A Letter From The President Dear Chamber Members: 2015 was an incredibly busy year at the Chamber. While a lot was accomplished, I still feel like there is much to be done. The plan for 2016 is to build on the groundwork that was laid during the past 12 months by continually making improvements and additions to member benefits and programming while always keeping an eye on the bigger picture — how the local business community can be made bigger and stronger. I hope, as a member, that you took advantage of our many networking, promotional and money-saving programs and events and will continue to be involved in 2016. Chamber membership is a tool and only through participation will you see firsthand how it can help your business. To recap our year, here are some of the events that were held: ¯ Twelve monthly luncheons for the Jefferson County Safety Council, featuring a speaker on a safety related topic and a catered lunch from many of our member restaurants and caterers. ¯ Ten “Coffee & Connections” where members casually network and promote their business or organization in an early, before-work breakfast setting. ¯ Seven ribbon cuttings for new or relocating businesses. ¯ Six “Business After Hours” events at member businesses throughout the

county and beyond. Other special events included the annual blood drive done in partnership with the local chapter of the American Red Cross; the Business Expo at the Fort Steuben Mall; the TriState Home & Garden Show, co-sponsored with the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce; the annual Golf Outing; and the 107thannual Dinner & Awards Banquet. On a technology front, there is the redesigned Chamber website launched in November — a very big item to be checked off the list. Not only does it have an updated, new look but it’s very user friendly, allowing Chamber members to access the membership directory, view and RSVP to upcoming special events and open and print important documents and archived publications. Visitors to the site also can link to important information about local attractions, government contacts and economic development. The mobile version is very convenient

and offers a quick way to look up and call a business or go directly to its website via a mobile device. The Chamber’s social media presence was also greatly improved in 2015 with an updated Facebook page and new Twitter and Pinterest accounts. Early in 2016, a Chamber app will be launched that will allow member-to-member discounts to be offered to fellow Chamber members and their employees. As we head into 2016, my “to do” list is different than last year but still very long. The focus will remain on making and keeping the chamber financially stable while at the same time helping our members utilize the programs that can help their business, whether it’s from an educational, financial or promotional standpoint. To that end, there will be lots of training and information provided to members on utilizing the website as a marketing tool as well as informational seminars and workshops on topics such as social media marketing, customer service, money saving strategies and other relevant topics. I look forward to 2016 being a prosperous and fulfilling year for local business, with our community working together to take advantage of new opportunities and build on our past successes.

Guests of the Chamber’s annual dinner meeting enjoyed the recognition of fellow members, interesting and inspiring presentations and great food and drink during the 107th-annual Meeting and Awards Dinner held Oct. 21 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville. Congratulations to the 2015 winners: ≤ Lifetime Achievement: Gary Cain of Cain Realty & Auctioneers. ≤ Business Of The Year: Ruff Creek Markets. ≤ New or Emerging Business: Prichard Consulting LLC. ≤ Young Professional Of The Year: Jeff Schuetz, Schuetz Funeral Home. ≤ Ambassador Of The Year: Mary Free of U.S. Bank. In addition to awards and the recognition of board members, Ambassador

Club members, committees and outgoing board members, two keynote speakers rounded out the evening’s program. Attorney Brandon Reese, president of the Jefferson County Airpark Authority, offered an informative and inspiring presentation about the history of this important facility and the plans for its future. His passion for and knowledge of the airpark were evident in his creative and fact-filled program. Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, ended the night’s presentations with her insightful and honest comments about the Pittsburgh International Airport, its past struggles and what she sees as the strategy for its future. She graciously fielded questions from the audience and mingled with

guests after the program before heading back to Pittsburgh. The night would not have been possible if not for the generous support of our member sponsors:

This quarter’s Safety Council Luncheons hosted several speakers on a range of relevant and timely topics. During October’s luncheon at Eastern Gateway Community College, attendees had the opportunity to hear speaker Chris Moffitt, patrol sergeant for the Hubbard Police Department. He gave attendees a presentation on the A.L.I.C.E. pro-

gram, which is designed to give a person the tools that could play a vital role in their survival when in a violent workplace situation. Richard L. Tluchowski, a representative from AEP Cardinal Plant, was the speaker at November’s luncheon held at the Hellenic Hall. He discussed the importance of “Lock Out Tag Out” as part of a company’s comprehensive safety program. At December’s

luncheon at EGCC, Karen D’Anniballe, president of D’Anniballe Enterprises, gave a presentation on how to define workplace violence and identify potential problems and risk factors, in addition to the components of a functioning prevention program. Begin early, utilize advisers to secure 2016 financial plans Provided by John Cucarese of New York Life, Steubenville

Did 2015 end with all your financial plans securely in place? If not, does your 2016 New Year’s resolution list include finally getting your financial house in order? Starting early in the new year can be beneficial. If obtaining life insurance or longterm care insurance is among your needs, don’t wait to seek coverage. Age and health are key factors in determining the cost for these policies, and acting before your next birthday could provide some savings. If your 2016 goals include saving more or investing more, the sooner you begin the more you can achieve. For example, if maximizing a retirement account such as Roth IRA, traditional IRA or employer-based plan is on your to-do list, then get a new account ready or alter the amount withheld from your paycheck to help meet your goals. These steps could also help you maximize your tax benefits for 2016 as well.

They can also do much of the work for you in terms of researching types of coverage or investments, allowing you a good start to your year without requiring you to stray too far from your other responsibilities. Oftentimes, people don’t do the planning they should because they “don’t have time” to learn all the details. Utilizing a professional who brings experience and knowledge to the table can help you achieve your financial goals with more confidence and in less time.

Insurance protection an important aspect of business planning Provided by Billy Petrella of Petrella Wealth Management LLC, Steubenville

Many business owners work daunting hours and focus all of their efforts on building and sustaining a successful business, but many forget a very important aspect of business planning — protection. There are many ways a business owner can protect his or her business. Life insurance is a vital asset to protect not only your family and beneficiaries from an untimely death of the lead entrepreneur, but also to benefit the business by insuring key members of the organization that manage important aspects of the business or provide intellectual value to the company. The use of life insurance in this manner is often referred to as “key member insurance” or “officer’s insurance.” Some entrepreneurs even use free cash flow in the form of a dividend to help fund a legacy plan to their heirs. Heirs who are involved in the business can then use the taxfree lump sum of cash to fund new or expansionary projects that the business currently could not afford. Using life insurance to buy and sell is a very common practice which allows partners to have access to liquidity at the time of death of another partner. It is used along with a legally binding agreement that reads that, upon the death of a partner, the other partner(s) will use the life insurance proceeds to purchase the deceased partner’s portion of the company from his or her heir(s). Protecting oneself, one’s family and one’s company with the use of life insurance can be complex, but done correctly with help from your life insurance agent, financial adviser, tax consultant and attorney can provide security, wealth and business longevity.

Hats off ≤ Congratulations to attorney Aaron Richardson of Blake, Bednar, Blake & Richardson Law Offices in Steubenville who was recently cited in an Ohio Supreme Court decision. The decision pertains to dormant mineral rights and the ownership of oil and gas leases that have unrecorded expiration dates. ≤ Riesbeck’s Food Markets Inc. recently celebrated its 90th anniversary. Founded in 1925 by Margaret Schumacher Riesbeck, the business has grown to to include 14 stores and six pharmacies serving customers in sevencounties throughout Ohio and West Virginia. Riesbeck’s currently has more than 1,200 employees. Congratulations on an amazing success story. Around the state Ohio Export Internship Program – Office of Ohio Gov. John R. Kasich The Ohio Export Internship Program is now accepting company applications. This program matches companies with students who have taken exportfocused courses at Ohio State and Youngstown State universities with a summer internship. This is a great opportunity for small businesses looking to export for the first time or enter into new markets. Companies are provided a 50 percent reimbursement to offset the costs of intern wages. Contact Tim Ross, Ohio governor’s Eastern Ohio regional liaison, at tim.ross@governor.ohio.gov or at (330) 696-8044.

Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Update There is a significant update coming in spring 2016 with a coverage offering from the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. While the BWC generally provides coverage for employees working temporarily outside Ohio, complications can arise when the injured worker files a claim in another state. Treatment can be delayed and businesses can be subject to penalties by the other state. In addition, some states require Ohio employers to obtain workers’ compensation coverage (other than the BWC’s coverage) for any work performed there by their employees, regardless of how brief their work is in the other state. A law enacted in 2014 granted the BWC authority to contract with

an insurer licensed in other states to provide coverage to eligible Ohio employers for out-of-state exposures. By contracting with an insurer licensed in other states, the BWC will be able to offer an option that ensures proper coverage, regardless of jurisdiction. The policy offering is expected to be in place in the first half of 2016. Contact Scott St. Clair, Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation regional business consultant, at scott.st.clair@bwc.state.oh.us or at (614) 357-9498.

Attorney General’s Economic Update Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has announced that the Ohio Attorney General’s Office has issued its 2015 Ohio Econom-

The manual is designed to be a one-stop guide for businesses, elected officials and economic development professionals who are interested in promoting business growth and job creation. The manual is designed to provide users overviews on Ohio laws, tax systems, funding resources and agencies that play a role in economic development throughout the state. Partner organizations include the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority, Regional Growth Partnership and the Ohio Economic Development Association, among others.
