197 YEARS Carl’s Drug Store continues its historic presence in Greencastle during 2022. The 197-year-old business changed hands for just the fifth time, when Rodger Savage purchased it from Frank Ervin in 2013. The independent pharmacy is the oldest business in town, and the longest continuously-run drugstore in the United States. It was founded in 1825 by Dr. Adam Carl. Two more Carl generations were critical in establishing the legacy. Dr. Charles Carl constructed the three-story building at 6 E. Baltimore Street in 1916 which housed Carl’s Drug for 83 years. He was succeeded by Edward Carl. Then the name stayed the same, while ownership moved to outside the family. Frank Ervin took over in 1974, but the Carl name meant a lot to him. His father Richard had worked for Edward Carl. Ervin served the community as a pharmacist and business owner for 39 years. He moved Carl’s Drug to 145 N. Antrim Way in 1999. When Rodger Savage bought the business in 2013, he also passed along family ties. Savage’s father started Savage Pharmacy in Waynesboro in 1972. Savage then worked for both his father and Ervin. He became a partner with his dad in 1994, and bought him out in 1999. The opportunity to obtain Carl’s Drug was perfect, and Savage committed to preserving its legacy while providing customers with quality service for all of their pharmaceutical needs. He kept the employees and retail lines, Ervin stayed on to help, and the personal service Carl’s is known for will continue.

193 YEARS Commitment to community is evident by the continuous presence of one funeral home. The Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home roots go back to 1829, when David Detrich opened a cabinet-making and undertaking business at his 38 W. Baltimore St. home. Dave and his brother, Jeremiah S. Detrich, employed in the same professions, formed a partnership in 1851 and called it D. & J. Detrich. Dave, who had become a general in the Pennsylvania State Militia, withdrew from the company in 1881 due to his age. Jeremiah’s son, William S. Detrich, joined the business in 1890 and it was renamed J. Detrich & Son, then focusing only on undertaking. Records of the time indicate it was the “only undertaking establishment in Greencastle”. The firm continued under William until 1936 and then moved to owners outside the family. Arvid “Plug” Minnich purchased it and called the business Minnich Funeral Home. In 1940 he moved it to 112 E. Baltimore St. He formed a partnership with associate Marvin Miller and renamed it Minnich-Miller Funeral Home. Miller sold the business to Robert C. May in 1984, resulting in Minnich-Miller-May Funeral Home. May built a new facility and moved operations to 521 S. Washington St. in 1991. James A. Bowersox bought the firm in 1996 and four years later changed the name to Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home. Jim and Barbara Bowersox sold the business to their son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Andrea Bowersox, in December 2010. Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home specializes in funeral services, cremation, monument sales and cleaning, and pre-arrangements. “We are very proud of our 193 years of continuous business in the Greencastle area”

Echo Pilot

Your Hometown Newspaper The paper was started in 1849 by Mormon printer Ebenezer Robinson as the “Conococheague Herald”. There has been continuous weekly newspaper service in the Greencastle-Antrim community since. In 1853 the name of the local paper was changed to “Weekly Intelligencer”; by 1855 it was the “Franklin Gazette”; and in 1857 the paper became “The Franklin Ledger”. By the late 1800s, the name was “The Pilot” and then merged forces with the “Valley Echo.” In 1891 the name was combined to the present day Echo Pilot, which in the years that followed, purchased the “Greencastle Press”, a rival weekly newspaper also printed in Greencastle, from Col. B. F. Winger. A man synonymous with the Echo Pilot, G. Fred Ziegler, bought the newspaper in 1925 and was editor and publisher for 47 years. Prior to the purchase of the Echo Pilot by Gatehouse Media in 2005, the paper was owned by Wayne and Sharon Baumbaugh for 20 years.

Fire protection traces its history to Oct. 1, 1831, when the Town Council created the Greencastle Fire Company. It was made up of every white male resident of the borough. He also had to provide a good and sufficient bucket made of strong leather, and a jacket. Members were identified as engine men, bucket men, and ladder men, and fire protection in Greencastle was born. The American Steam Fire Engine Company was organized in 1884. After years of friction with the Town Council, the company disbanded in 1892. During the 1890s, Greencastle’s fire companies appeared to be unorganized. When an alarm was sounded from the town clock bell, turnout was scarce and often untrained. In 1896, the Rescue Hose Company No. 1 was formed. Starting with limited equipment, the company soon established a reputation. On May 5, 1904, the Borough Council turned over all fire equipment to the care of the RHC. The Rescue Hose Company Ambulance Squad was started on October 1, 1967, with initial equipment donated by two local funeral directors, who ran the service at that time. While formed as a separate entity, this organization is now an important part of the RHCs total fire protection and emergency medical services package. A move to a new station on South Carlisle Street, an addition and renovation in the 1970s, and then the latest shift to South Washington Street in 1998, have addressed constantly expanding service requirements. While many changes have occurred over the past 126 years, some things have remained the same. Membership in the Rescue Hose Company is now open to all and comprised of men and women ages 14 and over. The organization still strives to provide professional fire, rescue and emergency medical services to Greencastle, Antrim Township, and surrounding communities.

Generations of the Barr and Tracey family have grown fruits and vegetables for the public for over a century. Tracey’s Orchard continues to look ahead on providing fresh produce for many years to come. The first orchard was established in 1909 by I.C. Barr, who laid the groundwork in 1900. He was succeeded from 1950 to 1976 by Oscar Barr. The next owners were Ralph and Connie (Barr) Tracey, who sold to Denny and Ed Tracey in 1998. The two were partners until 2002. The present owners are Ed and Tawnya Tracey, and Sean Tracey, joining the staff in 2001, is manager. The business is peaches, apples, fresh veggies, and so much more. We produce and sell fresh fruits and vegetables. We also process our own home-canned goods and fresh pressed cider. Since we have been a part of the community for the past 114 years, we have an understanding that our customers deserve the highest quality tree/vine ripened produce possible. Through Antrim Township’s conservation efforts, we have placed our orchard in the land preservation program, ensuring homegrown produce for future generations.

I started out by doing this as a hobby on my own cars and for friends and family since I was a teenager helping my dad in his one-bay garage. In 1990 I got laid off from a local business as a mechanic and this is how God led me to where I am today. I received a phone call to return back to work that following Monday. I asked God if he were to send me one more job by the end of that day, then this is what I was intended to do. God came through as He always has for me and my family then and still today. I owe it all to Him and my dad, Lloyd Todd, for teaching me all I know. I’ve met so many amazing people that have been a part of my success also, and I say Thank you. - Jeff Todd

18 YEARS The Stitch ‘N Time story began when my wife Krista bought a Bernina from a dealer about an hour away from our home in Greencastle. When we took it in for service, the dealer asked if we knew anyone in our area that would be interested in starting a Bernina dealership. The rest is history! In 2004, the dealer helped us start our business in a small shop located behind the Family Dollar Store in Greencastle. About two years later, we added Baby Lock to our inventory. We continued to expand, and after nearly six successful years at the location, we simply outgrew it! We built a new 5,000 square foot building and celebrated the Grand Opening of our new store in February 2010. At Stitch ‘N Time, we are committed to your successful sewing experience. We carry a wide range of quality Baby Lock and Bernina sewing machines for both the novice and experienced sewist. Our continued goal is to provide excellent customer support before and after the sale. When you purchase a machine from Stitch ‘N Time, we will provide FREE mastery classes for the life of your machine. We invite you to visit as often as you wish, for personal instruction and tips that will make sewing on your machine a stress free experience! Of course, we are always available for FREE over-the-phone support. We are factory certified to repair Bernina, Baby Lock, and Handi Quilter machines, but will gladly repair any brand of machine. If it has a needle, we can service it.

My love of cooking began when I was eight years old helping my Mama in the kitchen standing on a chair to stir the food on the stove. She always told me to keep away from the stove saying “you can get burnt”, but I really wanted to learn. Ten years prior to opening Mi Tierra Linda on January 3rd, 2018, I experienced many jobs within the restaurant business, the last two managing a Mexican restaurant in Hagerstown. With my brother’s encouragement and assistance, we set out to find a great city and location to open a restaurant of my own. We found that here in Greencastle. My family and I have received a warm welcome and we enjoy serving our fresh and authentic tasting Mexican traditional dishes. We look forward to serving Greencastle and the surrounding communities for many years to come.
