Des Arc School Board hires new Athletic Director The first of two executive sessions ended with the hiring of Coach Tyler Paschal to fill the positions of Head Football Coach and District Athletic Director after the resignation of Coach Drake Widner was accepted by the Des Arc School Board at the January 28 meeting. Present for the meeting were Superintendent George Kennedy, High School Principal Bruce Guthrie, Elementary Principal Cheryl Holland and board members John Reidhar, Jordan Smith, Stewart Morton, Charlie Brown, Billy Hinson, Sylvester Holloway and Eric Kennedy. Paschal has a Masters Degree in Sports Administration from Arkansas State University, and will begin his duties January 29th. Superintendent Kennedy thanked the FCCLA students who made cookies

for the meeting, OPAA who provided yogurt parfaits and Cheryl Holland who brought brownies. After a second lengthy executive session, the board announced that Superintendent George Kennedy's evaluation for continued employment would be tabled until the April meeting. The board felt that the six months Kennedy has been employed is not enough time for a proper evaluation. In other business, the contract for Facilities Consultant Aliza Jones was renewed for two more years. The board also voted to hire Mary Bryan as a long-term substitute for Elementary Teacher Amanda Smith and to hire Jennifer Treadwell as a long-term substitute for Pre-Kindergarten Paraprofessional Ann Harrell. A list of retired assets for

2018 was approved. Superintendent Kennedy reported that the cheer policy needs to be updated and asked board members to be looking at the recommended changes. He asked that they be ready to discuss the changes at the February meeting. Elementary Principal Cheryl Holland announced that as a fundraiser for Space Camp, the 5th graders will hold a Mr. Des Arc beauty contest. The contest will be held February 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the elementary cafeteria. Admission for the event will be $5.00 for individuals and $20 for families. Baked goods, drinks, and popcorn will be for sale. The class will also be selling candy bars from January 30th until February 11th. The students will be at Space Camp dates May 8-10.

Coach Tyler Paschal will be the new head coach and Athletic Director for the Eagles. Paschal was the Arkansas Razorbacks’ defensive quality control assistant and also assisted with recruitment. He has coached at Arkansas State, Wynne, Barton, and Jackson, TN.

HHS begins Math-a a-tthon for St. Jude’s Hazen High School will be kicking off the annual St. Jude’s Hospital Matha-thon fundraiser on Monday, February 11, according to Earlene Tenison, Math-A-Thon coordinator. The participating students will be raising money through Friday, February 22. Thanks to supporters and fundraising programs like the Math-A-Thon, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80

percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. Most teachers have offered great incentives to the students who at least raise $35 in donations. The help and encouragement of the teachers and faculty for their support in the fundraiser is greatly appreciated. They know the importance of a good heart as well as a great mind. Anyone wishing to donate to St. Jude’s can contact Earlene Tenison at Hazen High School. HHS thanks everyone for their faithfulness in years past and for their generosity this year.
