Des Arc School Board hires new Athletic Director The first of two executive sessions ended with the hiring of Coach Tyler Paschal to fill the positions of Head Football Coach and District Athletic Director after the resignation of Coach Drake Widner was accepted by the Des Arc School Board at the January 28 meeting. Present for the meeting were Superintendent George Kennedy, High School Principal Bruce Guthrie, Elementary Principal Cheryl Holland and board members John Reidhar, Jordan Smith, Stewart Morton, Charlie Brown, Billy Hinson, Sylvester Holloway and Eric Kennedy. Paschal has a Masters Degree in Sports Administration from Arkansas State University, and will begin his duties January 29th. Superintendent Kennedy thanked the FCCLA students who made cookies

for the meeting, OPAA who provided yogurt parfaits and Cheryl Holland who brought brownies. After a second lengthy executive session, the board announced that Superintendent George Kennedy's evaluation for continued employment would be tabled until the April meeting. The board felt that the six months Kennedy has been employed is not enough time for a proper evaluation. In other business, the contract for Facilities Consultant Aliza Jones was renewed for two more years. The board also voted to hire Mary Bryan as a long-term substitute for Elementary Teacher Amanda Smith and to hire Jennifer Treadwell as a long-term substitute for Pre-Kindergarten Paraprofessional Ann Harrell. A list of retired assets for

2018 was approved. Superintendent Kennedy reported that the cheer policy needs to be updated and asked board members to be looking at the recommended changes. He asked that they be ready to discuss the changes at the February meeting. Elementary Principal Cheryl Holland announced that as a fundraiser for Space Camp, the 5th graders will hold a Mr. Des Arc beauty contest. The contest will be held February 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the elementary cafeteria. Admission for the event will be $5.00 for individuals and $20 for families. Baked goods, drinks, and popcorn will be for sale. The class will also be selling candy bars from January 30th until February 11th. The students will be at Space Camp dates May 8-10.

Coach Tyler Paschal will be the new head coach and Athletic Director for the Eagles. Paschal was the Arkansas Razorbacks’ defensive quality control assistant and also assisted with recruitment. He has coached at Arkansas State, Wynne, Barton, and Jackson, TN.

The participating students will be raising money through Friday, February 22. Thanks to supporters and fundraising programs like the Math-A-Thon, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80

percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. Most teachers have offered great incentives to the students who at least raise $35 in donations. The help and encouragement of the teachers and faculty for their support in the fundraiser is greatly appreciated. They know the importance of a good heart as well as a great mind. Anyone wishing to donate to St. Jude’s can contact Earlene Tenison at Hazen High School. HHS thanks everyone for their faithfulness in years past and for their generosity this year. Student Council Sponsor Debbie Carlyle addresses the Hazen School Board about an upcoming project to fix problems at the high school.

Hazen School Board rehires Crowder for another year, approves new ALE After an executive session that lasted almost one and a half hours, the Hazen School Board rehired Superintendent Bill Crowder for the 20192020 school year. School Board Members Davy Williams, Vicki Skarda, Sandra Penn, Darlene Connor, Richie Ingle, Freddie Rogers, and Mason Sickel were present at the meeting which was held in the Hazen High School library on Monday, January 28. The meeting opened with a presentation by high school Social Studies teacher and Student Council sponsor Debbie Carlyle informing the board about a scheduled work day at the high school that will be sponsored by the Student Council. Carlyle has reached out to community clubs, organizations, and individuals to participate in what the students call “HHS Operation Rejuvenation”. Carlyle invited the school board members and district administration to come to the high school on Saturday, March 9 at 9:00 a.m. to help clean, paint, landscape, and decorate the high school “to help revitalize our facilities and our students’ pride in HHS.” She said that everyone who is interested in the school are invited to come with cleaning supplies and “elbow grease” and work on several projects that have been suggested by students and community stakeholders. Some of the things that need to be done, according to a list provided by Carlyle include power washing the outside of the building, cleaning the carpet in the library, reattaching the shelves in the library, sanding and painting the two sets of doors in the hallway,

painting the teal-colored metal panels on the west side of the building, cleaning windows, cleaning the old gym, and landscaping the front of the superintendent’s lawn. “I just think the community needs to be involved with the school,” Carlyle said. Skarda asked Carlyle about the formation of a Hazen High School Alumni Association. Carlyle said that there is a push to reorganize that group. Crowder asked the board to approve a commitment to the Arch Ford consortium of Beebe of $87,500 to participate in an Alternative Learning Education (ALE) program for the 2019-2020 school year. The fee will be paid with federal money and the money sent from the state to the district for ALE students. The money will pay for five student seats for kindergarten through the 6th grades, eight seats in grades 7-12, and 10 HUB seats. ALE programs attempt to keep students with behavior, social, or academic issues in school until they graduate. Presently, the district participates in the CORE ALE program in Lonoke at a cost of $46,000, but that program will be discontinued after this school year. “We believe that after the first year, the program will pay for itself,” Crowder said. Districts receive $10,000 for every student that participates in an ALE program for a full year, as opposed to the $6700 that the district receives for regular students. Crowder believes that the district will collect $132,000 in ALE funds in the 2020-2021 school year if all of the student slots are filled by the district. The HUB program is modeled after the Cabot

ALE program, which allows students who are in danger of dropping out due to various family and personal situations to attend school for 2 days during the week and to participate in internship programs that will prepare them for the workplace. High School Principal Clint Williams told the board that “five or six parents and students have already committed to the program.” The ALE students will be bused to Carlisle where the ALE will be housed, and an ALE teacher will come to the Hazen campus two days a week. The board unanimously voted to participate in the proposed ALE program. In other business, Sydney Reid was hired as the elementary Art teacher effective January 29, 2019. Reid has already been on the staff at the school as a longterm sub. Angie Cagle reported that the Personnel Policies Committee (PPC) had been working to put together a calendar for the 2019-2020 school year to present to the board at their February meeting. Principal Williams told the board that Kade Perry had been awarded the McLarty scholarship of $2000 for college. There was no superintendent’s report. At the end of the meeting, Board Member Sandra Penn asked about the use of the old gym for various functions. “Why can’t we use the old gym for community events,” Penn asked. “What’s wrong with the old gym?” Crowder said that the gym could be used by school organizations. "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before," (Philippians 3:13) Calvary Baptist Church West North Front Street, Hazen, AR Phone: (870) 255 - 4038 Christian VanHouten, pastor Sunday School: 9:50 AM Worship: 10:45 AM BTC: 6 PM Evening Worship 6:45 PM Wednesday Bible Study: 7 PM First Baptist Church 224 N. Hazen Ave. Hazen, AR 72064 Phone: (870) 255 - 4464 Sunday Service Sunday School: 10:00 AM Morning Worship: 11:00 AM Evening Worship: 6:00 PM

When it comes to practical jokes, Yours Truly is always on the ready. Throughout my earthly passage, I have perpetuated my share of practical jokes. I will not enumerate them here, the simple reason being, I might want to bring one out of retirement. I must say that most practical jokes are neither practical nor funny. However, I operate on the biblical premise, "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones" (Proverbs 17:22). With the high cost of medicine these days, I will take a merry heart every time. Just call me Dr. Merry Heart, and I will dispense some good medicine to everybody who needs it. Now, the practical joke I am thinking of has to do with New Year's Resolutions. I always look forward to the last week in January for this very reason. For the first several weeks of January, I am nervous and sweating over those lousy New Year's Resolutions I am forced to make. Pardon my French. Somewhere there is someone laughing at all of those stupid enough to make New Year's Resolutions. It is probably the quintessen-

tial practical joke played on all humanity. Is there a culture anywhere in our world today that does not fall for this practical joke? If there is, I want to move there. The first week in January is probably the worst week when it comes to these New Year's Resolutions. They are fresh in our mind not to mention fresh on our lips. A New Year's Resolution would not be so bad if nobody knew that we made one. The problem comes when somebody knows what our resolution is and constantly reminds us, "How's your New Year's Resolutions coming along?" For most of us, it is a formula for lying. Of course, I blame my friends who are tempting me into this pattern of lying. If they would forget my resolutions as easily as I do, there would be peace on earth good will to men. Nevertheless, during the first week, I entertain high intentions about my resolutions. And like the thoughtchallenged beggar that I am, I boast to everybody about the high quality resolutions I have put in force for the coming year. All this in an effort to improve my standing among my peers. Most of my peers are stand-

ing in high water themselves. My objective is to make them think that I am a progressive, forward thinking, highbrow person of the future. I cannot control what they think, but I can help them along the thinking process concerning myself. The second week of January is a high water mark for these New Year's Resolutions. It is during this week that I begin to have suspicions about the legitimacy of my resolutions. The first week they look wonderful, but the second week the rose begins fading and I begin to see what I have strapped myself with for the coming year. Then, just when my confidence is beginning to shake, a friend of mine will ask, "How's your New Year's Resolutions coming along?" On Facebook, they have a process called "defriending." I must find out how that works. I have a list of friends I would like to "defriend," at least until my New Year's Resolutions have faded into the distant past of forgetfulness. The next person that asks me about my New Year's Resolutions will be added to that infamous list.

Then the third week of January comes around. It is at this time I begin to see that my New Year's Resolutions were made by a fool. There is no fool quite like the one in your bathroom mirror. By now, I find there is absolutely no way those resolutions will be kept by me. If only I could sell my resolutions on eBay, I might make out pretty good, because on paper they look terrific. At this stage of the month, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage says to me, "How's your New Year's Resolutions coming along?" She always says it with a silly little smirk on her face. She knows that the boast of January 1 loses its luster by January 21. After all, she has 46 years, this coming summer, of experience with my New Year's Resolutions. It is the fourth week of January I am most interested in. To go through the first three weeks of January is rather painful but by the time the last week comes around everything is forgotten. Not only have I forgotten my resolutions, but everybody around me has forgotten them as well. At least they have given up asking

me about those resolutions. I take what I get and am thankful. Some may have heard about my defriending policy. The thing most troubling is, I never learn my lesson. Next year it will be the very same thing, and consequently, the same outcome. There is something to forgetting the past. I find it interesting that the things we need to forget are the very things we remember, and the things we should remember are the ones we usually forget. The apostle Paul understood this very thing. "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before," (Philippians 3:13). The best resolution has to do with my relationship with God. And that is no practical joke. Dr. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, 1471 Pine Road, Ocala, FL 34472.
