MATTOON — Batman, The Flash, Capt. James T. Kirk and maybe even Frodo Baggins are possible attendees of this year’s Big Bang Bagelfest. Taking from one of America’s favorite sitcom’s “The Big Bang Theory,” festival organizers say they’re hopeful Bagelfest participants shamelessly embrace their inner nerd — just as the show’s main characters Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard do. All things science fiction, comic book and ComicCon are welcome at this year’s Bagelfest, so guests shouldn’t be shocked when their favorite superhero is taking part in several of the weekend’s events. “Think comic book ‘BANG!’ and ‘POW!,’” Mattoon Tourism Director Angelia Burgett said. “It’s about the nerdy side of things, the geeky side of things. I think about how much fun ComicCon is and how much people like to dress up like that, and that’s been the
theme and the direction people have taken.” In its 29th year, Mattoon’s Bagelfest has taken on many faces and themes; however, its roots remain all about the bagel. “When (Lender’s) bagel factory was new to the Midwestern town of Mattoon, owner Murray Lender hosted a free bagel breakfast for the City of Mattoon,” according to the event website. “That was the beginning of the local love affair with the bagel and the beginning of the Bagelfest. Today the breakfast has evolved into a several day festival that celebrates the best of the Mattoon community.” The fest kicks off today with the Miss Bagelfest pageant and will run through the weekend with the annual parade, main stage entertainment and, of course, the bagel breakfast, among other events. This year’s schedule sticks to the traditional lineup, Burgett said, since it’s worked BIG BANG/A3

ATTOON — Zach and Colton M Swon won’t have to turn chairs at Bagelfest. They’ve already proven themselves. The Muskogee, Okla., duo, now touring to promote their first single “Later On” as well as their first album due out later this year, auditioned during the fourth season of NBC’s “The Voice.” Judges Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher all invited the brothers to join their team. Colton Swon said the brothers were excited to just convince a judge to want them, but ultimately going with anyone besides Blake Sheldon might not have been an option. “Oklahoma alone would’ve disowned us,” Colton Swon said.

Chris August, David Nail set for Bagelfest KARSTEN BURGSTAHLER JG-TC Staff Writer
MATTOON — This year, August comes in July. Christian artist Chris August will perform a free concert during Bagelfest on Thursday evening. This year’s lineup also includes country musician David Nail. City Tourism and Arts Director Angelia Burgett said each year the Bagelfest committee partners with Christian radio station WBGL to bring
in an artist the station’s listeners will be familiar with. Burgett said August was the committee’s top choice. August spent time working with well-known artists including Robin Thicke and Brian McKnight in Los Angeles before moving back to his home state of Texas to lead worship at his church, according to his website. In early 2009 he wrote “Starry Night,” which landed him a deal with World Records in Nashville. August debuted with Fervent Records
