A Letter From The President Dear Chamber Members: I never planned to live in Jefferson County. As many kids who grew up in a rural area most likely did, I envisioned myself living in the city after college, a big city like Chicago or New York. But family responsibilities brought me back home. The question then became, “Do I simply live and work here or become a true member of the community?” A community is much like a business with regard to what makes it successful. It requires continuously getting the word out about its positive aspects if it’s to survive and get better. At the same time, areas that are in need of improvement require ongoing attention and solid, measurable plans in place that ensure progress is made. It needs to be visually appealing and “clean” so that a visitor, new resident or prospective business person gets a great first impression upon arriving. It needs good people in place, with diverse areas of expertise, ambition, open minds and, most importantly, vision. It needs a day-today philosophy that has its people put more energy and effort into fixing what’s broken, than standing around discussing how broken it is. It needs an overall attitude of pride and a lack of complacency. Being a part of a community brings with it responsibility. Productive members are engaged and active.
MAPLE-DAMEWOOD They are involved in something within the community that they are passionate about – often more than one thing. They put their expertise or background to work, often, and not just to make a living but to help others or for the good of the big picture. They understand that there are good and bad things happening in any community and choose to be vocal about the positives and educated and even involved in addressing the negatives. They meet someone new to Jefferson County and say, “Welcome. Let me know if I can help you get acquainted with our area,” not, “Why would you want to come here?” They don’t seek out things to be pessimistic about but try to be grateful for the good things we have instead. Some of the things our parents, teachers and coaches preached to us as kids may seem cliche but they still ring true. “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem,” “If you can’t say
something nice, don’t say anything at all.” And, “Lead, follow or get out of the way.” Those who are not helping are getting in the way of people who are. Those who choose not to get involved should quietly respect those who do. Those who don’t know about an issue, should take the time to learn before misrepresenting the facts to the masses. Those who are loudly professing all that is wrong here, are sometimes drowning out those who are proud, happy and engaged citizens of Jefferson County. This past week brought thousands of visitors to Jefferson County for the many events and festivals going on in downtown Steubenville. It was a true representation of the good that is happening here and the potential that we have. Do we have some serious obstacles to overcome? Definitely. But the alternative is to stop trying. Be an engaged member of the community, not just decor. Be a cheerleader for what is good and an advocate for changing what is not. If you plan to live or work in Jefferson County, or both, become a part of making it better. Sincerely,
President

EGCC conferred degrees to 409 students from its Jefferson County campus and the Valley Center in Youngstown during its 47th commencement held on May 21. EGCC president Jimmie Bruce said the graduates join more than 6,000 other graduates who live and work in this area and communities across the country. Additionally, a unique partnership between a local union and Eastern Gateway Community College allowed 13 students finished a fiveyear apprenticeship program and earned an associate’s degree at the same time. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 246 and the Steubenville Division of the National Electrical Contractors Association marked completion of more than 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, accompanied by 1,000 hours of classroom training during the last five years. This is the seventh group of inside wiremen to complete the training and receive an associate’s degree of technical studies in electrical trades technology. The program is approved through the state of Ohio. Students attend classes at the IBEW training center and earn up to 47 credits toward their associate’s degree. Thanks to the program, participants are able to move to journeyman status, obtain their associate’s degree, do their apprenticeships, receive on-the job training and go through multiple certification processes all at the same time.

Attention to detail is key to a successful business Still celebrating the Pens Championship? The Cavs? Great to be around winners again, isn’t it? And what helped them win? Attention to detail! The little things. Here’s a story of how another small business became a giant in its industry, and it’s all about paying attention. Twenty years ago, Southwest Airlines began its successful quest to become the country’s most profitable airline. Their forward thinking CEO, Herb Kellerman, decided that Southwest’s advantage was going to be being customer-orient-
ed, at a time when other airlines were more concentrated on slashing services. He talked of the “Moments of Truth,” contacts of any kind between customers and company representatives. It could be the phone call that’s enthusiastic or a disruption of the rep’s day. Long lines getting on board or open seating to speed the process. Or, making the preflight routine fun, instead of a drag. Or, it could be the coffee stain, the uncleaned serving tray at the passenger’s seat that leaves the

thought “Maybe they also skip on engine maintenance.” Everyone at Southwest was trained on these “moments,” then lived by them and the company became and remains the most successful in the industry, while still being the low price leader! Southwest’s success led to a nationwide surge in training on “Moments of Truth,” and for several years, service in America improved. Then came the 2000s, and

emphasis was on cutting back. People stopped being “associates” and many were eliminated in personnel cutbacks. And when the people left, so did the services. There wasn’t time to train the new hires being brought in at minimum wage, with no benefits. So we come to today, when service is something you have to pay extra for! The point here — any business can create a tremendous competitive advantage by concentrating on the “Moments of Truth,” and watching out for the “coffee stains.” Do you eliminate
those stains every day at your business? I’m always checking ... and so are your customers. Belinsky is an adviser with the Ohio Small Business Development Center. Safety Council Recap The March Safety Council luncheon featured guest speaker Frank Hoagland, owner of S.T.A.R.T. LLC and 360 Safety Solutions located in Mingo Junction. His business began in 2005 and was created to support U.S. government deployable forces and federal entities such as air marshals and state and local special response teams. It currently implements safety training programs, on-site logistical support, rig movement support and technical and non-technical security. His presentation, called “Critical Communications,” informed attendees about how to implement a plan at their business to aid in communication and accountability procedures in the case of an emergency situation. Lunch was catered by Manfred’s. April brought James Blazer II, regional business development manager with the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, to the monthly luncheon. Blazer discussed the “Other States Coverage” plan which affects businesses who send employees outside the state of Ohio to work. This optional policy prevents coverage gaps in workers’ comp,
protects businesses from penalties and stopwork orders in other states and can provide peace of mind for business owners and their employees as they travel for work. Lunch was catered by Manfred’s. The May luncheon served as the annual awards banquet with certificates being given out to businesses that attained specific safety goals throughout the past year based on eligibility requirements set by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. Robin SniderFlohr, dean of health and public services at Eastern Gateway Community College, served as master of ceremonies. Lunch was catered by Mama G’s Catering. In June, Craig Porter, the Jefferson County game warden and wildlife officer from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, was the featured speaker. Porter informed attendees about the myths and facts associated with local wildlife and shared tips on how to handle various situations that may occur at home or at a business. He brought an impressive array of props that he used to show various varieties of snakes and other wildlife

He fielded many questions from the crowd and stayed after his presentation to address specific inquiries from Safety Council members. Lunch was catered by Scaffidi’s Restaurant & Tavern. The Jefferson County Safety Council is a longtime program administered by the Chamber in cooperation with the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. Nearly 130 local businesses are members and save on their workers’ compensation premiums by attending monthly informational luncheons and submitting biannual forms documenting safety statistics from their workplace. The monthly luncheons are open to all Chamber members and their employees – you need not be a member of Safety Council. They are held the third Wednesday of each month at Eastern Gateway Community College from noon until 1 p.m. The cost is $15 per person which includes a catered lunch. A chamber tradition Annual golf classic is a success story
On May 10th, more than 150 golfers and volunteers gathered at the Steubenville Country Club for an event that has been around since 1986. The less-than-perfect weather didn’t cause any delays and the sun even peeked through a few times as golfers finished up 18 holes and headed inside for dinner. Long time title sponsor, Trinity Health System, helped make this important fundraiser possible with many other businesses large and small contributing everything from sponsorships and tee signs to snacks and door prizes. Thank you, once again to the Chamber members who gave generously of their time, money and products to support this event which helps fund the many programs of the Chamber.
