Get Ready!

How to get properly prepared for a job fair By MEREDITH JACKSON For the Herald & Review DECATUR – These days, preparing for a job fair can feel a lot like preparing for battle. Job hunters have to be strategists: they must prepare well, fight to make their best impression during the event, bring the proper gear and use their resources wisely. They must follow through until their mission, so to speak, is complete, and the battle is won. Not to fear! Karen Allen, long-time program manager at Workforce Investment Solutions in Decatur, says all it takes is a simple plan of attack in which preparation is of utmost importance. First and most obvious, job seekers must work on their resume until it is easy to read and error-free. “They should highlight their skills and be prepared to tell an employer how those skills are going to meet those employers’ needs,” said Allen. “And it really must be error-free. A resume gives them a chance to be seen, but if there are any errors in it, it will just go

into the garbage and they won’t get a chance.” For job hunters who have never had to prepare a resume or who are seeking a new career path, Workforce Investment Solutions can help. They offer resume assistance, and their web site, www.illinoisworknet.com , offers a plethora of job search helps, from career choice assessments to interview preparation tips. Job hunters can even perform a search for the perfect job, by type, location or distance, or a combination of those. The WorkNet Center provides a bank of 18 computers for using the web site, completing online applications, working on resumes and more. Along with completing the perfect resume, Allen says, part of preparing for a job fair includes researching any employers a job hunter may contact there. “They need to know who the employer is and what they do,” said Allen. “They need to know why they’d like to work there and be prepared to answer recruiters’ questions.

Competition is stiff right now, with fewer jobs out there and more people looking for jobs. A lot of people have been looking for a while now, and the one thing I think they need to do is be prepared.” Allen says that she often sees job seekers who are unwilling to take a lower-paying job to get their foot in the door. But because of a limited number of jobs, taking one when it’s offered means less time on unemployment—the less time the better, to most employers— and in a couple of years, they may be earning what they hoped to initially, with the added benefit of more experience. Another means of preparation can come from a perhaps untapped source for many. While most serious job hunters are familiar with monster.com and linkedin.com, two major networking sites for the career-minded, they may not consider how a social web site such as Facebook can help or hinder a job search. “They can connect not only with

friends and family but also with potential employers,” said Allen. “And that can be either harmful or beneficial in a job search. I don’t know if people consider that information shared with their best friend can be shared with the whole world. Be aware of the image you are projecting on the web. I’ve heard of situations where people have lost jobs or promotions because of something they have posted online.” But for those job hunters whose Facebook profile is squeaky clean, the site can be a great tool for what is still the number one way to land a job: networking. Whether face-to-face or wall-to-wall, Allen says that making the right connection can materialize into a job. Allen also suggests that candidates prepare and practice what she calls an elevator speech, a brief introduction highlighting who they are, what they do and what skills they have. Once they are prepared to sell themselves, they should also consider what to ask prospective employers. Topics not to discuss would include salary or vacation time, for example, but it would be perfectly fine to ask about a typical day on the job, expectations for a qualified candidate or the next steps to take following the job fair. “Ask about how you can meet the employer’s needs, not how they can meet your needs,” said Allen.

But as every soldier knows, the best preparation in the world won’t help if you don’t have the right gear. For a job hunter, that includes plenty of copies of his or her resume, a pen and pad of paper for notes, the right clothes and confidence. Though it may sound harsh, children should not come along. “In my opinion, many people don’t take a job fair perhaps as seriously as they could or should,” she said. “They should make sure to leave their children at home, get a sitter or trade off. If you and your friend are both looking for a job, you can keep each other’s kids for a couple of hours. As well, they should dress for success, and be clean and neat. You can never make a second first impression.” After the career fair, the battle’s not over. Allen says that is the time to follow up your great first impression with a thank-you note, expressing your appreciation for the recruiter’s time and attention. “Be persistent and be positive,” said Allen. “Remember, a positive attitude will get you a long way, even in these difficult times.” It may even lead to victory—a great new job. hrprojects@herald-review.com

High expectations Caterpillar is looking for motivated workers

By COURTNEY WESTLAKE For the Herald & Review DECATUR – Though it is often difficult to track specific numbers, Caterpillar has had “moderate success” finding qualified and competent applicants at regional job fairs. And so the company has decided to seek out local applicants once again at the upcoming community job fair sponsored by the Herald & Review. Currently, Caterpillar is looking to hire machinists, welders, assemblers and painters, said Sarah Turner, communications representative for the Integrated Manufacturing Operations Division at CAT. “We’re hiring for numerous positions within those job classifications,” she said. “We’re looking to hire around 100 by the end of the year.” The company has discovered that it can be difficult to find skilled, qualified machinists and welders, Turner said. They often have more luck with

assemblers. “Assemblers do not require the skill set and are easier to find,” she said. Working for Caterpillar has many advantages and benefits, Turner noted. A career with the company can mean working for an industry leader that “enables progress, drives development and paves the way for positive and sustainable growth in communities around the globe.” “It’s a value-based culture with a wealth of opportunities here,” Turner said. “It’s a very caring company, which cares about its employees and cares about the community.” Caterpillar has high expectations for those who are looking to join the company and expects that job applicants have many positive qualities that they will bring to a new role at CAT. Turner encouraged such applicants to apply for positions they are interested in online at jointeamcaterpillar.com “Be eager and motivated,” she advised.

A thirst for knowledge A career in education may be the job for you

By COURTNEY WESTLAKE For the Herald & Review DECATUR – Often when a person experiences a job loss, becoming a teacher is one field they explore. “When we have an informational meeting on becoming a teaching assistant, we’ve had a number of people who may have been let go and say ‘I always thought I might like to be a teacher and now I have the opportunity to check in a little further’,” said Marcia Uchtorff, assistant to the director of human resources for the Decatur Public School District No. 61. While the Decatur Public Schools have seen more applicants during recent school years, the system is continually hiring for many positions, including teachers, teaching assistants, custodians, maintenance crew members and crossing guards, Uchtorff said. “We’re also hiring for substitute teachers and substitute teaching assistants, as well as substitute office personnel,” she said. Working in the school system allows an employee access to great employee benefits and often a flexible schedule,

Uchtorff said. Full-time and part-time positions are available. “We get people who are parents and looking for a job with the same hours that their children are in school, and we do have some jobs available like that – mostly teaching assistants,” she said. “Substitute teachers are on-call, so we call if we need them, and a lot of times, people like that flexibility.” Because substitute teaching has such flexibility, the school system is interested in adding more substitute teachers to their staff to fill any need for subs should it arise. Anyone interested in joining the staff of the Decatur Public Schools should go online at www.dps61.org to review the available openings and apply online. The Decatur Public Schools is seeking out qualified candidates who have a positive work ethic and are “willing and eager to work hard and work with our students and other staff members,” Uchtorff said. hrprojects@herald-review.com

Keep on Truckin’

Marvin Keller Trucking continues to roll By PHIL JACOBS For the Herald & Review Sullivan—When Joe Keller, 43, left Western Illinois University in 1990 with an MBA and a minor in logistics, it had not yet occurred to him that he might one day use his education to manage a trucking business. During the following decade, Joe married, started a family and set out on a career path that took him to various cities throughout the Midwest, including a four year stint with the Honeywell Corporation in Kansas City. Then, in 1999, during a telephone conversation with his father, Marvin, who had been working 80 hours a week for the last 30 years managing the Marvin Keller Trucking Company, Joe Keller decided to move his family back to Sullivan to take over the family business. Joe still recalls his first day on the job.

“Dad basically showed me around the office and with a wave of his hand on his way out the front door, said, ‘If you need any help, let me know.’ Dad was in and out of the office frequently over the next couple of years to insure a smooth transition but it was clear that he wanted less to do with the business and more to do with his grandchildren.” The first thing on the agenda for the new CEO was the recruitment of his brotherin-law, Rick Ellis, who had been operations manager for American Freightways. Together they set about modernizing the business, adding GPS technology, new dispatching software and moving from paper to digital logs, all while working hard to successfully expand the company. What had been a 10truck operation with essentially one client in the fall of 2000, has since grown to a fleet of 80 trucks that now traverse all of the states east of the Mississippi River.

The company has come a long way since 1965 when Marvin Keller bought a cab-over Peterbilt with a 40-foot box trailer. That purchase officially launched Marvin Keller Truckling Co., Inc. His main client in those days was Wagner Castings which later became Intermet.

“There’s no secret . . . Our drivers are the key to our success.” “Dad grew up on a watermelon farm in Indiana where as a teenager he and his brother hauled the home-grown produce to markets in Detroit and Chicago,” Joe explained. “Along the way, he worked at other jobs including a ten-year

stint as an owner-operator for the Brada-Miller Trucking Co. of Decatur. “When the government deregulated the trucking industry in 1982, B&M filed for bankruptcy which allowed my father to obtain his own authority and start his own business, under his own name. Prior to deregulation, about the only way to acquire authority to operate a hauling business was to buy a trucking company that had the authority you needed.” In recent years, the trucking business has experienced a shortage of good drivers and not enough trucks. When that market collapsed and banks begin to fail last year, the trucking industry suffered, too, according to industry sources. “About all I can say about last year is that we survived,” Joe said. “As a result of our worst year ever, we have begun to focus on sustainability, choosing clients, for example, that are here for the long run, like paint and food grade

commodities, vendors who can weather these periodic economic slumps. The present economy is still in a mess and it’s going to take time to heal.” Looking to the future, Keller said he foresees a time in the next five years when trucks that now run on diesel fuel, will instead be fueled with natural gas. “It’s cheaper and it’s American and it will help reduce our costs,” he said. “Additionally the change will help us break our dependence on foreign oil.” As a final thought, Keller said the success of the company really rests with the quality of its drivers. “There’s no secret,” Keller said, “Our drivers are the key to our success. They are reliable, safe, take care of the equipment and our customers, and it is precisely these qualities that keep us competitive.” pjacobs837@yahoo.com

No limits

ADM has jobs to take you around the world By COURTNEY WESTLAKE For the Herald & Review DECATUR – For those looking for a new job with few limits on where you might end up, Archer Daniels Midland Company is hiring for positions locally, nationally and internationally. “We have positions in Decatur and all over the United States; we also hire overseas,” said Sandy Dunn, talent acquisitions specialist for ADM. Dunn said that ADM will be attending the Herald & Review’s job fair both to be a presence in the community and also to seek out qualified candidates for open positions. According to the online job board at www.adm.com, ADM currently has openings for positions in fields such as accountancy, information technology, engineering and more. Other openings on the job board include administrative assistant, compliance specialist, foreign exchange analyst and claims adjuster, among many others. “We have quite a few positions open; we have hourly to salaried positions open,” Dunn said, adding that ADM is hiring for all levels of jobs, from working in the plants to the corporate office. ADM offers a positive working environment with many opportunities, Dunn said.

“I believe they treat their employees really well,” she said. “We have good benefits, and ADM does a lot of nice things for the employees and their families. It’s a good place to work.” Dunn advised job seekers attending a job fair to be professional and polite when speaking with a potential employer. Experience is always a plus for potential employers to see, but ADM has many entry-level positions open as well, and the company is interested in professionalism from all applicants, Dunn said. “You want to put your best foot forward and make the best impression you can because that’s the first impression your employer is going to see,” she said. It’s always important to make a good impression when job hunting, but especially during tough economic times when landing a job is much more competitive due to the amount of applicants. “We’re seeing a lot of candidates come through because of the economy,” Dunn said. “We’re seeing a huge number of candidates for our positions.” hrprojects@herald-review.com
