The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce held its annual dinner and awards ceremony Oct. 19 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville. During the event, the chamber handed out its annual awards including, from left, Frankie DiCarlantonio of Scaffidi’s Restaurant and Tavern, young professional of the year; Michael Florak, community relations director for the business of the year, the Franciscan University of Steubenville; Chris Orris of Valley Hospice, chamber ambassador of the year; local educator Patricia Fletcher, who accepted the posthumous award of longtime local volunteer Anita Jackson with a lifetime achievement award; and Lisa Ward of Coleman Professional Services, new or emerging business of the year.
108th annual Meeting and Awards Dinner informs, honors and entertains
More than 250 guests attended the Chamber’s 108th-annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on Oct. 19 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville. The evening was anything but dull as members caught up at the pre-program cocktail reception and enjoyed a great dinner, followed by the recognition of fellow members and an interesting and inspiring presentation. This year’s theme was, “On Location,” with Ivan Schwarz, executive director of the Cleveland Film Commission serving as the keynote speaker. Schwarz was a driving force behind the recent increase in the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit passed by Gov. John Kasich. The revision doubles the cur-
rent $20 million cap on annual incentives and will be key in making Ohio more competitive in media production which brings jobs and money to the state. The Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit has created the equivalent of 1,729 full-time jobs and more than $400 million in total economic impact since 2011. The theme was carried out throughout the venue and program with an Oscar-style red carpet, photo backdrop and beautiful table decor. The opening video, by Leo Munday, a Franciscan University of Steubenville communications major, gave a nod to local people who have gone on to be a part of the television and movie industry as well as
films shot in and around Jefferson County. There was a somber moment of silence as guests remembered long-time Chamber volunteers and Ambassador Club members, Anita Jackson and Sharon Hibbits, who died in the weeks before the event. Jackson was also posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award with Patricia Fletcher accepting on her behalf and sharing her memories and thoughts on her good friend and colleague. The complete list of nominees and award winners includes: See DINNER Page 3 Á

Safety Council Recap The October Safety Council luncheon featured guest speaker Shari Jo Watkins with Elite Pro Coaching. Shari Jo is the owner of Elite Pro Coaching Personal and Professional Development Solutions. She is a motivation speaker, trainer and development coach and is the author and creator of the Dare to Be Spectacular! 30 days to a new you program, helping people discover and travel the path they have always wanted to make every day the best day. She discussed safety in the workplace through changing seasons and changing cultures and how to recognize obstacles before they are problems. Lunch was catered by Scaffidi’s Restaurant. November brought Chris Varcolla, ODOT District 11 Traffic Engineer. Varcolla discussed crash trends in Ohio and the Highway
Safety Program. Varcolla is a graduate of Ohio University with a bachelor’s of science in civil engineering. He has been a registered professional engineer since 1991, being employed by the city of Cleveland before transferring to the ODOT position in 1990. Since 2003, Varcolla has been the chairperson of the District Safety Review Team, which oversees the department’s highway safety program for District 11. Lunch was catered by Mama G’s. The December luncheon featured guest speaker Nathan Massie with Enertech Electrical Inc. He was born and raised in northern Virginia. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served 10 years as an infantryman and reconnaissance specialist. Nathan holds a bachelor’s degree in business and is an electrical safety consultant for Enertech Electrical in
Lowellville, where he serves commercial, health care, education, industrial and government clients throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Massie discussed the NFPA-70E Arc Flash Compliance plan, which is a six-point guide to maximizing electrical safety in the workplace. By having a written electrical safety plan, performing routine electrical preventative maintenance, conducting an arc flash analysis, generating and posting an updated electrical one-line diagram, providing arc flash training, and the appropriate personal protective equipment to employees, the employer will have taken the necessary steps to identify electrical hazards to protect employees and contractors against electrical shock/electrocution. Lunch was catered by Manfred’s.
The Jefferson County Safety Council is a longtime program administered by the Chamber in cooperation with the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. Nearly 130 local businesses are members and save on their workers’ compensation premiums by attending monthly informational luncheons and submitting biannual forms documenting safety statistics from their workplace. The monthly luncheons are open to all Chamber members and their employees. They are held the third Wednesday of each month at Eastern Gateway Community College. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. followed by a catered lunch and presentation from noon to 1 p.m. The cost is $15 per person. To receive notifications, contact the Chamber offices at (740) 282-6226 or cpeters@jeffersoncountychamber.com.

New programming for members in 2016 with more on the horizon The Chamber added new programs in 2016 aimed at educating members and helping them promote their businesses in addition to tweaking a few existing ones to make them better. “In The Know,” the weekly newsletter was redesigned to be easier to read and also to add new, more relevant sections including small business tips, a legislative update section and links to websites that members may visit often. “Brown Bag Lunches” were added on the last Thursday of each month at the Chamber offices and offer a casual lunchtime roundtable session with a different topic each month. Members bring their own lunches and the Chamber provides drinks with the cost just $5 per person. “Take Out Tuesday” is a free promotional tool for food related members that sends out weekly specials each Tuesday to over 600 member businesses and their employees. And the first-ever trip abroad, sponsored by the Chamber and Collette Travel will take place in June with an “ImpeSee PROGRAMS Page 7 Á
