Bagelfest celebrating its 30th anniversary

Theme is ‘Celebrate Good Times, C’mon’ ROB STROUD

JG-TC Staff Writer‌

‌ ATTOON — What started M in 1986 as a community breakfast to introduce the new Lender’s Bagels bakery to Mattoon has since grown into an annual event that draws thousands of festival-goers to Peterson Park. Bagelfest is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, marking three decades of serving up a free bagel breakfast and other family friendly festivities. The event also will once again feature performances by nationally touring musicians, culminating with a Frankie Ballard concert at 8 p.m. Saturday. Mattoon Tourism Director Angelia Burgett said the 2015 festival’s theme, “Celebrate Good Times, C’mon,” is about celebrating the long,

continuous history of Bagelfest. Burgett said the “Celebrate” theme will be incorporated into float decorations in the annual Bagelfest parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and other

aspects of the festival. She said the parade’s grand marshal is always Lender’s Bagels, which has remained a major supporter since the festival’s beginning. “The parade is awesome. Our

parade is always huge, with lots of entries,” said volunteer coordinator Leann Polston. The parade travels through downtown via Broadway Avenue, where Bagelfest was originated, east to Peterson Park, which has hosted the festival since 2000. Polston said Peterson Park offers a lot of shade trees for those attending Bagelfest and its carnival during hot midsummer days. She said the park’s air-conditioned DeMars Center also offers relief from the heat. The DeMars Centers will host the free bagel breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, as well as bingo games from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Grimes Field at Peterson Park hosts the Bagelfest main stage, which will be the setting of a free concert by contemporary Christian artist Plumb at 8 p.m. Thursday and ticketed concerts by country

acts Waterloo Revival at 8 p.m. Friday and Frankie Ballard at 8 p.m. Saturday. Polston said the concerts are among her favorite activities at Bagelfest, adding that she particularly enjoyed performances by Blake Shelton in 2004 and the Zac Brown Band in 2009. “It seems like after they have been to Bagelfest they become big stars,” Polston said. Bagelfest’s souvenir stand will be located at the park’s southeast entrance gate near Grimes Field. Burgett said festival organizers have revived the tradition of offering Bagelfest commemorative mugs, which will be available for sale at the stand. The souvenir stand this year will accept credit/debit cards for the first time and offer the festival’s first-ever charging station for smart phones, Burgett said. She added that BAGELFEST/2

Bagelfest parade keeping with festival’s main theme ‌MATTOON (JG-TC) — There will be chances to wish “happy birthday” to Bagelfest during the festival’s parade Saturday morning. Parade participants are encouraged to help celebrate the theme of the 30th anniversary of Bagelfest, according to Regina Beals, tourism assistant with the Mattoon Tourism Department. The anniversary celebration is the theme of this year’s festival and parade entries can feature birthday cakes, balloons or other party items, Beals said. She added that entries representing the era 30 years ago when Bagelfest started would also meet the theme. “Celebrate Good Times, C’mon” is also part of this year’s theme, organizers said. The Bagelfest parade is traditionally the largest in Mattoon each year and this year’s version is scheduled to begin at

at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Beals said. She said the deadline for advance entries is Thursday but entries can still join the lineup Saturday morning. Entry forms are available on the Bagelfest website, www. mattoonbagelfest.com.

Bagel Bow Wow contest set for Saturday afternoon ‌MATTOON (JG-TC) — Pooches that look like their owners, can do tricks or are just good dogs can again take part in the Bagel Bow Wow contest that will be part of the 2015 Bagelfest. The contest is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday near the bandshell at Peterson Park. No advance registration or fee to enter are required. The contest’s categories include Best Bagel Dog, which organizer Bernie DeBuhr said is the equivalent of the best in show category. He said it focuses on how the owners and dogs best exhibit the Bagelfest theme, which celebrates the festival’s 30th anniversary. Judges also look at dog obedience and other behavior, he said. Other categories include best dog trick and owner/pet look-alike. All participants will receive prizes, which DeBuhr said the Mars Pet Care plant of Mattoon is providing. The contest’s judges will be representatives of local veterinarian clinics and other pet care businesses. DeBuhr said dogs should be on leashes and owners should provide proof of vaccinations.

these new amenities are part of efforts every year to make Bagelfest more user friendly for visitors.

Burgett said another new addition to this year’s Bagelfest will be a volunteer of the year award, which will be presented Saturday evening. She said the award is named in memory of Cecil Alan “Big Al” Krietemeier, who died on Nov. 8 at age 69.

Bagel Bow Wow Contest contestant Sammie, held by Kelly Hovius of Mattoon, competes in the Best Bagel Dog category July 23, 2011, during Bagelfest at Peterson Park in Mattoon.

Krietemeier owned and operated “Big Al’s” Concession for the past 20 years, and was a regular participant in Bagelfest. Burgett said Krietemeier went above and beyond to help recruit vendors and support the festival in many other ways.

Burgett said the award will be presented each year to honor some of the many volunteers who help make Bagelfest possible. “We have a really amazing team and have built some really good relationships with the community,”

Burgett said. More information is available at http://www.mattoonbagelfest.com/ or by calling Burgett at 217-258-6286. Contact Stroud at rstroud@jg-tc.com or 217-238-6861.

Bagelfest Beautiful Baby Contest planned over 2 days ‌MATTOON — Rain has interfered with a lot of activities this summer throughout the area, but it will not stop the 2015 Bagelfest Beautiful Baby Contest as it will be held inside. The event is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Cross County Mall today and Wednesday.

The contest was limited to 101 participants. Those participating in the contest must be newborn to 4 years old. The child could not be 5 on or before July 15. The child must also live within the listening area of 101.3 WMCI, 92.1 the Axe or 104.3 the Party.

A boy and girl winner will be named for each of the respective age groups: newborn to 1; 1-2 years; 2-3 years; and 3-4 years. According to organizer Renee Fonner, there will be a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital via a penny vote

among those competing. It’s called a People’s Choice Prince and Princess competition. The top boy and girl contestants raising the most money will be named the People’s Choice winner. Contestants can use the Bagelfest theme when choosing their apparel if they so choose, Fonner said. She said there will be three or possibly four judges.

Waterloo Revival takes the Main Stage at Bagelfest on Friday this year.

‌MATTOON (JG-TC) — Artist Tiffany Arbuckle Lee, also known by her stage name “Plumb,” will bring her more than 15 years of musical experience to Bagelfest on Thursday. Lee is now touring in support of her latest album, “Exhale,” which was released in May. Lee was born in Indianapolis and raised in Atlanta; she had intended to go to school and become a nurse, but ended up following a different path after taking on some side gigs performing music. She moved to Nashville and was signed to a label before her 21st birthday, according to her bio on Artist Direct. While Lee was trying to write music on her first label, she ended up working with her neighbor, Jars of Clay member Matt Bronleewe. The two worked together on songs and Bronleewe has also served

as a producer on her music, helping first with the band’s self-titled album, then with the follow-up “Candycoatedwaterdrops,” as well as later solo albums. Lee retained the stage name Plumb after going solo in the early ‘00s, first producing the album “Beautiful Lumps of Coal” in 2003. The songs “Sink n’ Swim” and “Boys Don’t Cry” both ended up on the soundtrack of the film “View From the Top.” “Candycoatedwaterdrops” won the Dove Award for Best Modern Rock Album in 2000 and the song “God-Shaped Hole” was featured in the film “Bruce Almighty.” In her writing career, she’s worked with artists including Mandy Moore, James Ingram and Michelle Branch, according to her bio. The Plumb concert is free and will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday on the Bagelfest Main Stage. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Waterloo Revival duo coming to Bagelfest ‌MATTOON (JG-TC) — The duo Cody Cooper and George Birge, known collectively as Waterloo Revival, will bring their new single “Hit the Road,” as well as their earlier work, to Bagelfest on Friday. Cooper and Birge have worked together since middle school, writing and performing through high school, according to their online biography. The two parted ways to attend college, as Cooper headed

off to the University of North Texas and Birge stayed in the duo’s hometown to attend the University of Texas. Cooper ended up moving to Dallas after college. The two would still play music when Cooper would visit, and in 2012 Birge convinced Cooper to come back and focus on music. That’s when the two took up the name Waterloo Revival, according to their bio. First up, the two produced a

Singer Frankie Ballard hits the Bagelfest Main Stage on Saturday night.

Frankie Ballard brings debut album to Bagelfest ‌MATTOON (JG-TC) — Frankie Ballard has opened for some of the biggest names in music, including Taylor Swift and Kenny Chesney. But on Saturday he’ll have the Bagelfest Main Stage all to himself. Ballard was born in Battle Creek, Mich., and played baseball at Western Michigan University before focusing more on his interest in music, according to his online biography. He started playing at open

mic nights and led a band by the time he graduated from college, playing more than 200 nights a year and traveling to Nashville once a month, according to his bio. and peaked at #51. The album also includes his earlier singles “Tell Me You Get Lonely” and “A Buncha Girls.” Ballard also released a self-titled extended play in 2011. Runners and walkers begin the annual Run For The Bagel at the starting area near the bus station on Broadway Avenue on July 21, 2012, during Bagelfest in Mattoon.

Ken Trevarthan, Journal Gazette/Times-Courier‌

28th Run for the Bagel set Saturday ROB STROUD

JG-TC Staff Writer‌

‌MATTOON — The Mattoon Area Family YMCA’s 28th Run for the Bagel is scheduled for 7 a.m. Saturday, offering 1-mile, 5-kilometer, and 10-kilometer routes. Angie Patrick, membership and marketing director for the Y, said the 5- and 10-kilometer routes will once again take participants along Western Avenue and other tree-shaded streets, as well as Lytle Park. “The Run for the Bagel is at 7 a.m., so it is before the heat of the day,” Patrick said. “We offer the run in the morning and on a shaded path to be more comfortable for a mid-summer race.” Patrick said the run, as always, is scheduled to conclude in time for participants to watch the 10:30 a.m. Bagelfest parade, which travels east on Western and Broadway avenues to Peterson Park. She said the connection to Bagelfest’s festivities helps the run draw local and out-of-town participants. “Every year, the race grows a little bit more,” Patrick said. She added that the Run for the Bagel has become a multigenerational activity for many families, with four generations running together in

one recent instance. Patrick said organizers have fine-tuned this year’s Run for the Bagel by combining the previously separate 5-kilometer run and walk events into a single event, and by making the 1-mile run/walk a timed event like the other events. The 1-mile, 5-kilometer, and 10-kilometer routes will each start on Broadway Avenue, between 19th and 21st streets, and conclude at the YMCA, 221 N. 16th St. Route maps are available at http:// mattoonymca.org/2015/run-for-thebagel-2015/. Water stations will be posted along the routes. Participants can register in advance at www.getmeregistered.com/runforthebagel or by calling the YMCA at 217-234-9494. The registration fee for the 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer events is $22 per participant, and the fee for the 1-mile event is $10. Race day registration will increase $5 in all categories and will be held from 6 to 6:30 a.m. All race fees this year include a T-shirt while supplies last. A brief awards ceremony will be held inside the YMCA after the races.

40 to compete in Miss Bagelfest pageant ‌MATTOON — “Celebrate Good Times, C’mon!” is the theme of this year’s 30th anniversary of Bagelfest festivities, along with the anniversary milestone itself. The Miss Bagelfest pageant, which is featuring 40 contestants vying for the crown of Little Miss, Junior Miss and Miss Teen Bagelfest competitions, has put the 30-year celebration theme into action. The competition involves girls competing in the following categories: Interviews, Gowns, and a Question and Answer session. In addition, those participating in the Miss Bagelfest (teen) competition will present speeches. The 13 contestants in this competition must incorporate the number 30 into their chosen

presentations. Heather Fitt, pageant director, said the participants have used their creativity and are offering a broad spectrum of topics. One of the girls will be talking about when she becomes 30 years of age, while another has decided to talk about 30-degree weather in Illinois. Another has chosen a speech on what she expects in 30 months from now when she is of the age to enroll in the Army. Another is focusing on how talking with someone for 30 minutes could change your life. Each competition will have a queen and a first runner-up. Three judges will preside over PAGEANT/11

Miss Teen Bagelfest Amanda Cavazos is crowned July 16, 2013, during the Miss Bagelfest Pageant at Williams Elementary School in Mattoon.

WHY BUY A CERTIFIED VEHICLE?

PAGEANT From 10

Most of the judges are from the southern region, Fitt said. The Miss Bagelfest category will also award a Miss Congeniality. The contestants vote for one of their peers for this honor. The reigning 2014 Bagelfest pageant queens are Chiondra McWhorter; Hadley Laster, Junior Miss; and Mikala Couch, Miss Bagelfest (teen). The duties of Miss Bagelfest winners are to reign over the rest of Bagelfest festivities, which involves introducing themselves on stage each night. They are also expected to attend all the local parades. Pageant winners also attend other county pageants and parades, Fitt said. The pageant will be held at 7 p.m. today at Arland D. Williams school.

PARADING IN MATTOON

HANGING TOUGH

Bagels a part of eating healthy, even in a hurry MAYO CLINIC NEWS NETWORK Sioux City Journal‌

‌Most Americans have experienced the rush of daily living with demands from work, school or family obligations. Eating healthy can sometimes take a backseat to more pressing matters. “Although it may seem nearly impossible to make healthy choices when you’re so busy,” says Grace Fjeldberg, Mayo Clinic Health System registered dietitian and nutritionist, “there are tips and tricks that will make mealtime easier and save you time in the long run. It all starts in the pantry.” To save yourself time, always have the essentials stocked in your pantry and refrigerator to decrease “emergency” grocery store trips. Always keep fruits and veggies available in any form, such as fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced. When the fresh food is gone, canned or frozen options can help fill the gaps. Also, canned and frozen options are sometimes more convenient as they are already washed and cut. Think convenience — in some instances you may want to consider purchasing pre-cut fresh veggies or fruit to save time. Fjeldberg recommends having these foods available in the house for healthy meals or snacks: Whole grains: rice blends, pastas, tortillas, breakfast cereals, crackers, English muffins or mini bagels, and breads/wraps. Proteins: low-fat refried beans or other canned beans, water-packed tuna, lean pork, pre-cut lean beef, tofu, fish and poultry. Even consider

pre-cooked meats and lowsodium, low-fat lunch meats. Dairy: Low-fat yogurts and cottage cheese (these often come in single-serve portions, which make it easy to grab-’ngo), low-fat string cheese, preshredded cheese, and fat-free or 1 percent milk. Other foods: Single-serve popcorn bags, whole-grain pretzels, hummus, single-serve

peanut butter or low-fat dressing packets, single-serve dried fruit or nut packets and wholegrain granola bars. Also, keep pasta or pizza sauces in the pantry to add to your favorite whole-grain wrap or English muffin for a quick pizza.

So, you have all this wonderful wholesome food in your house, but now what do you do with it? The first step in saving time is prepping some of your grocery store goodies, Fjeldberg says. Once you get unpacked from your shopping trip, wash and prep fresh fruits or veggies you’ve purchased. By doing all of this chopping at one time, you’ll save time later in the week and do fewer dishes. While washing and prepping fruits and veggies, heat up the stove to boil some of those whole grains you packed away in the pantry. Many whole grains take at least 30-60 minutes to cook. By cooking grains in advance, you can reheat them later in the week or add them to a cold salad. You can also pre-cook many meats to reheat later in the week. Now that you have everything prepped, the fun part begins — planning. Most people view meal planning as laborintensive and difficult. To avoid getting stressed about having specific meals planned, be creative in what you prepare. Reading recipes and gathering ingredients takes time. For example, if you already have rice and chicken cooked, pull out a frozen vegetable stir fry mix for a quick stir fry. That same chicken you already have cooked from the night before can be mixed with a Greek yogurt dressing and added to a wrap with fresh veggies. The possibilities and ideas for healthy eating are endless, Fjeldberg says. With a small amount of preparation and planning, you can have a fresh, wholesome meal prepared in less time than it takes to order and wait for food at the local drive-thru.
