‌MATTOON — Batman, The Flash, Capt. James T. Kirk and maybe even Frodo Baggins are possible attendees of this year’s Big Bang Bagelfest. Taking from one of America’s favorite sitcom’s “The Big Bang Theory,” festival organizers say they’re hopeful Bagelfest participants shamelessly embrace their inner nerd — just as the show’s main characters Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard do. All things science fiction, comic book and ComicCon are welcome at this year’s Bagelfest, so guests shouldn’t be shocked when their favorite superhero is taking part in several of the weekend’s events. “Think comic book ‘BANG!’ and ‘POW!,’” Mattoon Tourism Director Angelia Burgett said. “It’s about the nerdy side of things, the geeky side of things. I think about how much fun ComicCon is and how much people like to dress up like that, and that’s been the

theme and the direction people have taken.” In its 29th year, Mattoon’s Bagelfest has taken on many faces and themes; however, its roots remain all about the bagel. “When (Lender’s) bagel factory was new to the Midwestern town of Mattoon, owner Murray Lender hosted a free bagel breakfast for the City of Mattoon,” according to the event website. “That was the beginning of the local love affair with the bagel and the beginning of the Bagelfest. Today the breakfast has evolved into a several day festival that celebrates the best of the Mattoon community.” The fest kicks off today with the Miss Bagelfest pageant and will run through the weekend with the annual parade, main stage entertainment and, of course, the bagel breakfast, among other events. ‌MATTOON — There could be as many as 1,000 runners and walkers hitting the streets of Mattoon on Saturday morning for the 27th annual “Run for the Bagel.” Organizers expect the event’s runs and walks to draw a typical number of additional participants, according to Jill Rohr, race director with the Mattoon Family YMCA, one of the

event’s sponsors. “It’s a race that always grows every year,” she said. There were 850 registered participants last year and there should be at least 100 more than that on Saturday, she added. Many Mattoon residents and others from nearby communities take part in the event each year and it’s drawn more people as the popularity of running and of Bagelfest continue to increase, Rohr added.

“It’s always part of that Bagelfest weekend,” she said. Run for the Bagel features a 10k run, a 5k run and walk, and a one-mile “fun run” for which participants have the option of being timed. Each will begin at the bus station near the intersection of Broadway Avenue and 19th Street and end at the Y, 221 N. 16th St. The 10k run is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m., the 5k run and walk are both set to start

at 7:10 a.m. and the one-mile run and walk are scheduled for 7:15 a.m. Runners and walkers should enjoy the courses for the event because they’re all fairly flat and shaded, Rohr said. There will be two water stations along the course and bagels and other food and drinks at the end. Participants can register for any of the Run for the Bagel’s events up until Saturday’s start. Registration is available in

person at the Y and a form that can be mailed along with the registration fee can be found on its website, www.mattoonymca.org. Online registration is also available on that site or www.mattoonmultisport. com. The fees for the 10k and 5k run and walk increase by $5 after Thursday. Before then, the fee for each event is $22 and advance registration includes an event T-shirt.

Fees for the one-mile events are both $7 for timed runs and walks and $5 if not timed; that fee doesn’t increase after Thursday. An awards ceremony is set to take place in the Y gym starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Awards will be presented in several different categories, most based on gender or age.

August’s title track and lead single “Center of It” on his latest album “The Upside of Down,” which focuses on God’s presence in both the good and bad times, weren’t inspired by the accident. However, they took on new meaning for the artist afterward as he meditated on the words while recovering, he said in his website’s bio. ‌ ATTOON — Time is M nearing for this year’s 2014 Bagel Bow Wow competition at Bagelfest. The annual event is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rotary Band Shell in Peterson Park. Dogs and pet owners alike can enjoy the competition. This year’s theme is just like that of the overall festival: Big Bang Bagelfest 2014. Judges for this year’s event are Jim Sears of K-9 Estates, Dr. Tammy Albin of Albin Animal Clinic, and Stacey Root of Soggy Paws. Some of the categories include Best Dog Trick, Owner/ Pet Lookalike, or the Best Bagel Dog. Pet owners must present proof of their four-legged friend’s vaccination. According to organizer Bernie DeBuhr, the Best Bagel Dog is the equivalent of the best of show category. He said it focuses on the pet and owner which best exhibit the theme of Bagelfest. Judges also will be looking for dogs that are happy, obedient, and carefree. DeBuhr has seen a lot of creativity throughout the years in the competition. He said people spend a lot of time in planning their costumes for themselves and their dogs. In the past, the competition has had as many as 45 dogs and as few as six, DeBuhr said. Clyde’s Animal Clinic will be on hand and will offer $20 microchipping with a one-year registration. The clinic will offer a wide array of goodies including gift certificates for a free new pet exam and for free heartworm products. Dr. Elizabeth Clyde is the veterinarian at Clyde’s. Zach Swon said editors don’t use smoke-and-mirrors tricks while creating an episode of “The Voice,” but there is plenty of hard work and time put in that viewers might not see, he said. “I know Blake was there many times he didn’t have to be,” Zach Swon said. The brothers made it to the final round and came in third place. The connections they made through Shelton — as well as Shelton’s wife, Miranda Lambert — were beneficial; Lambert, Shelton and Carrie Underwood all contacted Sony Music Nashville’s Gary Overton in support of Zach and Colton. Zach Swon attended the same college as Underwood and played some of the same venues as she did, he said. Flash forward to December. The brothers are no long competitors on “The Voice” but have been brought back to perform their single “Later On.” After the performance, the song topped the iTunes Country Top Songs chart in less than 24 hours. For the “Later On” video, which mainly takes place in a bowling alley/arcade, Zach

and Colton were able to work with music video director Roman White, famous for his work with artists like Underwood and Kelly Clarkson. Now on tour, Colton Swon said the crowds just keep getting bigger. But sometimes it’s the shows that don’t go right that can make lasting memories, he said — one performance in Tyler, Texas, continued even in the pouring rain when fans stayed to watch. “(It looked) like we were just getting out of the shower with our clothes on,” Colton Swon said. Zach Swon said the brothers’ first album should have a release date soon, and Colton and he will be doing some shows with bigger artists as well as performances on their own. The overall experience has been a complete whirlwind, and a lot of prayer and hard work have gone into the process, he said. The brothers invite their fans to follow them on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Their Bagelfest performance will be at 8 p.m. Friday on the main stage. Tickets are $15 for reserved seating and $10 for lawn seating. Contact Burgstahler at kburgstahler@jg-tc.com or 217-238-6839.

well in the past. However, a free bluegrass act has been added to the mix. “We’re always trying to find new ways to use the band shell because it’s right there in Peterson Park,” she said. “So we have an extra concert there on Saturday that is a bluegrass band brought in by Maranatha Baptist Church. They’ve played in Mattoon before, and I hope that might be another type of music that will appeal to people.” The main stage acts on Friday and Saturday nights include the Swon Brothers and David Nail, respectively, but this year’s lineup is a bit different than past years. “We really looked at having a bigger act on Friday night as well as Saturday night,” she said. “People are really responding to that. Our ticket sales for both nights are about the same, which typically our Friday night is a smaller night than our Saturday night. And actually Friday night and Saturday night are head-to-head as far as ticket sales.” Burgett says organizers are hoping this year’s theme has enough branches for many of the events to have a piece of the fun. “Every time we start making decisions about what to choose we look at what people can have fun with, and I think people have really responded to this one probably as good or better as any one we’ve had previously because everyone likes ‘The Big Bang Theory’ TV show,” Burgett said. The parade and Miss Bagelfest will have hints of the theme, while this year’s T-shirts resemble the show’s logo. “The Big Bang Theory” is a sitcom from Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television, which airs on the CBS. Next year will mark its 10th season. “One of my favorite themes we’ve had was when we did pirates a couple years ago, and we just had so many ways to stretch that, and this is turning out to be the same way,” Burgett said. Beautiful Bagel Baby contest, a Bagel Bow-Wow competition, a parade with some entries festooned with bagels, and dozens of other activities. Joan Record, who helped with many Bagelfests through the years, remembered how Lender enjoyed coming to Mattoon during the early Bagelfests and meeting the friendly people in town.

“He never saw a stranger. He shook all the hands he could when he was here. And he was parade marshal, too. He really loved having the bagel breakfast on a street named Broadway,” Record said. Bagelfest now provides Mattoon with a unique annual festival even though out-of-towners might wonder how bagels have a connection with a small city in the Midwest. Hamel said health problems prevented Lender from attending Bagelfests in recent years. His children and a granddaughter rekindled the family tradition by coming to Mattoon during a recent Bagelfest. “We all hoped he could come back again. We’re going to miss him,” Hamel said. “Maybe they’ll crank up production of the cinnamon or blueberry bagels for Murray in Mattoon,” Record said of the sweet aroma coming from the food plant on certain days.

EORIA (AP) — They might be considered the Three Amigos by the area’s hungry population. But Bill Saathoff, 86, Art Jenkins, 86, and Bob Hellrigel, 82, are just three of the 50 volunteers who help Heart of Illinois Harvest transport food from stores and restaurants to food pantries in the area. All three men have been volunteering one or two mornings a week for more than 20 years to the food rescue program that started in 1992 in Peoria. The all-volunteer effort transports seven tons of food a week, said program coordinator Tina Johnson. “Our truck goes out six mornings a week, and we have a van that goes out four mornings a week for pickups. Some volunteers use their own vehicles. “We don’t warehouse anything,” said Johnson, noting that volunteers pick up bread, rolls and packaged items donated by stores and take them directly to food kitchens operating in churches, schools and organizations throughout the Peoria area. Saathoff, Jenkins and Hellrigel visited Hy-Vee, Schnucks, Apple’s Bakery, Einstein Brothers Bagels, Panera and LaGondola for pickups Wednesday before making deliveries to places such as Friendship House, Hurlbut House and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Wearing bright blue HOI Harvest shirts, the three volunteers have become familiar figures at area stores and food pantries. “They know us,” said Hellrigel, a retired letter carrier who’s no stranger to making deliveries, having done it for 31 years for the U.S. Postal Service. The food that gets redistributed across the region fills

without charge for more than 20 years, she said. Along with continually seeking money to handle expenses, HOI Harvest also needs additional food donors, Cook said. “We get calls from groups and individuals looking for food all the time.” HOI Harvest also tries to help out with special events, said Cook. “We dropped off 3,500 pounds of food for the Mission for Mercy that’s scheduled to provide dental help for 2,000 people this weekend,” she said. Keeping in line with this year’s theme of “Big Bang Bagelfest,” pageant contestants will entertain focusing on many aspects of the hit television show “The Big Bang Theory” as they compete in this year’s Miss Bagelfest contest. Pageant directors are Heather Fitt and Jackee Metzger. “This is the first time that all contestants will have an interview,” said co-director Fitt. “The night of the pageant there will be questions to answer, and they will be judged on their walk and their poise.” Members of the teen group will be the only group evaluated on the presentation of their speech, she said.

Keeping in line with this year’s theme of “Big Bang Bagelfest,” pageant contestants will entertain focusing on many aspects of the hit television show “The Big Bang Theory” as they compete in this year’s Miss Bagelfest contest. The pageant will feature the Little Miss contestants singing a song about the stars and Spiderman. For the past several weeks, the preteen group has been practicing a dance to the theme song of “The Big Bang Theory” television show to

be in line with the theme of this year’s Bagelfest festivities. Each contestant will be dressed as a nerd wearing nerdy glasses and suspenders. Fitt said the teen group has really bought into the superhero realm of the show. From choosing to be an “Amazing Babysitter” to “Captain Veterinarian,” the girls have really been creative with representing themselves with a character specific to their speech, she noted. They have focused on the question, “If you could be a superhero, which one would you choose?” said Fitt, or “What makes you a superhero?”

In 1927, the only thing that Harry Lender brought with him to America (besides some clothes) was the bagel recipe he developed in Lublin, Poland. Seeing too many bagel makers in New York, he settled in New Haven, Conn. There he founded Lender’s Bagel Bakery: the company that would pioneer the bagel boom and build bagel awareness all over America. Within the first two years, Harry had saved enough money to send for his family in Lublin, Poland. The Lender family spent the next 30 years forming bagels by hand and baking them in their small store-front bakery. Their sales began to flourish when Jewish neighbors bought Lender’s bagels for Sunday breakfast. Soon, the Lenders noticed that immigrants of all backgrounds were frequenting the small bakery. In 1955, the family began to package and sell their popular product in local grocery stores. The Lender brothers, Murray, Marvin and Sam, who were by now the driving forces in the business, froze their first bagel in 1962. This meant that the bagel could still be made preservative-free, yet could be shipped anywhere. In the beginning, Murray Lender, the salesman of the family, began selling bagels to supermarkets in New York and New England. He wasn’t always received

with the enthusiasm he brought to these sales meetings. In fact, back then many buyers felt that the frozen bagel was the craziest idea they had heard of in years! Fortunately, the Lender persistence won out and soon bagel lovers all over the East Coast were enjoying the convenience and quality of Lender’s frozen bagels. The next 14 years saw many weeks on the road for the Lenders. Market by market, they expanded across America, much like the original pioneers did. After California became bagelized in 1976, Lender’s Bagels continued westward and northward, successfully reaching both Hawaii and Alaska.Today, Lender’s Bagels, whether the frozen, refrigerated or bread aisle variety, can be found in virtually every supermarket across the United States. America was eating so many Lender’s bagels that the little roundies couldn’t be baked fast enough. So, in 1976, Lender’s opened America’s then-largest bagel plant, in West Seneca, N.Y. As the bagel boom continued

to mount, in 1986 Lender’s opened the world’s largest bagel bakery in Mattoon. As the decades pass, Americans continue to discover the crusty outside and chewy inside goodness of bagels. Even a dreamer like Harry Lender would never have believed that his little backyard bakery could become the industry leader. But, as he used to tell his children, “It could only happen in America!”

ATTOON (JG-TC) — Those decorating floats for the 2014 Bagelfest parade are encouraged to aim for the stars, including stars of the comic book and science fiction world. The festival and parade have a “Big Bang Bagelfest” theme this year, paying homage to the popular “Big Bang Theory” sitcom on CBS. Regina Beals, tourism assistant with the city of Mattoon, said this theme offers science, outer space, nerds and geeks, superheroes, science fiction and many other possibilities as float decorating ideas. Beals said entries are still being taken for the parade, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Entrants can register by picking up a form at the Mattoon Tourism Office in the train depot on Broadway Avenue or by calling the office at 217258-6286. Entrants who register in advance will be given an assigned position within the parade lineup along Western Avenue west of 21st Street, Beals said. Last-minute entries on the morning of the parade will be arranged at the end of the procession. The parade route goes east on Western Avenue,

briefly south on 19th Street, and then east on Broadway Avenue past Bagelfest at Peterson Park before concluding at the Cross County Mall. Beals said the parade always has a long procession of entries, including a Lender’s float with bagels, and the parade typically lasts approximately two hours. She said many Bagelfest visitors eat at the free bagel breakfast, set for 8-10 a.m. at the DeMars Center at Peterson, before watching the parade.

Bagel Baby contest set for 2 nights ROB STROUD

JG-TC Staff Writer‌

‌MATTOON — The annual Beautiful Bagel Baby contest is scheduled to be held during the course of two nights for the second year in a row. Ages newborn to almost 1 and ages 3 to 4 will compete tonight, while ages 1 to almost 2 and 2 to almost 3 will compete Wednesday in the storefront next to J.C. Penney’s at the Cross County Mall. Each age group has a boys’ and girls’ category. The contests will start at 6 p.m. each night, with sign-in for children who are preregistered starting at 5:15 p.m. Beautiful Bagel Baby organizer Renee Fonner said the contest was split into two nights last year to make participation easier for the children and their families. She said the age groups have been arranged so that approximately half of the maximum 101 children will compete on the first night and the other half will compete on the second. Fonner said preregistration for Beautiful Bagel Baby always fills up quickly. She said some spots in the contest might still be available if preregistered children are withdrawn, which does tend to happen as families schedule their summer vacations. The contest is open to boys and girls ages newborn to 4 who live in the listening area for Cromwell’s 92.1 the Axe, 101.3 WMCI and 104.3 the Party. The child’s birthday must be on or before June 20, 2014, to be eligible. If a child turns 5 on or before July 16, 2014, he or she is not eligible. Fonner said Beautiful Bagel Baby has a theme from the “Big Bang Theory” TV show this year, just as the overall Bagelfest does, so she suggested that children’s outfits could incorporate the moon, stars or other space themes. She also said bagel themes are always welcome, but added that families can pick their own themes. No pageant wear or makeup is allowed. There will be two winners

from each age group, one boy and one girl. Winners receive a gift pack and the opportunity to ride in the Bagelfest parade. A People’s Prince and Princess also will be crowned based on money collected by the contestants for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Fonner, who works for Cromwell, said the names of

these top fundraising children will be announced July 17 on the radio. More information about the contest is available by contacting Fonner at 217-2355624 or rfonner@cromwellradio.com. Contact Stroud at rstroud@jg-tc. com or 217-238-6861.

MATTOON — There could be as many as 1,000 runners and walkers hitting the streets of Mattoon on Saturday morning for the 27th annual “Run for the Bagel.” Organizers expect the event’s runs and walks to draw a typical number of additional participants, according to Jill Rohr, race director with the Mattoon Family YMCA, one of the

event’s sponsors.

MATTOON — Time is nearing for this year’s 2014 Bagel Bow Wow competition at Bagelfest. The Swon Brothers

SWON From A1

CONTEST From Page 8

2-year-old Jocelyn Bell, of Oakland smiles for the crowd during the Beautiful Bagel Baby contest at the Cross County Mall July 17, 2013.

Bagel Baby contest set for 2 nights ROB STROUD JG-TC Staff Writer

MATTOON — The annual Beautiful Bagel Baby contest is scheduled to be held during the course of two nights for the second year in a row.
