A Letter From The President Dear Chamber Members: People who work or volunteer for a chamber of commerce often hear the same question from business owners and managers over and over again. “Why should I join the chamber?” And there really is no simple answer. The basic premise is that by joining, you are not only doing the right thing for the local business community, you are doing the right for your business to help it succeed. But to get someone to believe or understand the idea of chamber membership impacting a business positively can be a tough. Sure, there are inexpensive (and even free) promotional, educational and networking opportunities available as a member of the chamber that are very beneficial. But do consumers really support businesses simply because they are chamber members? The American Chamber of Commerce Executives recently commissioned a study to find out just that. They set out to determine the real value to companies of joining and becoming active in their local chamber of commerce and the study measured the results in the most important way possible – the actions of the consumer. More than 2,000 adults nationwide were surveyed and the results were powerful. I. Being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy that communicates a positive image to consumers in four specific areas. It reflects to
MAPLE-DAMEWOOD them that: 1. The company is reputable 2. It uses good business practices 3. It cares about its customers 4. It is involved in the local community. II. If a business is “highly involved” in its local chamber (has an employee on the board, on a committee, etc), consumers are 10 percent more likely to think that its products and services are better than a competing business that doesn’t belong. III. When consumers know that a small business is a member of the local chamber of commerce, they are 80 percent more likely to purchase goods or services from it. IV. When consumers know that a large business is a member of the local chamber of commerce, they are more likely to patronize them, to express favorable opinions about them, to learn more about them and to buy their products or services. However, one caveat is common in the findings pertaining to both large and small businesses; consumers
need to be aware that a business is involved with its local chamber of commerce in order for benefits to emerge. This poses a challenge for both the chamber and for you, as a business owner or manager. In the coming months, we will be putting some easy-touse programs in place that will help you tell your customers and prospective customers that you are a proud, active and engaged member. From logo decals for your front door to stickers for your mailings and lots of “buy local” ideas to use now and as we head into the holidays, we’ll help you get the word out. And on your end, take some time to learn how you can get more involved and active. It doesn’t take a lot of time or money. Have your employees volunteer, join a committee, come to a monthly, “Coffee & Connections” or add the “Proud to be a Jefferson County Chamber member” logo to your advertising or mailing. So if you are a chamber member already, make sure you put those statistics to work for you by letting people know. And if you’re not, come see what we’re all about. Chamber membership is a unique business tool that can positively affect your business’ name, reputation and bottom line.
Sincerely:
President

On May 9, the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce hosted its 31st Annual Golf Classic at the Steubenville Country Club. A good time was had by golfers and non-golfers alike. “The weather was perfect,” Tricia MapleDamewood, Chamber president, said. “When you plan these big events, you always worry about rain, but the sun was shining for the entire day. We had 23 teams, loads of volunteers and we really raised the bar with our door prizes this year, which people seemed to enjoy quite a bit.” The annual golf classic is the Chamber’s biggest fundraiser and a longtime tradition in Jefferson County. Started in 1986, the Classic brings together golfers, volunteers, staff and Chamber members and their employees each spring for a day of food, drink and friendly competition. This year’s winning team was Newbrough Photo, with the team from WesBanco coming in second. Golfers play a beautiful, but challenging 18hole course and enjoy all-day beverages, a

The Health Plan sponsors a gourmet boxed lunch for participants, and Newbrough Photo serves as team photographer for the day. The golf-outing committee begins meeting early in the year to ensure the event runs smoothly and never gets
stale. This year, John Cucarese, from New York Life, served as event chair for the sixth consecutive year and was joined on the committee by Jenn Cesta from the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County; Jim Morgan, past Chamber chairman; Brad Degenkolb from the Holiday Inn of Weirton ;
Chris Orris from Valley Hospice ; and MapleDamewood. The big change this year was the revamping of door prizes. Gone were the hats, shirts and umbrellas — in were baskets of craft beer and liquor, laptops, a GoPro, an iPad mini, golf and dinner packages, Pirates tickets, premium golf clubs and more.
Many longtime supporters of the event were once again on board this year, including Trinity Health System, which served as the title sponsor for the fifth consecutive year. The Chamber Celebrates Two Months of The Market Street Mile

On April 3, the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce launched a new program called the Market Street Mile. The concept was born when chamber President Tricia Maple, decided to measure the walk that she took many afternoons to take a quick break from work. What did she discover? An interesting and little-known fact: It’s exactly one mile from the Chamber offices at 630 Market St. in downtown Steubenville to the West Virginia side of the Market Street Bridge and back. “This makes for an enjoyable and incredibly doable walk that can easily fit into a person’s lunch hour or break time and it only takes about 25 minutes, depending on your stride,” Maple said. “Plus you get to enjoy a beautiful view of the river, Historic Fort Steuben and other downtown landmarks.” Well aware of the health benefits of getting out of the office and catching some fresh air and social interaction, the Chamber is encouraging people to take that walk as part of their work day, and it’s very simple. Those wishing to walk that mile can stop by the Chamber any time during regular office hours, which are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They

Safety Council Recap Safety Council Recap – April, May, June 2017 The April Safety Council luncheon featured three guest speakers from the BWC, Scott St. Clair, Aric Bizzarri and Mike Mathers. As a regional business consultant, St. Clair works closely with large deductible and retrospectivelyrated employers. He collaborates with chambers of commerce and various business and civic associations to help educate employers on compensation issues and to promote awareness of workers’ compensation improvements. In addition, St. Clair works with various state agencies to assist with business expansion and retention in Ohio and is also an active instructor with the Division of Safety and Hygiene. Mathers and Bizzarri are special agents with the Injured Worker Team investigating allegations of fraud and abuse committed by injured workers. During this time, they have investigated more than 850 cases and referred 89 cases for prosecution which has saved the BWC nearly $15.5 million. They have been assigned many high profile cases involving multi-state fraud rings, identity theft cases and drug deception cases and has assisted on internal cases. Both participated in the investigation of Tom Noe in the 2005 Coingate scandal. They discussed BWC updates and fraud investigations. Lunch was
catered by Manfred’s. May’s meeting was the annual awards presentation ceremony, with special master of ceremonies Anthony Mougianis, owner of Apollo Pro Cleaning and Restoration and Chamber and board chairman. Safety council members earn awards in the following categories: The 100 percent award, which is given to each company that works the entire year without a lost-time injury; the group award, which goes to those with the lowest incident rate in each group; the achievement award, which recognizes a company that has decreased its incident rate by at least 25 percnt from the previous year; and the special award, which goes to each business that has accumulated at least 500,000 hours and operated at least six months during the year without a lost-time injury. Lunch was catered by Manfred’s. The June luncheon featured guest speaker Brad Hurtig. Brad delivers a powerful message about overcoming obstacles and adversity that applies to everyone. Themes like attitude, character,

choices and leadership are all prevalent in the context of his lifechanging story. Hurtig grew up as a typical student-athlete in a small town in Northwest Ohio. Only days after finishing his sophomore year of high school, a devastating accident resulted in the amputation of both of his hands. Through hard work and determination, Hurtig soon rejoined his high school football team. His senior year, Hurtig led his team with 111 tackles and earned all-state honors — all while playing with no hands. Now Brad is taking his powerful message of workplace safety to businesses and organizations across the country. Lunch was catered by Manfred’s. The Jefferson County Safety Council is a longtime program administered by the Chamber in cooperation with the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. Sponsored by Ascent Resources, the presentation covered many topics, including the state of the industry in and around Jefferson County, permits, production, pipelines, infrastructure investment and more. Speakers included Amanda Finn, government relations manager for Ascent Resources; Mike Chadsey, director of public relations for the Ohio Oil and Gas Association; Jimmy Stewart, president of the Ohio Gas Association; Jackie Stewart, state director for Energy in Depth; and Matt Sheppard, senior director of corporate development for Chesapeake Energy. 7th Annual Burger Bash Honors Community Leader

On June 6, in the green space at the Best Western Plus Inn at Franciscan Square, nearly 150 people sang and danced through dinnertime with games, music and the most decadent, calorie-laden burgers this side of Guy Fieri. Sounds like quite the party, doesn’t it? Surprisingly, it was a business event — the Seventh-Annual Ambassador Burger Bash, hosted by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and its Chamber Ambassador Club. As Tricia MapleDamewood, Chamber president, told Chamber members in the weeks leading up to the Burger Bash, one of their goals was to prove that business events don’t have to be dull and stuffy. Based on the response of the attendees, it’s safe to say, “Mission: Accomplished.” This year’s event also was special for another reason, because the proceeds were used to help fund the newly formed “Anita Jackson Memorial Community Service Scholarship.” Recently, the Ambassador Club, a selected group of members that
assists the Chamber staff with events and membership, decided to use a portion of the proceeds from the Burger Bash to fund two scholarships for students who graduated from a Jefferson County high schools and had decided to continue their education at either Eastern Gateway Community College or Franciscan University of Steubenville. Jackson, the scholarship’s namesake, was a founding member of the Chamber Ambassador
Club and a longtime supporter of the Chamber, as well as many other local charities and organizations. She was instrumental in the creation and growth of the annual Ambassador Burger Bash. According to Ambassador Secretary Nicole Adamski, it was Jackson’s spirit and energy that helped propel the Burger Bash to great success and popularity. “Anita Jackson dedicated her life and career to making Jefferson

County a better place for working, learning and living,” Adamski said. “She was a member of numerous educational, religious and public-service organizations throughout the community and held many board and trustee positions over the years. We wish to award this scholarship to students who have the same desire and passion for community service.” Applicants were asked to provide information about their volunteerism and participation in local community activities, along with an essay about why community service was important to them. A committee of Ambassador Club members reviewed the applications and decided on the two recipients in May. Adamski, along with Chris Orris, chairman of the Ambassador Club, then worked to rally community sponsors around the Burger Bash to ensure that this year’s event was a rousing success and that the scholarship fund would receive the support it needed. “Thanks to Nicole and Chris’ passion, we not only had a fun evening,
but we also honored Anita’s memory and her passion for education and community service,” Maple-Damewood said. “That means a lot to the Chamber and to our ongoing efforts to provide our members with events that are different from the usual business functions.” The Chamber and the Ambassador Club would like to thank the many sponsors who helped make the event a success. Employees of Capital Recovery Systems Inc. and the Jefferson County Board of Elections are some of the most dedicated walkers and can be seen nearly every weekday around lunchtime enjoying their walk. The Market Street Mile sign in area at the Chamber offices has hooks and shelves
where participants can store their walking shoes and a jacket, and when they’re done with their walk, there’s a complimentary bottle of cold water waiting for them. For those who are up for a little friendly competition, the Chamber is awarding prizes for the most miles walked each month, including gift cards, T-shirts and more. “You can start any time from now until the season ends in October,” Maple-Damewood said. “The total mileage of all walkers is tabulated on the 10th of each month, with the top three up for prizes. Our winners for the month of May
received a $10 gift certificate to a Chamber member business of their choice and in June, each received a $10 Riesbeck’s gift card. Oct. 10 will mark the final day for the 2017 Market Street Mile season, but MapleDamewood said the Chamber will encourage participants to keep walking when the weather permits. “There’s no better way to get healthy while showing your support of Steubenville’s historic downtown,” she said. The 2017 Market Street Mile is co-sponsored by the United Way of Jefferson County and Anytime Fitness in Steubenville.
