a high, curly pony tail or dressed down with a head band and flats. Prada paired her outfits with polka dot scarves tied around the models’ necks in a sailor-like fashion, while the long, striped socks were reminiscent of high school uniforms. A range of similar socks can be found at Forever21 and American Apparel. I’ve even seen some at Costco. If the necktie look isn’t for you, just Google “polka dot scarves” and you will find a variety of shapes and sizes. Sarah Burton, the creative director for Alexander McQueen, was on maternity leave while planning the 2013 Fall/Winter Collection, so it’s relatively small compared to those of the other designers, consisting of only 10 looks. Burton stays true to McQueen by giving special attention to the details. The inspiration for the collection is history’s elite from Queens Victoria and Elizabeth I to the Popes of the Middle Ages and Rennaisance. Many of the looks boast narrow waists and wide hips, as was the fashion centuries ago. It’s hardly the fashion now, so instead of wearing a corset with a bustle, it would be better (not to mention more comfortable) to wear a thick belt at the waist to create a softer form of that extreme figure. The beautiful embroidered detailing cannot be found in places like Forever 21 and H&M because it has to be handmade. In McQueen’s case, the thread is also made of actual gold. However, Forever 21 has a matador jacket with gold detailing that incorporates some of the Elizabethan style into a more modern look. Two of the McQueen looks are almost a mix of flapper (the hanging strips of black fabric and pearls) and Victorian (the dramatic waist to hip ratio) styles. The geometric patterns of the dress and tights are delicate and edgy, a look that can be found in this bomber jacket (see next page) with white studs accenting the points of the diamonds. Another example of this look can be found in the diamond-patterned tights. Chanel has been known for its elegance and class since Coco Chanel created her famous “little black dress.” While doing research at the Saks store in Atlanta, I saw these beautiful, fun

because they instantly add elegance to any outfit. These spatter pearls are a great way to look classy, but youthful. Overall, no one should be intimidated by the styles on the runway. Just because people pay thousands of dollars for a Miu Miu dress, doesn’t mean you can’t look just as fabulous at an affordable price!

Anna Wintour by Hanna Sohn
T
he fashion icon for this issue is Anna Wintour. She had some stiff competition Miranda Kerr, Rachael Zoe, Miroslava Duma and Cara Delevigne; they are all fantastic fashionistas. If you ever need some fashion inspiration, look them up and get motivated! Although Anna Wintour is not an up and coming star of the fashion industry, she consistently looks fabulous and sassy. The “devil” of The Devil Wears Prada is based off of Anna Wintour (portrayed by Meryl Streep). If you have watched the movie, then you understand how influential she is in the fashion industry. According to the movie, everyone working for Vogue and those two dedicate their lives to the fashion industry shiver at every word she drops. The effect of her charisma and effect. was probably not exaggerated. She has been the editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988 and recently, she has taken a position of artistic director of Condé Nast Publications. She also is a board member of Metropolitan Museum of Art. We can see that New York’s fashion and art fields are heavily influenced by her; it is an understatement to say just New York’s aesthetic sceneries are affected by her. So, I correct myself. The international world is always watching Anna Wintour. We all could use a little bit of Wintour’s constant stylishness to establish our own character. I thought, “how could we ever dress like those celebrities? They all get support from high end brands to advertise the brands but we don’t!”

So how could we then play with things that we do have? Anna Wintour is identified by her iconic bob haircut and cold demeanor—just like Karl Lagerfeld’s signifiers are his sunglasses and ponytail. We’ all have hair, signature face, makeup and favorite fashion items, same as celebrities. Wintour sticks to her hair and likes to play with her sunglasses. Just like her, we can all come up with our own signifier(s). There is a lot to play with: hairstyle, glasses/sunglasses, make up shoes, socks, jewelry. Even your smile is an accessory! It’s probably easy for people to go in to shops and say, “this is something that Anna Wintour would wear;”let people say that about you as well. Skinny jeans and fur might be the “it” items of the season but they do not have to be your seasonal go-to pieces. Anna Wintour wears those dresses and works those coats because they best suit her body and character. Style yourself in the way that does justice to you—not to anyone else.
