Leslie Rutledge campaigns in Des Arc By Rita Dobson Friday April 8, the Leslie Rutledge for Lieutenant Governor campaign made a stop in Des Arc at D3 Auto sales. Rutledge was eager to visit with several Prairie County citizens and hear their concerns about the economy and how it's affecting Prairie County. Ms. Rutledge stated that if elected Lt. Governor of Arkansas she would work with the new Governor to reduce and eventually eliminate the state income tax. State Senator Ron Caldwell and State Representative David Hillman were both present, and Rutledge spoke of legislation they helped to pass that has helped to make Arkansas the most prolife state in the union. The event was hosted by Dare Saul, owner of D3 Auto Sales and his family, a lunch of fried chicken was enjoyed by those that attended.

Extension offering beekeeping course By Tracy Courage U of A System Division of Agriculture LITTLE ROCK – Beekeeping basics, one of the Cooperative Extension Service’s most requested courses, is being offered in-person this spring. The threepart course teaches beginning beekeepers everything they need to know to get started with honey bees. Classes will be held inperson on April 11, 18 and 25 from 6-9 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Service state office, 2301 S. University Ave., Little Rock. “There’s no experience necessary,” Jon Zawislak, assistant professor of apiculture and urban entomology with University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, said. “This is a perfect course if you have zero experience or if you’re a first-year beekeeper.” Honey harvested from the hives can be a source of income for beekeepers, and the bees

help increase crop yields through pollination. More than 100 crops are pollinated by honey bees, including fruits and vegetables, and forage for dairy and beef cattle. Zawislak has been teaching the beekeeping short course since 2009 and regularly gets requests from beginning hobbyists. In the course, participants will learn about the structure and function of the beehive, essential tools for beekeeping and learn basic honeybee biology and behaviors. Zawislak also covers colony inspection and pest management. “We will also cover all the seasonal tasks – harvesting honey, preparing hives for winter, and keeping colonies healthy,” he added. The cost is $30, and seating is limited. To register, contact the Pulaski County Extension Office at 501340-6650. For more information about honey bees, visit uaex.uada.edu/bees.

Political campaign signs not permitted on highways ARDOT reminds candidates for political office and their supporters that it is unlawful to place campaign signs on highway right of ways in Arkansas. “There are several Arkansas statutes addressing encroachment and the placing of signs or other objects on highway right of way,” stated ARDOT Director Lorie Tudor. Laws permit only official directional, infor-

mational and regulatory highway signs on state-owned highway property; the local Area Maintenance Office removes all other signs. ARDOT personnel will remove any “yard” signs placed on the right of way and will contact owners of large “billboard” signs. Owners can pick up the signs during normal business hours at the nearest ARDOT Area Maintenance Office.

be chosen. Carolyn Marek was in charge of the program. She spoke to the group about the different types of skin cancer and how to recognize them. She encouraged everyone to use a waterproof sunscreen with a strength of at least 50 during the spring and summer months and to cover vulnerable areas like the arms and legs with clothing while out gardening. She also suggested wearing a widebrimmed hat to protect the face. Sue Clayton volunteered to get two items to send to the state Master Gardeners’ convention for its silent auction. The convention will be held in Springdale on May 1921. Larry Anthony brought brownies for the gardeners to eat after their “brown bag” luncheon. Due to the recent heavy rain and unseasonably cold temperature, the Master Gardeners were not able to clean up the flower beds as planned, but former Master Gardener Deloris Tosh told the group that she and her husband Pete would take care of the cleanup. The next group meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 3, at 11:30 a.m. in the Prairie County Fairgrounds building. Linda Price will be in charge of refreshments, and Larry Anthony will give the program.

What happens in Vegas... HHS holds Junior/Senior prom

“What Happens in Vegas...” was the theme for this year’s Hazen High School Junior/Senior Prom held on Friday, April 8, in the school cafeteria. Casino decorations of red, gold, and black were prominent everywhere. Caterer LaNan Lisko and her assistant Janie Starr served up delicious finger foods, including chicken quesadillas and delicious sweets. EJ the DJ provided the music. Ruth Corley took individual and group pictures. The seniors are pictured above, and the juniors are below left.
