Hazen School Board discusses children’s literacy program and hires principals Mary Anne Williams, coordinator of the Margaret Fisher Literacy Challenge, Inc. and facilitator of the Arkansas Imagination Library talked to the Hazen School Board members about Prairie County’s participation in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library initiative begun in 1995 at their meeting held on Monday, March 26 at 6 p.m. in the high school library. Present for the meeting were Freddie Rogers, Richie Ingle, Davey Williams, Vicki Skarda, and President David Strohl. Board member Sandra Penn was absent. Williams told the group that Dolly Parton launched the project to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee. Parton’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families. The program gave each child a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age appropriate books directly to their homes, Dolly wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could ensure that every child would have books, regardless of their fami-
ly’s income. According to Williams, Prairie County was one of the first Arkansas counties to participate in the program. The organization has delivered over 60,000 books to preschoolers in Prairie and Woodruff counties since its inception. The now world-wide Imagination Library just recently delivered its 100 millionth book. Williams asked the board to consider contributing some money to the effort which directly benefits the school district by helping to prepare children up to 3 years of age for preschool. Williams closed by saying that her organization needs people to donate money. The cost per year per child is $25. She asked the district to donate $1000 per year. The Des Arc school district is already donating this amount. Board Member Skarda stated that she is the clerk for the organization in the Hazen area and said that she can be contacted for information about how individuals can donate money to the cause. In other business, the Hazen School Board rehired High School Principal Clint Williams and Elementary Principal
Mary Anne Williams addresses the Hazen School Board. Tiffany Glover for the 2018-19 school year after an executive session discussion. The group also agreed to pay Wilbur Mills Educational Services Cooperative $5,70 for the professional development fee for the 57 certified school employees this school year. Both principals were attending ballgames, but

Superintendent William Crowder gave their reports, telling the board that the elementary school will purchase 30 barricade slide locks for doors in the buildings, but presently the locks are on backorder. The district is also considering the purchase of 70 digital security cameras. Crowder said that he is leaning toward hiring a
school resource officer rather than arming teachers for security in the schools. He said that he is waiting to see if the state comes up with some money to fund school security efforts. “I think we need to do something by next school year,” Crowder said With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Aleigha Smith awarded 4-H H college scholarship for 2018 by Shea Wilson County Extension Agent FCS/4-H This year's recipient of the Prairie County senior scholarship is Aleigha Smith, daughter of Tommy and Nicole Smith of Ward. Aleigha was presented a $500 scholarship during the 2018 County 4-H ORama by Shea Wilson, FCS/4-H Agent. The Prairie County 4-H program offers an annual college scholarship to a senior 4-H member who exhibits outstanding achievement in leadership, community service, and 4H project work. To apply, 4-H members must complete an application form, include a current record book, transcript, and submit to the Prairie County Extension office.
Applications are reviewed by a committee to determine the winner. "This scholarship would not be possible without the many individuals and businesses who donate to our annual 4-H fund drive, so we can't thank them enough. We are really proud of Aleigha. She's been an asset to our program for over eight years and has excelled not only on the county level, but also on the state level as a Teen Star, Ambassador, and state record book/scholarship winner. Her level of involvement and dedication to 4-H while juggling a tough class load and maintaining an excellent GPA is very impressive to me. She is a determined young lady with an extremely bright
future and we are just proud to have been a part of her journey," said Wilson. To find out how you can get involved in 4-H, contact the Prairie County Extension Service at 870998-2614, email smwilson@uaex.edu, or "like" us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/prairicoarkansas4h.

Study Club celebrates Easter By Glori Strohl The Hazen Study Club met at 6:30 Monday night, March 26, 2018, in the Prairie County Farm Bureau Building. Hostesses were Marilyn Burroughs and Sherry Bullock. The tables were lovely, covered in lilac and featuring Easter themed decor. The serving table featured a “farmer bunny” dressed in blue overalls and a plaid bow tie standing behind a basket of sparkly pastel eggs. A more sophisticated bunny, dressed in a green checked sport jacket and a straw hat, was laid beside the basket in front of a flax pillow that stated “Happy Easter”. A wall hanging, printed with a bunny and a large easter egg in spring grass and “Welcome”, was placed over the table and completed this table scape. The banquet table was also covered in lilac. Large wooden ecru bunnies sat on either side of an ecru screened lantern on an oversized patch of faux grass. Smaller brown bunnies were at several points around them. Plastic multi-colored Easter eggs were scattered in the grass. Candy dishes filled with chocolate eggs and jelly beans were set at various spots. Each place setting featured a pastel colored ceramic basket filled with candies, a chocolate bunny and a pastel wooden egg inscribed with Hope, Faith, Peace,

Sherry Bullock presented the program, “What is Easter?”. Easter is the Christian celebration of Jesus’s Resurrection. She stated that Jesus’s Death, Burial and Resurrection fulfilled prophesy of Isaiah 53. She related the modern interjection of Easter bunny and Easter eggs into Easter celebration. The Cross is the most recognized Easter symbol as Christians celebrate Jesus’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Some Christians relate the rabbit emerging from its hole in the spring to the stone rolled away from the tomb when Jesus was resurrected. The h a r e ( E a s t e r bunny)/Easter relationship is said to be rooted in German traditions. Eggs are an ancient symbol of life. Christians see belief in Jesus’s life, death and resurrection as the beginning of eternal life for the believer. In 1290 Edward I of England had 450 eggs dyed or covered with gold leaf to be given to the royal family members. The dyed egg/Easter symbolism is said to have evolved from this English tradition. The Egg Hunt
Entertainment was a “Right Family” game and a “Choose a Sucker” game. Winners were Donna Chlapecka and Connie Swaim. After sharing many memories, club adjourned at 10 p.m.

The Easter bunny that got away... by Dr. James L. Snyder
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3: 5-6).

After any holiday the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and myself enjoy taking a day or two off and just relax. We like to sit around and tell stories. My wife usually starts by saying, “Hey, remember the time when…” And she goes on with a story that I had forgotten about. When she’s done, we laugh together. Then it’s my turn and I begin, “Hey, do you remember the time when…” And I go on and tell a story that she may have forgotten about, I really don’t know. When I’m finished, we laugh together as though it was the funniest thing we’ve heard all day. It’s just our way of relaxing and unwinding after a holiday. Holidays are very busy times for us, we like them, but they do take a little bit out of us. It seems that the older we get, the more it takes out of us. I'm not exactly sure what that means. Just don’t tell me what it means! We usually go on with our stories until we’re too tired to tell a story or to laugh. This last holiday the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage came up with a
story I had long ago forgotten. In fact, I’m not sure the details of her story matched the truth, but who am I to contradict her. “Remember the time,” she said rather soberly, “when the Easter Bunny got away?” I had to stop and think a little bit because it was not in any of my memory files. Then she began to unwind the story. As it goes, according to her recollection, I was going to do a little magic trick for the children before they were dismissed from the morning service. I was going to pull a little bunny out of a hat. I practiced for quite a bit and thought I had everything covered. I should know by now that the time you know you got everything covered there’s one little bit that defies your observation. I had all of the children come up front so that they could see the wonderful magic trick I had in store for them. I began by telling them the story of the resurrection of Jesus. According to my wife, I was in the middle of telling them the story when in the
back of the congregation Mrs. Steward screamed, “There’s a rat in the church.” With that, she jumped on top of the pew and did her famous afraid dance. You don’t want to see it. All the while she was screaming, “Rat, rat, rat.” Itwas enough to bring the whole congregation to their feet yelling, “Where’s the rat?” Having a rat in the church is not a good thing. I don’t know how a rat could get into the church unless he is elected to the board. There was such a rumpus in the church auditorium that we really couldn’t go forward with the service. I didn’t quite know what to do because we had not taken the offering yet. Whatever happens after the offering is okay. At this point I couldn’t get the attention of the children because they were standing on top of the pew looking backward, wondering where in the world the rat was or where it came from. I got one of my elders to go back and try to take care of the situation. I never had a rat in the church before. After a few minutes my
elder found the “rat” and caught him. The “rat” turned out to be the little bunny I was supposed to have in the hat that I was going to surprise the children with. How that Bunny got out of the box where I put him is still something that puzzles me to this day. The elder held up the little white bunny and told everybody, “It’s okay, it’s not a rat, it’s a little bunny. A little bunny can hurt nobody.” All of the congregation, including Mrs. Steward, sat down in their pew and laughed and laughed while clapping their hands for the elder who saved the day. I was even laughing and clapping myself. I didn’t know what to do now that my magic trick was out the window, it was hard to get the attention of the little ones. I finally dismissed them to their classes and try to bring the congregation back to some level of sanity. I can’t remember what my sermon was that day, but I do remember there was a lot of chuckling throughout my sermon. I’m not sure
anybody was even listening to my sermon. I was tempted to preach the sermon the next Sunday, but it wasn’t Easter Sunday. I could keep it until next year, which is probably what I did. Sometimes things are not always what they seem to be. The challenge is in the midst of turmoil to find what is really true. Perhaps this is what Solomon was thinking of when he said, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12). There’s a big difference between a bunny and a rat. Sometimes we confuse the two and in that confusion, we cause alarm. I want to be able to differentiate between the Bunny element and the rat element in my life so that I can have peace and tranquility. Dr. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, Ocala, FL 34472. He lives with his wife in Silver Springs Shores. Phone 352-687-4240 or e-mail jamessnyder2@att.net. DeValls Bluff holds Easter egg hunt at Pansy Park An Easter Egg hunt was held in Pansy Park and at the courthouse in DeValls Bluff on Sunday, April 1, to celebrate the Easter season. The Easter Bunny was there to hand out prizes and take pictures with approximately 100 attendees. The event was organized by Alexandria Prince, who provided the backdrop for the Easter Bunny. The DeValls Bluff Fire Department, along with Angie Norton and Prince, colored 720 boiled eggs to hide. They also hid 480 plastic eggs containing candy and put together 95 individual candy bags to give to the egg hunters. Donations of time, money, and materials for the event were made by the Biscoe IGA, Grasshopper’s, the White River Dairy Bar,
Crow Builders of Carlisle, and the DeValls Bluff Fire Department, Police Chief Charles Akins, Harrison Gladish, and Nicole Ring.. Summer Brooks, the director of the Aspire Program, also donated 100 candyfilled plastic eggs for the event. Bryson Fought and Abbie Blagg found the two golden eggs and were rewarded with $50 each. Zoey Barnhill and Izzabella Gaither Taylor were the finders of the two silver eggs and received $25 each. The oldest egg hunter was Fabern Harrison, who was presented with a hanging plant and $25, and the youngest egg hunter was Ryker Bogy, who received $25. Special thanks to Mason Martin, a.k.a. the Easter Bunny.
