Hazen City Council adds to budget for remodel projects The Hazen City Council met in a special meeting on Monday, April 2, at 5:30 to dicuss the daycare center building and the Oasis Church, which is located in the City Hall building. Present at the meeting were council members Barbara Rogers, Tim Juola, David Campbell, and Steve Chlapecka along with Mayor David Duch and RecorderTreasurer David Hardke. Utilities Manager Phillip Foot reported to the group that the daycare building had been painted inside, but that the doors also need to be repainted. The cost to paint the 18 doors will cost the city an additional $2250. The council voted to approve the additional expense. Duch said that the Central Arkansas Planning and Development Committee would be present at the next regular city council meeting to answer questions about the usage of the city’s daycare building. The group then turned

to the remodelling of the Oasis Church interior space. Pastor Teddy Walker was there to answer any questions that the council might have. After looking at the space and talking to Walker about the church’s needs, the council decided to amend their original budget for the renovation by an additional $7226.44. The members originally voted to budget $6215 for the project. The budget increase will cover the removal of the kitchen area and building two handicap accessible bathrooms. The cost for the labor and materials for the plumbing will be $5300 according to Duch, and the bathrooms will be ADA compliant. The members authorized the mayor to pay for other plumbing expenses if the need arose. The city will also pay $4191.36 for electrical HVAC upgrades to be done by Bobby Derden, and will purchase $3950.08 to lay new carpet.

2018 Math A Thon Trip Thanks to Hazen High School and community for a very successful fundraising year the 2nd best ever for the Math A Thon, fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The students raised $6609.70 this year with 44 students participating. These students along with chaperones, Earlene and Tammy Tenison, enjoyed a trip to tour St. Jude, Wolf Chase Mall and Bass Pro shop. The top 20 fundraisers invited to go on a St. Jude Tour were:

LEXI TENISON, LOGAN DULANY, LANE SAYGER, ANTHONY WILSON, RANDA MAUK, BLAYNE TOLL, MCKINLEE VANHOUTEN, CHRISTIN YOUNG, AJ GREEN, KADE PERRY, NATALIE METCALF, TRACIE STRONG, GRANT SHELMAN, MADISON SICKEL, WHITNEY STROHL, LUKE VANHOUTEN, HANNAH WALKER, MADELYN BOKKER, ROSS HARPER, RHA SHEENA CARTER. St. Jude is a very educa-

tional tour but very sad as well. The students were very well behaved and seemed to listen and appreciate our tour. Our tour guide Abby Huber was one of the best guides that Ms. Tenison has had in her 16 years of sponsoring the Math A Thon. It is truly humbling to see how fortunate we are to have good health and see others that are struggling to live. Thank you all for your support in this very worthy cause. You have given us 16 years of success in the money raised to help St. Jude.
