School Board approves district 2017-1 18 budget The Hazen School Board elected David Strohl to be their president at the September 25 held in the high school library at 6:00 p.m. Davey Williams was elected as the board’s vice-president, and Vickie Skarda was chosen to continue to be the board secretary. Present at the meeting were David Strohl, Vickie Skarda, Freddie Rogers, Richie Ingle, and Sandra Penn. After reorganizing the board, the members approved the new district budget. The beginning balance for 2017-18 was listed as being $1,248,810.67 and expected revenues are predicted to be $2,569,000 from local tax revenue and other local revenues, just $3000 short of last year’s

actual local revenues last year. State foundation funds are expected to be $196,756,000, down from $215,781.46 in 2016-17. The district expects $2,380,598.00 in student growth money, a little less than last year, but the district will not be receiving the $18,277 in declining enrollment money that was given to the district by the state last year. The district expects to receive almost $100,000 less in other state aid and around $1000 more unrestricted federal aid is expected. The total revenues reported by the superintendent for this school year will be $5,167,620, just shy of last year’s $5,309,497.68 by $141,877. Major expenditures for

New Princess Rice pageant for 2017 Time for an update to the Princess Rice Pageant For forty years the Princess that reigns over the fall Hazen Rice Festival has been selected in a beauty pageant. It has been open to girls in all the counties in Arkansas. Year 41 (XLI) brings in a new era. The contest will only be open to Prairie County girls in grades 9-12. The GFWC of Arkansas Ruth Barrett Fox Club of Hazen has sponsored the pageant since the beginning. Due to trend changes in today's society, beauty pageants are slowly disappearing in popularity. The organization decided to update the agenda by doing away

with the beauty pageant and adding a short essay contest. The essay is due on later than October 12, 2017. The winner will be notified and their picture will be printed in the Grand Prairie Herald the following week. The winner will receive a crown, sash, and cash. She will reign the week of the Rice Festival. The writing topic is: "Why is volunteering in your community important?" The one page essay should be submitted by email to JudyFoot@gmail.com no later than Oct. 12th. Please be sure to include your name, age, grade level, address and phone number.

benefits are expected to decrease, but the salaries and benefits of classified staff are expected to increase by around

The firm writes plans for the maintenance of the district’s present buildings and also helps with the planning of short- and long-term goals for the facilities. The cost of the services to the district will be $3000. The board members also approved the superintendent’s recommendation to participate in the Arkansas Public School U n e m p l o y m e n t Compensation Account through the Arkansas School Board Association. They also agreed to allow the school participate in Entergy’s Cool Saver Program. The program will help pay for HVAC maintenance, which will be done by Derden’s Heat and Air. The district cost for the cleaning and maintenance of the school heating and airconditioning units will be $5500, and Entergy will pay $13,150. Crowder said that the district has almost 80 such units to maintain.

Unfortunately, with the ever increasing cost of printing and other business expenses the paper cannot provide longer obits for free. Beginning with the 301st word, the rate will be 10 cents per word to publish. Due to the fact that a majority of obituaries are received from funeral homes, the paper reserves the right to edit unpaid obituaries down to 300 words. Senior Hornets win over Brinkley in 55-0 0 homecoming shutout The Senior Hornets excited the homecoming crowd when they exited the new hornet tunnel carrying American flags. (photo courtesy of Tracy Caviness.) The Hazen Hornets shutout the opposing Brinkley Tigers at the 2017 Hornet Homecoming game Friday. After a short hour-and-a-half game, the final score came to 55-0. In short, Brinkley, having less than fifteen players and one on injured reserve, simply did not have the numbers or organization to contend with Hazen’s first-string offense or defense. They only had one stop, an

interception on the first play, and did not even get a first-down in the first quarter. Hazen, meanwhile, scored 5 touchdowns and 40 points in just 9:15. All were followed with good conversions, and were scored as follows: 1st by Ay’Jon Green, 2nd by Blayne Toll, 3rd by Tarrell Penn, 4th by Green, and 5th by Ford Seidenschwarz. After the first quarter, the Hornets put in the second string offense and

defense the finish out the game. In the second quarter, Austin hill scored Hazen’s sixth touchdown, which was followed by a failed conversion. Up by 46 points to nothing, the mercy rule was enacted for the second half. In the third quarter, Seidenschwarz scored his second touchdown, which was followed by a failed extra-point kick. However, the Hornets did kick a 15-yard field goal in the fourth quarter,

which is quite unusual at Hazen. All these scores added up at the end for a 55-0 win. This victory is the first home win for Hazen since the 2015 playoffs against the Poyen Indians. It also keeps the Hornets undefeated in conference with a 3-0 record. They will attempt to keep their unbeaten status this week as they cross the county line to meet the rival Bison in Carlisle Friday night.

Junior Hornets continue winning streak with win over Brinkley Tigers by Ross Harper The Hazen Junior Hornets got their second conference win of the year Thursday against the Brinkley Tigers. It was a hard-fought win, with the final score coming to 30-22. Hazen, winning the coin toss and electing to receive, played without much success in the beginning of Thursday’s game. The Hornet offense could not quite manage a score, and the defense allowed one touchdown from Brinkley. In the second quarter, though, things started getting better for Hazen’s Junior High. Luke King ran the ball in on a keep, which was followed by a good conversion to put the

School

Hornets up 8-6. The Tigers then answered with a touchdown and conversion of their own to retake the lead 8-14. With ball back, Hazen’s offense drove down the field until Eric Cohen scored their second touchdown. With another good conversion, the Hornets were ahead yet again 16-14. Hazen’s defense then got the job done and stopped the Tigers with a little over a minute left in the half. This time length was all that was needed for another Hornet touchdown, this one again by Cohen. After another 2point, Hazen was up 2414 going into halftime. The third quarter only had one score for the Hornets; a touchdown by

Quincey McAdoo. The following conversion failed, but Hazen extended their lead 30-14. Neither team could score again until the fourth quarter, when things weren’t looking good for both teams. Brinkley, on the 3-yard line, fumbled the football, which was recovered by Mason D’Angelo. The Hornets then lost control of it themselves, fumbling back to the Tigers. Brinkley scored with under three minutes left, and the conversion made it a onescore game 30-22. They attempted an onside kick, which luckily for Hazen was recovered by Austin Duck. The Hornets kept the ball the rest of the game for

He projects that this program will help the district save around $7000. The district recommended, and the board approved, entering into a tuition agreement with the Sunshine School for $38,744 for two students. They also accepted the resignations of Cory Tenison, a special education paraprofessional, and Allen Minton, the maintenance supervisor. Joyce Ingle was hired as a part-time cafeteria substitute. Crowder said that she will also be a substitute bus driver when needed. Elementary Principal Tiffany Glover told the board that her staff would like to rename the elementary library in memory of Beth Rogers. She also told the board that the elementary parent/teacher conference would be held on Tuesday, September 26. High School Principal Clint Williams told the board about the upcoming homecoming festivities, and that 2 FFA students had won ribbons showing rabbits at the Prairie County Fair. Crowder told the board that the district phone system is out of date and that the parts for the system are no longer replaceable. District Technology Specialist Tracy Caviness has suggested replacing the present phone with an internet phone system. He also reminded the board of the opportunity to save money for the dis-

trict by reissuing the school district bonds. He expects that $500,000 could be saved over the first three years is nothing changes in the bond market. Michael McBryde, a representative of Stephens, spoke to

the board this past spring about the reissue, and he has agreed to come back to speak to the board again. The board will meet again on Monday, October 23, at 6 p.m. in the high school library.

1 (A Psalm of David.) Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. 6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed. 7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. 8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. 10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. 13 Like as a father piti-

eth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. 14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. 16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. 17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; 18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. 19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. 20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. 21 Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. 22 Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul. 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. 2 Who

coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: 3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: 4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: 5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever. 6 Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains. 7 At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away. 8 They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them. 9 Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth. 10 He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills. 11 They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst. 12 By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches. 13 He watereth the hills from his chambers: the

earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works. 14 He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; 15 And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. 16 The trees of the LORD are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted; 17 Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house. 18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies. 19 He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. 20 Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. 21 The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God. 22 The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. 23 Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening. 24 O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy

riches. 25 So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. 26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein. 27 These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season. 28 That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good. 29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust. 30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. 31 The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works. 32 He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke. 33 I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. 34 My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD. 35 Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the LORD, O my soul. Praise ye the LORD.
