Runners from the Grand Prairie raised over $3300 for St. Jude’s Hospital in the 16th Annual St. Jude Memphis Marathon held on Saturday, December 2. More than 25,000 people from 49 states and 19 countries participated in the race which is the largest single-day fundraising event for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The Hazen Public Library held their annual Christmas Open House on Thursday, December 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Punch, finger foods, and gifts were provided for visitors. The winners of the door prizes were Wesley Oliver, Danielle Kerr, Shirley Pfleger, and Dell Hill. The library staff would like to thank everyone who attended.

The American Red Cross will make their regular visit to the Hazen United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at 295 North Hazen Drive on Monday, December 18, 2017 for the community Blood Drive. The time will be from 2 pm to 6 pm. It is an opportunity for you to give the gift of life, whether it is a transfusion for a cancer patient, someone facing surgery or the victim of an accident. It is important to remember there is always a need. To be a donor, you must be at least 16 years or older, weight at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Also, those who

are 16 years of age must have signed parental consent form. Forms will be available at the Hazen United Methodist Church. If you are taking antibiotics for an infection you are exempt. Most other medications are acceptable if they are taken to control a problem. Person who have been cancer free for five years will be accepted. A donor card or a photo ID, are required. Donating blood is quick, easy and may help as many as four patients. Please mark your calendar on December 18, 2017 for an opportunity to make a difference for those in need.

The 1967 DeValls Bluff graduating class held their 50th reunion at the First United Methodist Church fellowship hall in DeValls Bluff on Saturday, December 2. The fellowship hall was decorated with a Christmas theme using all purple and gold decorations. The 7.5 foot tree not only had purple and gold all over it but it also wore clear balls with pictures of deceased classmates Ronnie Roach, Gail (Toll) Pinner, Kay (Hutchens) Cook, Sharon (Robinson) Tiner, Larry Corpier, John Harvey Dry, and Nathan Douglas. They also included two classmates who didn't finish but were remembered since they went most of the years with this class. They were Hester Ann

(Mayes) Brown and Larry Kirksiek. Two other classmates were pictured but are unconfirmed. A table was set beside the tree with flowers, a candle and a cross in memory of our classmates. Attending were: Sharon (Mitcham) Plummer, Virma (Derley) and David Fricker, Larry Corpier, Bobby Griffin, Danny Gunn (and Linda), Dianne (Everman) Burnett, Portia (Hurt) Wallace, Mitzi (Singleterry) Osborne, Donna (Hawkins) Alberson, Sherry (Taylor) Jones (and Teddy), Jerry Hosto (and Jean), Lavon Priest (and Debbie), and Shirley (Sharp) Goff (and Bruce), Ethel (Riba) Doom (and Woody). Also stopping by to visit was Sandra Kay (Reitenger) Hill who went

to school with us for a few years and Brenda (Hall) Simpson who was a couple of classes behind us. Refreshments and punch were served (provided by Shirley Goff, Virma and David Fricker, Portia Wallace, Bobby Griffin and Jerry and Jean Hosto). Virma and David shopped for the plates which were purple and gold trimmed, napkins, forks and tablecloths. Hazen Cemetery Donations

William Lamar Raper William Lamar Raper, 94, of Hazen passed away o n Monday, December 4, 2017. He was born on January 23, 1923. Lamar was a veteran of Wo r l d War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen (Peggy) Raper, son, Ronnie Raper, and granddaughter, Renee Red. Lamar is survived by his daughter, Gail Edge and husband, Warren;, son, Randy Raper, grandchildren, Brooke Waddell and wife, Veronica, Carson Lamar Raper and wife, Melissa, Ronna Edge, Shane Raper and wife, Amanda, Michael Ferguson, Scott Raper, and Laura Beth Jones and husband, Justin. He is also survived by several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Visitation was Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen. A graveside service was held 10;00 A.M., Wednesday at Center Point Cemetery by Bro. Billy Booth and Bro. Eddie Addison. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials may be made to the Center Point Cemetery.

a 1970 graduate of Marian Anderson High School. “Yogi” or “BB” as Benford was affectionately known, was a member of Taylor Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Forrest City, Arkansas for more than 20 years. Benford was employed with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department in Forrest City for more than 21 years before retiring in March 2016. He also worked for Yale Hoists, also of Forrest City, before for more than 18 years before it closed its doors. His parents, a grandson Blake Anthony McKissick, six brothers: Clarence Adell, Charlie Adell, Herman Adell Jr., Louis J. Adell, Carl Adell and Garry Adell; two sisters: Katherine Adell and Carrie Hardin all preceded Benford in death. Survivors are: His wife of 40 years, Nancy Metcalf-Adell of Forrest City, AR; a son Devin Adell Sr. of Forrest City, AR; two daughters: Sharon JohnsonMcMillian of Aberdeen, MS; and Dana MetcalfGarrison of Forrest City, AR; nine grandchildren: Latrell Garrison, Deadra Garrison, Elizabeth Garrison, Devin Adell Jr., Ishyana Maddox, Javian McMillian, Kaleah Adell and Destiny Green all of Forrest City, AR; and Kameron Adell of Wynne, AR; four brothers: Riley Franklin Adell, Buford Adell, Michael Adell and Oliver Wayne Adell all of Brinkley, AR; seven sisters: Barbara (Richard) Chunn, Evelyn Adell, Ollie Mae Adell-Davis, Cheryl Adell-Burnett and Carolyn Dillard all of Brinkley, AR; Mary Beth (Jeff Sr.) Hudson of Little Rock, AR; and Marilyn (Warren Sr.) of Flint, MI; a sister in law Lizzie Adell of Brinkley, AR; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 9 at 10 AM at Taylor Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 113 Farr Street in Forrest City with Reverend Jesse Brown officiating. Lori Jackson and Tracey Smith would like to announce the birth of their daughter, Isabella Grace Smith. Isabella was born on October 10th at 2:41 pm. She weighed in at 6 lbs and 11 oz, and was 19 inches long. She was welcomed home by her big brothers Matthew and Sawyer along with a host of family and friends.

Reunion continued from p. 1 (no information), Joanna (Ellis) Harden, Judy (Hart) Chism, Donald Thrash, Mickey (Tipton) Wagner, and Stephen Wolfe, Dickie Harden (no confirmed information) and Johnna Bynum (no information). After a good visit, some left and others went on to

eat a yummy meal at Murray's in Hazen. It was decided that we probably won't make another 50 so it was decided to try to meet again in about 5 years. Maybe this time, more classmates will be able to attend.

Christmas in the Park December 16th The Hazen Chamber of Commerce wants you to catch the Spirit of Christmas by making plans to attend Christmas in the Park, on Saturday, December 16th, from 5:30 to 7:00. The whole community is invited to come out to the gazebo in the center of town and enjoy luminaries, hot chocolate, cookies, roasted marshmallows, and music from the HHS band. Of course Santa Claus himself will also be there along with the Gingerbread Man! Bring your cameras and capture that special moment with your little ones. Merry Christmas!

Hazen PeeWee Basketball season opener Dec. 9 by Alexis Dulany The Hazen Pee Wee Basketball season began this past Saturday, December 9, 2017 with Purple and White games

for all age groups at the Hazen gym. The day began early at 9:00am and lasted the entire day with 10 scrimmage games in all. There was a great turn out of

parents and volunteers for this season opening event. The Pee Wee Basketball teams will be back in action this Saturday at the Hazen gym once again to take on the Clarendon Lions. The games will begin at 9:00am and the concession stand will be open the entire day. Come out and support your favorite Hornet players, admission is $2.00 at the door. All proceeds from the gate and the concession stand are returned back to the program to keep registration costs low and to purchase jerseys and equipment. Hope to see you there!! Calvary Baptist children present Christmas play

By Chris Weems “Wow! Twenty-six children to work! And about twelve of them are between four and five”, that was the comment of Sonja Owens as she worked with the younger children at Calvary Baptist Church to present their Christmas play. The play presented Sunday night, December 10 to a full house at Calvary Family Life Center. There were refreshments served after the play. The play was “An Outof-the-Box Christmas,” created by Celeste Clydesdale, arranged by David T. Clydesdale and published by MacMusic Inc. Sonja directed the play and was assisted by Freida Isbell with the singing, Beth Robinson, technical support, Amber Edge, Faith Snider, Carly Bokker, Whitney McMullen, Ashley Seely, and Ashi Smith costumes and stage, and most of the other mothers helped in one way or another. The cast was Miss Strickland, Natalie Robinson; Gabe, Sophie Raper; Samantha, Austyn Booth; Rory, Maverick Snider; Dusty, Ryleigh Cook; Leroy, Kaycie Seely; Lily, Cayden Calvert; Ava, Caroline Bokker; Elle, Chloe Smith; Haley, Paycen Seely; Cameron, Isabelle Gray; Bobby Broadway, Michael Bowman; Mary Abigal Owens; Cam Seely. Narrators: Olivia Edge, Chloe Smith, Caroline Bokker and Kinlee Boothe. Most of the other cast members played two parts. They were Solider and Cheerleader, Aaryn Owens and Abigal Owens; Sailor and Cowboy, Wyatt McMullen; Princess and Cheerleader, Bella Raper,

and Harper Cook; Clown and Cheerleader, Olivia Edge; Clown and Cowboy, Cam Seely; Ballerina and Cheerleader, Kinlee Booth and Lily Sayger; Football player and Cowboy, Lane Cooper and Austin Kee; Cowboy, Michaerl Bowman; and Stage Hand, Bradley Booker.

The play told the story of the birth of Jesus as a class fretted because they had not started working on time and the costumes they ordered did not come. They decided that “no matter how they did it, the story was the same beautiful story of God sending his Son to save us from our sins.”
