In keeping with members’ requests for social media information, the Chamber proudly presented a new series titled “Brown Bag Lunch” in February. The “Brown Bag Lunch” series is not a sales presentation or class but a comfortable gathering and idea-sharing session where business people can learn from each other’s experience. It’s quick, inexpensive and informative and allows participants to get engaged and network with fellow Chamber members in a casual set-

ting while learning about a different topic each month. The kick-off event on February 25 featured, “Promoting Your Business Through Yelp & Trip Advisor” and was led by Brad Degenkolb, director of sales for the Holiday Inn of Weirton. Attendees were provided with a comprehensive and interesting overview of how to employ these two important promotional platforms. Various tips and suggestions were shared by those in attendance.

Franciscan University economic impact report released for study

When Bishop John King Mussio invited the Franciscan friars to Steubenville in 1946 to start a college, he probably never dreamed of what it would turn into during the next 70 years. What began as humble undertaking, where students in the first class were asked to bring their own chairs because the school had none, has turned into a dynamic enterprise that impacts the local economy in a very significant way. Today, Franciscan University of Steubenville has a budget of more than $59 million. This spending, along with spending by students, visitors and conference participants, amounts to a direct impact of almost $76 million per year. This direct spending is spent again and again amounting to a total impact of $320 million, or about 19 percent of the local economy. The spending supports more than 7,000 jobs in the local economy. The university employs 340 full time, and they pay $488,000 in City of Steubenville income tax per year. Enrollment has religious organizations with a value of more increased from 908 students in 1975 to than $3.8 million. 2,716 in the fall of 2015. Ohioʼs economy ends 2015 on high note

Ohioʼs labor market enjoyed a strong finish to 2015. Total employment rose by 15,000 jobs, the largest one-month increase since January. However, jobs numbers for the mining sector, which includes oil and gas, reflect the negative impact of low commodity prices and costly regulations. “December marks the third consecutive month of labor force participation rate increases,” said Joe Nichols, a policy analyst at the Buckeye Instituteʼs Economic Research

Center. “Employment grew strongly in the final month of the year. However, the good news did not impact everyone as the mining sector experienced more layoffs and is down 11.5 percent from the previous year. Oil, gas, and coal are in dire straits. In 2016, policymakers should be careful not to kick this industry while itʼs down. Despite hard times, the energy industry holds plenty of promise for Ohio if bad policy doesnʼt get in its way.”

Key results: • Unemployment rate. The jobless rate rose to 4.7 percent in November, up from 4.5 percent a month earlier, but down from 5.1 percent from a year earlier. • Labor force participation rate. The percentage of working-age Ohioans who have a job or are looking for work rose to 62.5 percent in November, up from 62.4 percent a month earlier. • Total jobs. Ohio added 15,200 total jobs compared to

the previous month (seasonally adjusted) and 82,700 jobs from a year earlier. • Private jobs. Ohio added 15,900 private sector jobs from the previous month and 82,000 jobs from a year earlier. • Government jobs. Federal, state and local governments lost 700 jobs from the previous month, but remain 700 jobs higher from a year earlier.

Chamber is excited to be partnering with Franciscan University to promote its sporting events throughout the year. A big thanks goes to Pete Rosaschi, head coach of the mens lacrosse team and “Gameday, Transportation & Marketing Coordinator” and Chris Ledyard, director of athletics. Watch your mail for the next event. ≤ University students are working on an informational kiosk that will be located in the J.C. Williams Student Center on campus showcasing local businesses. Chamber members will be able to provide

menus, fliers, brochures or coupons from their business or attraction to be displayed. The J.C. Williams Center is considered to be the student “hub” on campus, and this kiosk is a great way to connect students with local businesses and events. ≤ Register to participate in the annual, “Career Services Job and Internship Fair” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 6th in the J.C. Campus Connections The Franciscan University Of Steubenville and Eastern Gateway Community College are both very important parts of the Chamber and local business communities. They not only provide quality educational opportunities for students of all ages but their students, staff, faculty and visitors are an important customer base for our local businesses. Here are some updates about our educational partners: Franciscan University of Steubenville ≤ The university’s athletic Department along with Chamber

member sponsor, Hollywood City Center, presented the first “Chamber Night” on Feb. 13th in the Finnegan Field House. This inaugural event was especially important as it was held in conjunction with “Hank Kuzma” night, honoring the late Kuzma who was an exceptional member of both the business and university communities. Chamber members and their guests enjoyed the mens and ladies basketball games from the Baron Room, overlooking the courts. A beautiful hors d’oeuvre buffet and bar rounded out the night. The

Safety Council Recap

Members of the Jefferson County Safety Council gather for their annual awards banquet in 1957.

The 2016 Safety Council Luncheon Series featured speakers on two very different, yet important topics. January’s luncheon addressed sleep and safety. Kim Fonow, respiratory therapist with Trinity Health System’s sleep lab, discussed the correlation between quality sleep and good health. She said that businesses often struggle with employees who may not be reaching their full sleep potential and, as a result, are not performing at their best while at work. Fonow also provided information on strategies that can help people change their sleep habits in order to get a better night’s sleep. In February, attendees had the chance to learn about fire prevention and safety from Fire Chief Carlo Capaldi of the Steubenville Fire Department. He presented preventative measures to take at a business that can prevent fires and stressed the importance of maintaining a clean work environ-

ment. Capaldi provided tips on evacuation procedures, training programs for employees and systems that can help employers account for all employees in an emergency which greatly helps firefighters on the scene. Last, the proper use of a fire extinguisher was demonstrated and guests left with literature and information to pass along to co-workers. The Jefferson County Safety Council is co-sponsored by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. Nearly 130 local employers save on their workers’ compensation premiums each year by actively participating in this important program. The informational luncheons are open to all Chamber members and their employees. You do not need to be a member of the Jefferson County Safety Council to attend. Lunch is provided. The price is $15 per person.
