Local Des Arc volunteers hold clean-up weekend
by Jaime Eans Volunteers from Des Arc High School participated in the City of Des Arc’s annual clean-up and beautification project on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Prairie County Judge, Mike Skarda, brought a crew with a front end loader to remove piles of tree limbs, bricks, and other debris. Scrap metal was removed. Eighteen additional volunteers met at DAHS working from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. freshening, trimming, and mowing the high school campus, its adjoining property, and the Preschool. Mowers included Eddie and Blakely Richards Lawn Service, Jesse Tackett’s Lawn Service, and Superintendent of Des Arc School District, George Kennedy.
Other volunteers weedeated, push mowed, trimmed hedges, weeded grass, and picked up 7 bags of litter on the school grounds. Two Des Arc Band students cleaned and
blew pine tree debris off the Preschool play area. Ben Eans, manager of Tri-County Farmers’ Cooperative in Des Arc, is recycling fifteen bus tires that were taken to Tri-
County by two Des Arc football team players. Greenway of Des Arc donated much appreciated ice cold water. Because we recognize that people are busy and
their weekend time is limited, we greatly appreciate each person who came to help on Saturday. The high school grounds look wonderful that’s to each of you.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will surpass one million total members who have joined the organization since its founding in 1890. The DAR is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. The Grand Prairie DAR Chapter, based in Stuttgart, Arkansas, has welcomed many members since the Chapter began in 1966. Grand Prairie Chapter is excited to join the National Society in celebrating this milestone by spotlighting members of the chapter through the years. Throughout Grand Prairie Chapter’s history, its membership has included many remarkable women from the local community. Dorothy Jones Core of Stuttgart joined Grand Prairie Chapter in 1966. She was THE history/genealogist in Arkansas County for many years. She researched the settlement at Arkansas Post and wrote many articles that were published in the Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin. She traveled extensively doing historical research and wrote several books. Her research collection was placed in the University of Arkansas Library in Fayetteville. Mary Dumond Oliver of Stuttgart joined Grand Prairie Chapter in 1970. She also was known for her research in Arkansas County. Mary served as Vice Regent of the chapter, and she was the aunt of several current Grand Prairie Chapter members. Jo Clair Knoll English of Clarendon joined the Grand Prairie Chapter in 1978, when she was a young wife and mother. She became THE historian/genealogist of Monroe County. She wrote several books and published many historical articles. Much of her research is housed in the Welcome Center in Clarendon. Margaret Lucile Dixon Brown of Clarendon joined Grand Prairie Chapter in 1982. She was a longtime educator in the Clarendon/Holly Grove School System. Dr Allison Denman Holland of
Carlisle, AR 72024
Stuttgart/Little Rock joined the Grand Prairie Chapter in 1975 as a Junior Member and is currently serving as Chapter Regent. Dr. Holland recently retired from her position as Professor at the University of ArkansasLittle Rock. She states that attending monthly meetings was a way to honor her ancestor and to visit with cousins, Lynne Siems and Karen Carnahan, and her Aunt Mary Oliver. Judi Tarter Jones of DeValls Bluff has been an active member since 2013 and currently serves as Recording Secretary for Grand Prairie Chapter. She also served as Corresponding Secretary for Little RockCentennial Chapter. Wanda Freeman Ridge of Helena joined DAR in 1990. Grand Prairie Chapter member Ashli Ahrens currently serves as the Wataseka District as Director. The District includes chapters from Stuttgart, DeWitt, Pine Bluff, Fordyce, Warren, Monticello, and Camden. Vicki became a member on September 5, 2019. She states she wanted to join DAR to honor her Revolutionary War ancestor and to find ways to give back to the community. These are just some of the one million women who have joined DAR since 1890. Each DAR member has a unique story, but all share a passion for historic preservation, education and patriotism and a dedication to her local community. Hazen Junior and Senior Highs announce homecoming courts
State Democratic Chairman Gray speaks at Murry’s by Harvey Joe Sanner Stating that a good time was had by all may be an old claim but that does not make it any less true for those in attendance Thursday evening, September 19, at Murry’s Restaurant in Hazen. The Prairie County Democratic Committee hosted local folks and some out of town guests from Lonoke, Pulaski, White and Woodruff Counties. We were pleased to welcome Michael John Gray who is serving as State Chairman of the Democratic Party of Arkansas as well as Karyn Coleman who is the Executive Director for the state party. Karyn, coincidentally, has roots in Prairie County; she is the daughter of the Mr. and Mrs. James Bradford who were schoolteachers and coaches in the Des Arc School system. Karyn brought her co-worker, Lauren Watkins, with her to meet folks and distribute information about the Democratic Party of Arkansas. Lauren is Finance Director for the state party. We were also pleased to have Carla Fuller from Searcy, AR on hand to introduce herself and to announce her candidacy for election as Circuit Judge in our Judicial District that covers Prairie and White Counties. The position she is seeking has been held for some time by Judge Thomas Hughes who has chosen to retire. We wish Judge Hughes well in his retirement. Chairman Gray was introduced by Harvey Joe Sanner, Prairie County Chairman. Sanner is stepping aside due to a recently passed law that forbids a party committee chair from serving on the
election commission. Former Prairie County Chair, Byrum Kelly, also our County Coroner, will serve as chairman. Chairman Sanner in his parting remarks spoke of the current political climate. Toxic, malignant, harmful and divisive are very common adjectives used to describe our political system these days. He urged those present to continue their support of the Democrat Party because this period will pass one day. He introduced Prairie County Treasurer Tamara Dabney, the Prairie County Circuit/County Clerk Gaylon Hale and Prairie County Coroner Byrum Kelly as public officials who deserve our support because they earn it every day. Sanner also commented that Prairie County Judge, Mike Skarda, County Sheriff Rick Hickman and County Assessor were all elected as Democrats, but as Chairman Gray mentioned, they were not elected solely because they were Democrats; they were elected because the people felt that they could do their jobs for all the people of Prairie County with no regard to their political affiliation. Sanner mentioned the harmony that exists between the offices and complimented the officials present for helping to create cooperation between their respective offices. He was heard to say, “We should thank God that the words, ‘toxic, harmful and divisive’ to describe the federal political climate most certainly does not apply to Prairie County’s government. We are fortunate that voters in Prairie County have rejected the ugly partisanship that only drives wedges between us. We have witnessed some very undesirable practices that has left many very quali-
fied candidates in the dust only to be ousted by lesser qualified persons due to outside influences with unending volumes of dark money that fund campaign attack ads meant to confuse and distract voters.” “Negativity seems to be easier to sell than positivity,” he said. “That is unfortunate. The valid issues and concerns of Democrats such as infrastructure needs, safer schools, better healthcare, higher incomes, lower prescription drug costs are too often ignored.” Chairman Gray explained some of the work the state party is doing around the state while acknowledging that the party has a tough job to elect more Democrats to state and federal offices, but he stressed that the Democratic position on issues is acceptable to most Arkansans when it is explained and they have an understanding of the facts that can be lost in that toxic environment of partisan politics. Chairman Gray and his team are on the road again organizing for the Democratic party more times than Willie Nelson. It was refreshing to hear his message and to know that it was sincere and from the heart. Then, politics was recessed, and the focus turned to tasty food and as always, the enjoyment was universal and nonpartisan with no disagreement heard! It was suggested that we run Chef Stanley Young for President. He and his family crew did a great job for our meeting. The Democratic Committee of Prairie County is grateful for those attending and we extend a welcome to all voters when we meet again.

Letter to the Editor A Eulogy for Crackerjack Rogers October 4, 2019 Many in the Prairie County community were saddened by the news that the beloved Burro Crackerjack, a long-time loyal mascot for the Prairie County Democratic Party passed away September 13, 2019. Kidney failure took him too early at 19 years which is about middle age for his species. He is survived by his parents/caretakers Steve and Shelia Rogers of Des Arc and his Grandmother Lela Mae Rogers. He was preceded in death by his Grandfather the late Don “Chunk” Rogers. Needless to say, the family is heartbroken over this loss. Crackerjack was faithful attendee and crowd pleaser at many political rallies around Prairie County. Crackerjack had star power because even in the company of U.S. Senators, Governors, U.S. Representatives, State and Local Dignitaries Crackerjack was the most sought after by people hoping to pose for photos with the classy little burro. The late Mrs. B.F. Mullen, long time member of the Prairie County Democratic Committee stitched a blanket and a colorful collar worn by Crackerjack when he was dressed up for an event. He had class and an intense liking for vanilla wafers. He also had a sense of timing and he
heard all over town!! We all assumed that he was saying I’ve had enough and it’s time to go! We, the Prairie County Democratic Committee members, wish to thank the Rogers family for sharing Crackerjack over the years and we offer our condolences. Rest in Peace Crackerjack, you brought joy to many in your time here and you will be missed. Submitted by friends of Crackerjack.

Letter to the editor “My tenth grade literacy class was asked to write an article on “Man’s Inhumanity To Man.” I didn’t understand what that meant. We were poor that I knew. Mama always kept hand me down clothes clean and never sent us to school without breakfast We didn’t have meat on the table every meal, but plenty of vegetables from the garden. Even today nothing beats fried potatoes, gravy and biscuits. We never went hungry. My two sisters, brother and I was always surrounded with love and protection. We were Happy. I was never mistreated by classmates because of not being well off. Deloris Tosh

To enter, clip out the entry blank and pick the team you think will win from the games listed in each ad. Write the name of the team in the appropriate blank. If you think the game will end in a tie, write “tie” in the blank. For the 20th game, pick a winner and predict a total number of points scored in the game. Total point predictions will be used as a tie-breaker if two or more entries correctly guess the same number of winners. The entry with the most correct game winner predictions wins the $25 cash prize. If a tie still exists after the total point predictions are judged, the prize money will be divided. 4. Each entry must be filled out completely and legibly to be eligible. 5. Contestants who win will not be eligible for the following week’s contest. 6. Only the person whose name appears on the winning entry may claim the prize unless other arrangements have been made and agreed to by the Herald Publishing Company. 7. All entries become the property of the Herald Publishing Company and will not be returned. 8. The name of the winner of each week’s contest will be announced in the following week’s edition of The Grand Prairie Herald. 9. All decisions of the judges will be final. 10. Only two entries per household will be judged. 11. Occasionally, game schedules are changed after the contest games have been selected. If this week’s line-up does not correspond to the games being played, the game or games in question will be voided and the contest will be judged on the basis of the remaining games.
