Timing right for remodeling projects RACHEL RODGERS H&R Staff Writer With spring edging closer and more individuals taking steps to improve their homes in a gradually improving economy, more than 60 businesses plan to exhibit their latest offerings at the Metro Decatur Home Builders Association Home Show. Steering out of the slump homeowners experienced during the recession, they are becoming more inclined to remodel because of the state of the housing market and low interest rates, said Sara Zarndt-Brickey, operations manager of Re-Bath of Illinois/5 Day Kitchens and president-elect of the home builders association. “With the real estate and buyer’s market improving, homeowners are doing more projects that they've been putting off the last
few years, like projects in the kitchen, bathroom or landscaping” she said. Jessica Younghouse, business development specialist at Decatur Earthmover Credit Union, said they have seen an uptick in home improvement loans, as well as individuals refinancing their mortgage. “Interest rates have been getting better, and it's something that's been so appealing for them to be ready to make updates, enjoy your home and increase the resale value while you're at it,” Younghouse said. “A lot of homes need fixing.” The increase for homeowners wanting to remodel has occurred at both the local and national level, said Brad Swartz, owner of J.J. Swartz Co. “People are electing to stay in their houses longer, and the baby
boomers are having work done to make their homes more accessible for the future,” he said. “Home values have gotten to the point where they are more feasible for them to upgrade their homes.” The annual home show will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 14 and continue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 15 at the Mount Zion Convention Center. Coz's Bar and
Grill will have food available for purchase. Zarndt-Brickey said some remodeling trends this year include individuals replacing their bathtubs with showers and leaning more toward muted tones and finishes rather than “glitz and glam.” In addition to displaying new style trends and products, vendors will also showcase new home technology including Swartz, who said they will exhibit new home automation technology. “When you get to the point of being more serious about improving your home, you want to be able to touch and feel the products,” Zarndt-Brickey said. “Each and every vendor, they usually have new products or something special going on so there's something different for people to explore each year.”
