You Picked a Great Place To Relax ax By JIM VANORE Welcome to Cape May County; hope you brought your bathing suit. Of course, even if you didn’t, there’s more than the Atlantic to keep you occupied. People who have never visited the Jersey cape can’t understand why we’re called the Garden State. The motion picture industry — and its obnoxious cousin, TV — have led people to believe that ‘Jersey’ is just the place people go home to after working all day in New York City. But this is not the sprawling, gardenless industrial zone that houses pharmaceutical companies and megastore distribution warehouses; this is Cape May County — that pastoral and peaceful

escape at the southern tip of our state. And a little more. So if you’re looking for our usual offerings (sun, surf, sand), they’re here. But you forgot your bathing suit, right? We’ll help you find other ways to relax and enjoy the warm days and cool nights with or without the kids. Here you are surrounded by water, but also by nature, nightlife, culture, history, and yes, even adventure. (Have you ridden the ‘Great White,’ the wooden roller coaster on Adventure Pier?) The people of Cape May County welcome you to their home, and invite you to make it yours for as long as you stay. We at the Herald do our part by making sure you know exactly what this green and sandy peninsula has for you,

and where to find it. You’re already getting into the proper frame of mind by reading our 2011 Family Fun Guide. Keep it with you. All through the year! Discover Cape May County’s Hidden Treasure Woodbine is located in the northern part of Cape May County, bordered by Dennis Township on three sides and Upper Township on its northern border. No major county route goes through this small borough — neither Route 9 nor Route 47 — yet it is located just a few miles from each of these highways. This quiet hamlet is adjacent to the more than 40,000 acres of Belleplain State Forrest. With its two lakes, miles of paved back roads and wooded trails, it’s a haven for bicyclists, bird watchers, and nature lovers. With its three campgrounds, Woodbine is also a popular vacation spot for out-oftowners. All this, and it is only 10 minutes from the beaches of Sea Isle City. Woodbine is proud of its rich heritage and diverse population. The town has everything you need: convenience stores,

p h a r m a c y, p o s t o ff i c e , restaurants, custard, and tavern. It also boasts of a bowling alley, airport, and the Sam Azeez Museum, located in the former synagogue built

Laguna Makes it Interesting and Challenging Laguna Oaks is a 10-hole masterpiece, and may be the most challenging and beautiful Par-3 course you will ever play. Laguna Oaks Par offers the “Golden Golf” scoring system. This innovative new approach to tee locations varies slightly, but the big difference is the par rating. For instance, the 180-yard Par-3 (not an easy shot on any course) becomes a Par-5 for the high handicap player. It also offers a 170 yard and a 165 yard Par -3 when playing from “The “Low Handicap” Blue Tees. These two holes are also listed as Par-5s when you are playing the Golden System.

These long Par-3s become Golden Golf Par-5s and do not threaten golfers who can’t reach the green in one shot. If they get on the green in three shots and then “2-putt,” they have achieved a par by these new standards. Back-to-back Golden Pennants are the symbols used to designate the targets between tees and green.

The mid-range holes range from 124 to 150 yards. These become Par-4s for the Golden Golf system. There are two Golden short holes that remain Par-3s, No. 16 (67 yards) and No. 18 (61 yards). But to keep the challenge interesting, these two short holes are both over water — Hole 16 to an island green and Hole 18 to a peninsula.

Discover Woodbine! Centrally located within Cape May County, close to the beach and all attractions, surrounded by pristine hiking and biking trails, Woodbine makes the perfect base for your vacation. Whether you are looking for shopping, dining, cultural or recreational opportunities, Woodbine has it all!

Naval Air Station Wildwood Honors Airmen ERMA — Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum provides fun for the entire family by offering visitors a great opportunity to learn about aviation history through a “hands on” approach. Exhibits, displays and aircraft are specially designed and located to encourage a truly interactive experience. This is not the conventional, silent museum with which you may be familiar. Bring the kids and the camera and travel back in time to a 92,000 square foot sampling of the 1940s. NASW Aviation Museum is located at the Cape May Airport inside historic Hangar #1. The hangar and the museum’s centerpiece, a TBM Avenger aircraft, are listed on the National and State register of historic places. Forty-two men lost their lives while training at NAS Wildwood during World War II. NASW Aviation Museum

is an example of the Navy’s World War II era “standard wood hangar” constructed during the massive military buildup prior to and during World War II. The all wood, double wide hangar was one of six divebombing training facilities in the United States from mid1943 to January, 1945. The defining architectural feature of the hangar is the open wood truss construction used to expedite building time as well as conserve steel during the war years. Upon entering this historic structure, guests are in awe of the extensive span of the roof system and giant overhead sliding track doors. In an ongoing effort, great care has been given to restore the hangar to its original 1942 condition. The museum’s collection of aircraft demonstrates the advancements in aviation technology over the decades since World War II.

Family Activities all Summer Long at Historic Cold Spring Village Beginning on June 21, Historic Cold Spring Village will begin its 30th anniversary season with a Tuesday through Sunday schedule. In addition to featuring its historic buildings, which house interpreters demonstrating the trades and crafts from the 1800s, HCSV also opens the Cape May Point Jail, c. 1812, better known as the Family Activity Area. Here, children can participate in 19th c. dressup, traditional games such as ‘hoops’ and ‘graces’, and also make a take-home craft of the day. Featured crafts include skills taught in the Village, such as tin punch designs, cedar tiles, or corn husk dolls. Fun and educational activities for children are featured Tuesday through Friday from June 21 to September 2, with featured events every weekend until mid-September. Historic Cold Spring Village

New Jewelry Collection Compliments Original Celebrate the sand, fun at the shore, the spirit of days at the beach and nights at the boardwalk. New for the summer of 2011 at M.S. Brown Jewelers is the Wildwoods Memories and Destinations Beads collection. This new selection compliments the original Wildwood Destination Jewelry. The Day Dreamer collection features three designs unique as the vacation memories created in North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and Wildwood. The NW charm’s description card states North Wildwood was originally known as the Borough of Anglesea, a small fishing village. A center point of the days past was the Hereford Lighthouse, originally constructed in 1874 to guide vessels through the Hereford Inlet. This unique location combines a picturesque

setting with all the charm of an oceanfront city. During the day, North Wildwood provides a quaint atmosphere and relaxing fun in the sun. But come nightfall, the city boasts a varied nightlife, created by the plentiful restaurants and bars. Pamela VanMeter wrote the description cards about the Day Dreamer collection WC and W charms. The Borough of Wildwood Crest is a small shore resort community located at the end of Five mile beach in Southern New Jersey. With magnificent free beaches that are among the most beautiful in the world. Wildwood Crest is known as a quiet, relaxed family resort. From Sunset Lake on

the west side to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Wildwood Crest is a vacation memory that will last forever. The City of Wildwood is known for its boardwalk, beaches, entertainment, and nightlife. The 1950s brought rock and roll and the DooWop era along with the neon lights of the boardwalk and the plastic palm trees of the motels.

Wildwood is “the shore” to light up your vacation memories. Now you can collect all three vacation memories, and you can see this beautiful jewelry displayed in their ad in this magazine. M.S. Brown Jewelers was established in 1950 in downtown Wildwood; today they continue their tradition of offering the best of quality, service, and price in both their Wildwood and Cape May Court House locations. Stop in to either location and see their Wildwoods Memories and Destinations Beads in person.

View Avalon’s Fascinating Past AVALON — The public is welcome at the Avalon Free Public Library History Center, 215 39th St., formerly the Avalon Museum. The History Center serves as an informational and cultural gateway to Avalon for all residents and visitors. The center ’s visitors will explore Avalon’s past, present, and future in visually exciting, intellectually accessible, and emotionally evocative new exhibits and public programs. Also in the making are a circulating book collection, computer workstations, and patron access to Geneology. com. The Mission The History Center is an educational institution that serves to engage and inspire a large and diverse audience with links to the past, understanding in the present, and guidance for the future by preserving regional history and presenting the American experience with a southern New Jersey influence, particularly Avalon. This work is accomplished in partnership with the Avalon Free Library and the Avalon Historical Society through the use of archives, artifact collections, conservation, educational programs, exhibitions, publications, and research. The Avalon Historical Society was formed in 1997 with the intention of

collecting and preserving the history of Avalon. Since that time the Historical Society has engaged the Avalon community and beyond with a variety of programs, exhibits, and artifact collections. Besides the educational programming, that has come in the form of authors, first person historical interpreters, and folk singer/storytellers, the Avalon Historical Society has been a leading civic organization in Avalon. Events like the annual Jean Losch Memorial triathlon, old house tour, and photo contest have become a right of summer passage for the community. The Avalon Free Public Library opened to the public in 2002 after the voters overwhelmingly supported the creation of an independent Avalon Library institution. Since it’s opening, the Library has continued to grow as an education and entertainment center for residents and visitors alike. The Library collection contains 32,539 volumes and circulates over 11,000 items per year. The Library encourages a literate and informed community by providing free and open access to first class collections as well as services and programs that inspire, inform, and enrich our community. Hours of Operation are, Mon-Sat 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday closed.

Fantastic Summer Theatre at Cape May Stage Cape May Stage, South Jersey’s premier Equity theatre company, has a fun-filled and compelling summer of productions on the mainstage, so don’t miss out! The Understudy by Theresa Rebeck, playing June 22 through July 30, runs Tuesdays through Sundays at 8 p.m. When a smug Hollywood action star lands a prestigious role in Franz Kafka’s newly discovered play on Broadway, things couldn’t be better until he meets his understudy. Can a love-sick, charmingly ditzy stage manager prevent a battle royale from developing between the two rival actors? Will the show go on? Spirited and laugh-outloud funny, “The Understudy” places the backstage friction of a frenzied rehearsal center stage with vivacious satire and Kafkaesque theatrics.

Cooperative Gallery on 10/9/11 at - in Cape May at Artists Cooperative Gallery, located in the West End Garage.

Wildlife Habitat Protected in County COURT HOUSE — Welcome to the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge, with office at 24 Kimbles Beach Road. The Refuge was established in January 1989 when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service acquired the Refuge’s first (90-acre) parcel from The Nature Conservancy in June of that year. Since then the Refuge has grown to more than 11,000 acres as the Service continues to buy land. And it is still growing. Ultimately the Refuge will protect over 21,200 acres of precious wildlife habitat in New Jersey’s Cape May Peninsula. Cape May National Wildlife Refuge’s key location in the Atlantic Flyway makes it an important link in the vast nationwide network of National Wildlife Refuges administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. It will ensure availability of important habitat to hundreds of thousands of migratory birds each year as these long-distance flyers travel along the New Jersey coast. Because of its importance to migratory waterfowl, Cape May National Wildlife Refuge has been designated a Flagship Project of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan: a farreaching international agreement to conserve and restore millions of acres of wetland habitats throughout the United States Canada and Mexico.

Morey’s Piers Souper Sunday Closing Day Celebration & Chili Cookoff on 10/9/11 at 11 a.m. in Wildwood Morey’s Piers. Call 522-3900.

This massive project is a partnership of private individuals and businesses, conservation organizations and State and Federal agencies. Because of the Delaware Bay Estuary’s value to migrating shorebirds and wading birds, in 1992 it was designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance — otherwise known as the Ramsar Convention. The refuge is also part of the National System of Marine Protected Areas working to conserve the nation’s vital natural and cultural marine resources. At the local level the Refuge also plays an active role in the longterm protection of a vital multi-agency-administered greenbelt corridor reaching from the Delaware Bay to Great Egg Harbor Bay. The Refuge has three separate Divisions. The Delaware Bay Division is located in Middle Township and extends along five miles of the Delaware Bay, the Great Cedar Swamp Division straddles Dennis and Upper Townships and the Two Mile Beach Unit is at the south end of Wildwood Crest in Lower Township. The 21,200-acre proposed acquisition area contains a wide range of habitats including upland and lowland forests, fields, barrier beach, salt marsh and salt meadows cut through by meandering tidal creeks.

Sam Azeez Museum Recognizes Woodbine Heritage WOODBINE — Did you know the rich history and heritage that belongs to Woodbine? Woodbine is not only a town located in Cape May C o u n t y, S o u t h e r n N e w Jersey, is the home of The Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage, 610 Washington Ave. The museum is an officially designated National Historic Landmark. The Brotherhood magogue, constructed by its members and consecrated in 1896 is the historic building that Oodles the memories and traditions of a community that remains true to the ideals of its founding citizens. Instituted through the philanthropy of the Baron de Hirsh Fund, the community began as an agricultural experiment organized by the Russian Jewish immigrants who arrived in Woodbine in 1891. Who was Sam Azeez? Sam Azeez — achiever, inventor, entrepreneur — was a very special man.

Growing up in Woodbine during the Depression filled Sidney “Sam” Azeez with a burning desire to achieve. He became an entrepreneur at the age of 12 with his very own bicycle shop. He went on to graduate college with a degree in electrical engineering and soon blazed a trail of unique accomplishments. Through his company, Ultronics, Azeez co-developed the world’s first real-time computer quotation system, revolutionizing stock markets around the globe. He redirected his energy towards banking, real estate and venture capital investments. Azeez was one of the true pioneers in Internet and cellular telephone communications, where he helped build the first regionalized mobile telephone network in the United States. The museum is named in his honor and memory, in recognition of his Woodbine roots and the impact the community had on his life. What was it like to live here back then?

Not everyone was Orthodox, observant or even Jewish, but for years, this town lived the rhythm of the Jewish week. Shops were closed on Saturday, but open on Sunday. Schools were closed on Jewish holidays. And each Friday night came the most important holiday: Shabbat. Every Jewish family b u s t l e d t o g e t r e a d y. Thursday, the women would buy fish and groceries; get the chicken butchered: and bake honey cake and mondebrat. Friday, they bake challah; make noodles, soup, chicken, gefilte fish and chopped liver; clean the house; bathe and dress up; and bless the candles. Meanwhile the men and boys would leave work early, bathe at the bathhouse and go to services. At sundown, with candles twinkling in every house, families greet the Sabbath with blessings, food and song. Saturday passes quietly, with services and togetherness. And the week begins again. And if you weren’t Jewish? Woodbine was a tolerant community. When non-Jews began to move in, most of the townspeople welcomed them. Still, Jewish ways dominated. Even in the 1930s, when the town own basketball team was as mostly non-Jewish, the players would shout to each other in Yiddish.

The Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage is an independent, non-profit, and tax-exempt public charitable organization. Its mission: The Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage celebrates the history of the wave of immigration at the end of the 19th Century that brought Russian Jewish settlers to the area mown as Woodbine to be developed as an agricultural colony under the auspices of the Baron de Hirsch Fund. Housed in the historical Brotherhood Synagogue, t h e m u s e u m ’s m i s s i o n statement is focused on hate and prejudice reduction and education. Designated as the Cape M a y C o u n t y Te a c h i n g Center for the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, the Museum provides both onsite and iiclassroom programming to students from fifth through 12th grades. Students are encouraged to learn about the past, exchange ideas in the present, and work towards a harmonious future. From its beginning, Woodbine remains as a living example the values and ideals of its founders. The museum is committed to preserving the memory and teaching the history of those hi who created the legacy of Woodbine.

Currently, the Wetlands Institute is a partner in the Coastal Conservation Research Program (CCRP) with Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and is also supported by other public and private donors. a The CCRP focuses its conservation and research efforts on issues created by our close proximity to the dense human population of the northeastern United States. Over the past 20 years, the CCRP has increasingly involved partnerships with Stockton students and faculty. Additionally, college and university students from more than 100 other academic institutions throughout the United States and abroad have participated in our program. The CCRP now annually involves approximately 10 –15 student researchers supervised by research scientists. Landmark Homes Photos Preserved STONE HARBOR — Several years ago the Stone Harbor Museum, 9508 Second Avenue, developed a display of vintage and current photos titled “Then and Now,” showing how families have preserved history by retaining the appearance of original structures while modifying them to enhance the comfort and enjoyment of “The Seashore At Its Best.” “On The Street Where You Live” is an extensive collection, of old and new photos arranged by street, which shows the past and present of our landmark homes and businesses that have been preserved by their owners. Museum volunteers spent many hours reviewing archived photos and finding homes and buildings that still exist. Determining the location of the home usually takes a little detective work. It has been very rewarding when we are able to locate a special gem whose owners have preserved it for many

years. Do you own a home with a rich history? Do you have photos that show the original structure? Please share them with us and add your home to this evergrowing collection. In 2006 we received a grant from the 2006 Board of Chosen Freeholders Arts, History and Cultural Fund Program, to expand and enhance the Stone Harbor M u s e u m ’s O r a l H i s t o r y Program and to update our technology for the recording, editing and display of recorded oral history. This program consists of capturing the oral histories of longtime residents, who experienced the history of the town and the county, on audio and visual DVDs. Now current residents and visitors are able to learn of the history of the town and the county directly from those who experienced it. Come and learn about Stone Harbor’s past from the people who lived it. An audio-video display of

Museum Preserves County’s Rich History S WA I N TO N — T h e Cape May County Museum is located in the CresseHolmes House, 504 Route 9 North — an historic Cape May County building. Arthur Cresse, one of the county’s original settlers, purchased the property on which it stands from the West Jersey Society. His son John built the rear portion of the house in 1704. John Holmes bought the property in 1776 and added to the property until it was almost 400 acres. John Holmes’ son and heir, Robert Morris Holmes, built the front Federal style section of the house in 1830, incorporating the existing 1704 house into the construction. The Cape May County Historical & Genealogical Society purchased the property in 1976 for use as our museum. A visit to the museum will reveal original woodwork, corner posts and beams,

original fireplaces, original floorboards and much more. In addition to the Cresse-Holmes House, the museum also displays part of the collection in the 1780’s Young’s barn and the Townsend Carriage Shed. The museum’s extensive collection depicting centuries of Cape May County history is displayed in the house, barn and shed. From Native American artifacts to Victorian music boxes, our history is all here in the Cape May County Museum. The Museum is free and open to the public. The Alexander Memorial Genealogical Library, also part of the Cresse Holmes Estate, holds a continuously expanding collection of genealogical books, historical records and photographs. Misreported Then; Misremembered Now ERMA — The Forgotten Warriors Museum is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting memorabilia from Vietnam and Korean War veterans, according to its brochure. For many Americans, the war in Vietnam was the defining event of their lives. It was a conflict that divided families and brought violence both to Vietnam and the United States. Whether in uniform or not, everyone who lived through this period had a Vietnam experience. Despite its cultural and military importance, after more than 30 years, there is no national venue dedicated to examining the legacy of the Vietnam War. The time has come to examine and understand one of the most divisive periods in our history, to allow for reflection, resolution, and healing. The Forgotten Warriors Museum currently has over 1000 artifacts, memorabilia and photographic material which are displayed either under glass or in walkthrough areas which allow the visitor to fully appreciate what it was actually like to be “in country” and absorb the era which was Vietnam.

The indoor display features mannequins, photographs, scale models and dioramas, military equipment and much more. The Forgotten Warriors Museum is staffed wholly by volunteers and exists solely on donations What can you do to help? Send a donation; all contributions to the Forgotten Warriors Museum are taxdeductible within the IRS limits specified for a 501(c) (3) organization. It was misreported then, and it is misrermembered now. Rarely have so many people been so wrong about so much. Never have the consequences of their misunderstanding been so tragic.” —President Richard M. Nixon

Senses Bring Passion to your Golf Game Avalon Golf Club, nestled between Ocean City and Wildwood, along the Jersey coast, is an 18-hole championship course that artistically blends various hole personalities to create an experience that dazzles the senses and ignites a true passion for the game of golf. Measuring from 6325 to 4924 yards, Avalon is a Par 71 course that will test all skill levels. At Avalon, players must contend with narrow fairways, an abundance of water, and the most prominent feature

— the wind. Being so close to the shore, the wind might very well come into play on certain days. Remember though, a breeze can be a help or a hindrance, so play smart and savor the moment when the salty air wisps by your face, and an occasional gull flies by. Avalon Golf Club, open daily to the public yearround from dawn to dusk, is the perfect spot at the Jersey Shore for your group to play, golf, dine, and enjoy themselves for the day.
