HHS Financial Aid Workshop The Hazen High School Financial Aid Workshop, sponsored by Arkansas Student Loan Authority, Phillips Community College and Arkansas Rehabilitation Services will be held on Thursday, November 17 at 6:00 p.m. in Mrs. Caviness’s Science Room. Information will be given on state and federal financial aid programs, including scholarships, loans, Pell and other grants. Representatives will explain the 2017-18 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) which is required for any type of financial aid

tain state highways. However, our county officials and a several concerned citizens have been in contact with State Representative David Hillman, State Senator Jonathan Dismang, the District Engineer with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department and members of the Arkansas Highway Commission regularly for some time about the horrible and dangerous condition of State Highway 323. The republican spokesman assailed all nine justices by once again accusing them of negligence due to his lack of knowledge about the progress being made to convert the Presbyterian Church facility into a county library. No county funds have been expended on the project; the work completed thus far has been financed with contributions and grant funds. Monies from the sale of the old library property are in an account managed by the Prairie County Treasurer. Local tradesmen who are

expert in heating and air conditioning, electrical engineering and plumbing are donating their talents and labor and we should all be grateful to them as well as considerate and understanding enough to realize that these professionals have businesses to operate and they must fit their volunteer work into very busy schedules. Whining and creating negative gossip instead of being supportive of this worthwhile project seems to be a pattern for the party spokeman. Evidently the republican spokesman doesn’t know these 8 men and one lady who make up the Prairie County Quorum Court or you would not accuse them of being timid or afraid to ask “tough questions.” It’s obvious that some one is feeding the spokesman bad information or he is relying on petty gossip and unfounded suspicions to form his rather outlandish opinions. He is also wrong to attack county officials and quorum court mem-

including the Arkansas Challenge Scholarship. This workshop is open to juniors, seniors and their parents. The 2017-18 FAFSA will be used for students attending college/technical school in Fall 2017/Spring 2018. The application opened October 1 this year and should be completed using 2015 tax information. For more information, contact Scarlett Golleher, Counselor at 870-255-4546 (ext. 2), sgolleher@hazen.k12.ar.us or on Facebook at Hazen High School Counseling.

Letter to the Editor In last week’s White River Journal, the Prairie County Republican Party presented some untrue information about the Prairie County Quorum Court and County Officials. Accusations by the Republican Party claiming that a county official purchased a ($40,000.00 + vehicle) without prior approval is false. Records of the Quorum Court Meeting Minutes are available to the public in the Clerk’s office and there are no instances of a county official buying vehicles without approval. The republican spokesperson, then impugned the reputation of all nine member of the Quorum Court with baseless accusations of negligence. Justice Eans, Justice Holloway, Justice Roe, Justice Tipton, Justice Sims, Justice Ciganek, Justice Sterling, Justice Willeford and Justice Sullins all stand accused of ignoring the need for repairs on State Highway 323. As the kids would say DUH!! The county doesn’t main-

sisters, Diane (Joe) Ray and Patricia (Simon) Khamou A family gathering will be Friday November 4 at the funeral home from 57 p.m. Memorial service will be Saturday, November 5, 2 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, Carlisle, Pastors Bill Ricks, Thomas Whittaker and Woody Evans officiating.

bers in an effort to turn our county government into a partisan spit fight that will be very detrimental to our future. The current Court is made up of one republican member and eight democrats but party affiliation has not been an issue. Doing their jobs representing their communities and the county, as a whole must not be hindered by political affiliations. Politics should never raise its ugly head when the business of the county is being tended to. This divisive and untrue accusations are a sure fire way to expose our county to senseless partisanship and gridlock like we have endured at the national level for several years. Enough of this, we need unity and an atmosphere that fosters cooperation instead of being overly concerned with party politics. Paid for by the Committee to elect Ronnie Eans and Lawrence Holloway, two bi-partisan J.P.s.

New Bethel News By Donna Kelly We had a good service at Church Sunday. We were sorry to hear of the death of Tommy Martin. He will be missed in our church. We had some work done last week, such as a new roof on our out building. I had a call from CHarles Ingle. He was

better, still having problems with Bronchitis or whatever. Our grand children came over on Halloween trick or treating. They were having fun. Speaking of repairs we had it, it was a small thing. We have several new families in our neighborhood. It has

been a transformation. Everyone remolding or repairing houses. There is alot of work going on here. We are trying to get the time change worked out. John and I are doing better. We are thankful

Senior High Hornets Headed to Play-O Offs

The Hazen Hornets are playoff-bound after their huge victory against the Pa l e s t i n e - W h e a t l e y Patriots Thursday. This 44-6 win gives them just enough to continue into the post-season. Although it appeared bleak at several moments, Hazen has indeed made it to the playoffs this year. Perhaps the best game the Hornets have had all year was played Thursday. Knowing they needed a win to continue, they began the first

quarter by driving the ball deep into Patriot territory. Eventually, Michael Pargo was able to run for nine yards and the first of many Hornet touchdowns. After the no-good conversion, Hazen was up 6-0 fairly early in the quarter. The first PW drive ended as Terrell Penn took the handoff from their quarterback and ran to the 5-yard line. He was then given the ball again, this time on offense, and scored the second touchdown of the night. With a good conversion, the

Hornets were up 14-0 with a couple of minutes left in the first. Although the Patriots managed to hand the ball off to only their own players this drive, they still failed to find the end-zone. Now it is Junior Minor's turn to score from a pass by Blayne Toll for a total of 60 yards into the endzone. A good conversion and Hazen was up 22-0. Neither team managed to score again for the remained of this first half. In the third quarter, as the Patriots got ball first,

they managed to run the kickoff in for a touchdown for their only score of the game. After the failed conversion, they were on the board 22-6. A series of fumbles, a punt, and an interception by Quinton Bonds create a rapid back-and-forth between the two teams. Finally, the Hornets got going again as Pargo ran 21 yards into the endzone for his second touchdown of the night. Another good conversion and PW is down 30-6. The Patriots continued to

be denied for the remainder of the quarter. In the fourth, Penn quickly ran for ten yards and his second touchdown for this game. With a good 2-point try, Hazen extended its lead at 38-6. After again stopping the PW offense, the Hornet offense set up Penn to run for 14 yards and his third and final touchdown of the night. The failed conversion put Hazen up 44-6 with a few minutes remaining. As the secondstring players finished out the game

for the Hornets, time expired and Hazen was going to the playoffs. This win could not have been more critical for Hazen's playoff dreams this year. With the regular season now over, the Hornets will play on a "sink or swim" basis from now on. They hope to achieve the latter this Friday as they travel to Hampton to play the Bulldogs.

and reach people who want the newspaper with your message in it and are willing to pay for it. They are the people most likely to come and buy items from your business, or garage sale, yard sale or charity auction - the people who live and work in this area. Consider it an investment in success. And if you’re giving something away or trying to return something that has been lost, the ad is free. Or you can try to reach those people with a “free” classified ad in a “shopper” published and circulated in another county, miles from here. That way, your message will sit in the drive ways of thousands of people who don’t want it, until it gets wet and turns into papier mache, or the neighbor’s dog runs off with it, or the home owner finally picks it up and throws it away without ever looking at it.

Think about it. Which is really the better deal?
