WKU Parent and Family Weekend 2014

Welcome from President Gary Ransdell

Dear WKU Parents:

Make plans now to attend our 2014 Parent and Family Weekend activities. This year we are hosting two Parent and Family weekends. The first one is for parents and family members of freshmen and transfer students and will be held on October 25. The second is for parents and family members of upperclassmen students and it will be celebrated on November 22. Our Parent and Family Weekend events are a great time to celebrate a weekend on campus with your sons and daughters, meet fellow parents, other WKU students, and WKU faculty and staff. This year we are adding an important event to our Parent and Family Weekend schedule. I look forward to addressing all of our parents and family members in the Downing Student Union auditorium on the mornings of the home football games scheduled for October 25 and November 22. This is an important opportunity for me to personally greet you and share important thoughts with you as they relate to the WKU family, your important role in it, and the experiences related to your sons’ and daughters’ higher education at WKU. Please join me on October 25 (Freshmen and Transfer Parents and Family Members) and November 22 (Upperclassmen Parents and Family Members). We will begin promptly at 10 a.m. on both dates. On October 25, Julie and I look forward to hosting the parents and family members of our freshmen and transfer students at our Festival on the Green. We will begin a picnic lunch at 12:00 p.m. on the Downing Student Union South Lawn. There will be great food, music, and the Hilltopper spirit for all to enjoy. Also, make plans to attend our home football game against Old Dominion University at 3:00 p.m. on October 25 (Freshmen and Transfer Parents and Family Members). On November 22, Julie and I look forward to cheering alongside the parents and family members of our upperclassmen students at our home game against the University of Texas-San Antonio at 1:00 p.m. Ticket information is included in this mailer.

About Bowling Green Bowling Green is Kentucky’s third-largest city, with a population of more than 60,000, and the heart of the Southcentral Kentucky region that 215,000 people call home. The city is an old one, founded in 1798 near what is now the picturesque Fountain Square Park in downtown Bowling Green, at left. It was from this city that Western Kentucky University came to be. In 1906, Dr. Henry Hardin Cherry’s Southern Normal School was the foundation that the Commonwealth of Kentucky used to create the Western Kentucky State Normal School, a teacher-training institution. It eventually grew into Western Kentucky State College and, in 1966, Western Kentucky University. Bowling Green is best known, of

Traditions on the Hill Big Red Big Red, WKU’s mascot and favorite Hilltopper, has been around since 1979 when student Ralph Carey (‘80) created the original costume. Since then, Big Red has been named one of USA Today’s Top Mascots in College and Professional Sports and frequently appears on the annual Capital One All America Mascot Team. Big Red was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2007. In April of 2014, Big Red won third place in the mascot portion of the National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Association’s Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship. The big, furry creature can be seen spreading the WKU spirit at athletic games and other events across campus and throughout Big Red Country.

The Red Towel It began innocently enough as a cloth to wipe off sweat. It became a trademark of Edgar Allen Diddle, one of the nations most successful basketball coaches. Now it is the symbol of the athletic tradition at WKU. The university’s official version of the legend is that Diddle clutched the red towel through 1,062 Hilltopper basketball games- 759 victories. The fact is that the red towel was introduced in the fall of 1946, midway through Diddle’s coaching career. Like most legends, the legacy can’t be traced to an exact beginning. The stories are as numerous as the storytellers. Each can vividly recall how the red towel got its start, but each version varies just enough to give the proper mystique to the legend.

Fight Song Stand up and cheer, Stand up and cheer For dear old Western! For today we raise The red and white Above the rest! Rah-rah-rah! Our boys are fighting And we’re bound to win the fray. We’ve got the team, We’ve got the steam, For this is dear old Western’s day!

Downing Student Union WKU’s Downing Student Union is back to being the heartbeat of campus after a two-year, $50 million renovation that transformed the building into a state-of-the-art union for WKU students. The facility formally opened in August, and now is home for a wide variety of student organizations and services, ranging from the Student Government Association to campus greek affairs to even an on-campus nightclub. But the services for students are what make this sprawling building essential to every student who comes to the Hill. Now known as DSU or the Union, the facility is home to the WKU Store on the ground floor, a department store-like facility that offers everything from textbooks and clothing to WKU gear and even an Apple branch store. It also has a USBank branch and an assortment of kiosks selling specialty items. Food is an important part of DSU. Fresh Food Company is up and running on the main level, along with a food court that includes Chick-fil-A, Papa John’s, the first Steak ‘n Shake on a university campus, WKU’s own Red Zone sports bar and grill and the Nite Class nightclub space. There’s also a Starbucks and Burrito Bowl. A recreation hall and a 24-hour study lounge, complete with a fireplace, round out

the first floor. The second and third floors include WKU’s Department of Student Activities, the Center for Career and Professional Development, the Academic Advising and Retention Center, SGA and Spirit Master offices and a wide variety of meeting spaces. The building is decorated with murals depicting the beauty of the Hill, and a bronze statue of Big Red resting on a Red Towel has been commissioned for the main floor. DSU was once a quite different building. When it opened in 1970 as Downing University Center - or DUC, as most people called it - it was like a small city under one roof in the middle of campus. The building had everything from classrooms to a bowling alley, and was home to a wide collection of administrative and student services. It was known for its twisting spiral staircases that always seemed to land you on the wrong side of the building, as well as for the broad porch that surrounded the exterior. Its dark brick interior and brown tile floors were stylish - for 1970. But after 40 years, they had become dated and worn. A group of students toured similar facilities at other universities and helped plan the new DSU. Students voted in favor of a fee to help pay for the construction.

Things to do in Bowling Green National Corvette Museum Since 1953 the Corvette has been America’s Sports Car. The National Corvette Museum was established as a not-for-profit foundation with a mission of celebrating the Corvette; preserving its past, present and future. Unitil November, you can see the sinkhole that swallowed eight cars and made global news. You can experience firsthand the passion and the excitement of America’s sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette. The GM Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant, the only place in the world where Corvettes are made, is located across the street from the National Corvette Museum at I-65, exit 28. Lost River Cave The Cave Boat Tour begins with a leisurely stroll in the valley as your guide shares the tale of the blue hole and disappearing Civil War soldiers. When you arrive at the massive cave entrance, you can board Kentucky’s only underground boat tour. Duck your head for just a moment as you glide under the famous wishing rock. Touch the cool limestone ceiling before the passage opens into a cathedral-like cavern. Sturdy shoes are recommended. For individuals with or without disabilities who would prefer to experience the cave tour above ground, free audio-visual materials are available at the Visitors Center.

Jackson’s Orchard Considered a “must-go” destination by many, Jackson’s Orchard attracts the most visitors in the summer and fall when the peaches and apples are available. It’s about four miles north of campus off Kentucky 185 (Richardsvile Road). Among the special events are the Apple Festival, Labor Day Weekend, five weekends of fall and the Pumpkin Festival.

Chaney’s has been recognized as the No.1 ice cream parlor in Kentucky in USA Today’s Top Parlors in 50 States and No.1 Ice Cream in Kentucky by iVillage in 2013.
