Human trafficking is club topic By Chris Weems The GFWC International Club will hold its annual convention in New Orleans in June. The president of the GFWC would like to have a representative from each Club present. The registration forms will be out in the next Clubwoman magazine, as announced by Chris Weems, president of GFWC Elsie McCain Club at the regular meeting at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Nick's on March 29th, in Carlisle. Weems was hostess for the meeting and gave the lesson on Human Trafficking: modern enslavement of immigrant women in the USA. She said, "It is an extreme form of labor exploitation where women, men, and children are recruited or

obtained and then forced to labor against their will through force, fraud or coercion. Trafficking victims are often lured by false promises of decent jobs and better lives. The inequalities women face in status and opportunity worldwide make women particularly vulnerable to trafficking." It is against our laws so look for signs, such as a person dropping out of an activity suddenly, a child who is afraid to go into a building and many other examples. Watch for a particular behavior and talk about it. There are phone numbers listed often for that type of help. Help someone who may have a problem. The treasurer gave the financial report. Weems reported that the magnolia for the park has arrived and as soon as it

shows signs of "making it on its own" it will be put out in the park. She said it is a "Memorial for all our members who have died and to honor all our members who are still living," The Arkansas GFWC's Convention will be May 1-15 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Little Rock. the State President, Connie Cloinger, suggests that if you can't all three days, to come on Friday. The president reminded the members of the Operation Smile items that she'd like to send off the later part of April. She also said Arbor Day is April 22, and she doesn't think that the fifth grade will be celebrating because of COVID. The next meeting will be at 1:00 p.m., April 28. Hostess and place will be announced.

HIPPY learns about alligators... Linda Strohl and Jennie Gates welcomed HIPPY families to its March 15th meeting. Bison get two wins last week By Mark Buffalo Sports Editor The Carlisle Bison baseball team improved to 11-4 on the season by going 2-1 in games last week. The Bison beat Hazen 7-2 in a conference showdown. They beat Glen Rose 12-2 in a non-conference game. They also lost to Class 5A power Russellville 8-4. In the win over Hazen, the score was tied 1-1 after one inning. The Bison then scored single runs in the third and fourth innings. They added two runs each in the fifth and seventh innings. The Hornets scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Carlisle’s Holden Jones, Jonathan Pickard and Zach Busick scored two runs each. Nick Webb scored once. Pickard was 3 for 4 at the plate. Noah Seidenschwarz was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Dalton Ward pitched six innings, giving up only 3 hits while striking out 13. Austin Duck scored a run and had two hits for the Hornets. Mason D’Angelo scored the other Hazen run. “This was a big conference game for us,” Carlisle coach Steven Tew said. “Obviously our goal is to win the

Carlisle's Nick Webb winds up to pitch against Russellville last week. conference, and we knew we would need to get a win at Hazen to accomplish it. It was one of those games that perfectly describes the game of baseball in aspects of doing our job in the batter’s box but not getting a lot to show for it. I think we squared up more baseballs for outs that we have all year. “We started the game off with a double, then few out to the fence in left, then truck out after hitting a ball down to the corner that landed probably five feet from foul. Then we singled on another hard hit ball to score a run, then ended the inning on a ball crushed right up the middle but also right at the shortstop.” Tew said his team has looked sharp defensively. “We looked solid even with Dalton not having his best stuff on the mound,” Tew said. “He worked through it and still ended with 13 strikeouts. Holden came in during the last inning and shut it down for us, and, outside of a couple of mistakes there at the end, I felt like it was a solid

inning.” In the win over Glen Rose, The Bison led 3-1 after two innings. They scored twice in the third, twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and four times in the sixth. Jones and Busick each scored three times. Seidenschwarz scored twice. Also scoring were Pickard, Joe Cook, Nick Webb and Eli Roberts. In the loss to Russellville, Carlisle trailed 2-1 after three innings. The Bison tied it at 2-2 with a run in the top of the fifth. Russellville scored twice in the fifth and four times in the sixth. Busick led the Bison with two runs scored. Also scoring were Webb and Roberts. “It was really good to get out there on the field and compete the way we did with such a larger school,” Tew said. “Personally, it was a fun moment coaching against my alma mater and against a buddy of mine who’s father was actually my high school coach. It brought back a lot of memories being there.”

The BOGO Queen has left the building . . . by Dr. James L. Snyder

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. When it comes to shopping, I am three coupons short of sanity. I have never liked going shopping unless it has to do with books. Then I’m on my turf. When first married, I did go grocery shopping once but have never since been asked to do it again. I don’t want to know the reason; I will just accept the situation. The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage is a different story, and is why I call her the BOGO Queen. She has earned this title a thousand times. It took me a long time to understand what the word BOGO meant, then the wife explained it to a leader like me, Buy One Get One. If anybody knows anything about BOGO, it is my wife. Her whole shopping agenda is based upon this. She will never buy one thing if she can get a second one for free. I like that sort of thing. Anything that is “free” is okay with me. She will search several times a week for these BOGO coupons on her computer. Every once in a while, I will hear her say, “That’s what I’m looking for.” Then I will

hear several clicks, and soon the printer will be printing out dozens of coupons for the day. She knows every store within 100 miles and their inventory and when they are going to have a BOGO sale. I understand she knows that by searching the Internet. She knows what BOGO coupon to print and where to go to find them and then where to use them. The only thing that worries me is when she says, “Honey, could I borrow your truck for the day?” That’s not good news on any level. But then I have a hard time saying no. You can suspect the outcome. That’s why I never keep my fuel tank full just in case. If she uses it she has to put gas in it. That’s not BOGO that is BINGO. I must confess that I do have an ice cream fetish. I need to have ice cream at the end of the day or the day is not complete. My favorite ice cream is the one I’m eating at the time. I’m delighted to say there is enough ice cream in the refrigerator to last two months because of these BOGO coupons. But, of course, I

could speed up my eating and bring it down to one month. Nobody would know. If I am in need of anything, say aftershave, all I need to do is mention the fact that I am out of aftershave. Within the next 10 minutes, the BOGO Queen will have found a dozen BOGO aftershave coupons for her next trip to the store. Our cupboards are filled with all kinds of groceries and food items in other things of which I have no idea. Recently, when the BOGO Queen was out coupon shopping, I ran across a cache of cookies hiding in one of the cupboards. It was a “happy dance” moment for me. Then, with a great deal of caution, I opened one box and took out a cookie. I surely enjoyed that cookie, knowing that nobody knew that I was enjoying that cookie. About an hour later, the BOGO Queen came home and put her shopping bags on the kitchen table. She stopped for a moment, looked at me rather curiously, and said, “You did not find the cookies, did you?”

How she knew I found them, I will never know. I tried to stutter and change the subject and deny everything. But nothing worked. Then I came up with an idea. “You bought those cookies with a. BOGO coupon, right?” I smiled as I asked the question. She looked at me and said, “Yes, I think you’re right.” And she smiled as she was telling me that. “I,” replying very cautiously, “only ate the free one.” She smiled a rather curious smile at me and did not know what to say. Whoever came up with this BOGO idea, I would like to congratulate them. And there are several reasons why. First of all, it keeps my wife busy following through with all these BOGO coupons. How she can find so many at any given time is beyond my imagination. But, she does and spends quite a bit of time finding the coupon and then going to the stores and purchasing those BOGO products. It’s hard to imagine how much money she has

saved us these many years. Second, anything that is free will find welcoming arms with me. I love things that are free as long as they really are free. I love things that occupy my wife in a very positive way. And boy, does she do a good job in this area. As I was going over this, I thought of a very special Bible verse. “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again” (Luke 6:38). A generous spirit does have its rewards. What I have is a reflection of what I have given. I have discovered that the more I give the more I get. Of course, if I only give to get I have the wrong attitude.

Land Commissioner announces Prairie County tax auction results (March 28, 2022) LITTLE ROCK – The recent auction of tax-delinquent properties in Prairie County raised over $266,000, the Commissioner of State Lands announced. The auction drew 30 bidders, who purchased 35 of the 38 available parcels for a total of $266,626.66 for county and state government. The Land Commissioner’s office holds one auction in each county each year to return tax-delinquent property to active status. Since Covid-19

forced the cancellation of 2020 auctions and delayed 2021 auctions, this year’s auctions offer two years’ worth of properties. “Just a small portion of property certified to our office goes to auction,” Commissioner Tommy Land said. “The vast majority of owners redeem their property by paying the delinquent taxes. Of course, we always prefer that property be redeemed, but it is vital that the parcels return to the county’s active tax rolls.”

The COSL office forwards taxes and interest to the county, whether that money is collected through redemption or sale. “Last year, this office sent more than $16 million to school districts and county governments,” Land said. “Of that, $31,130.29 went to Prairie County, helping fund everything from roads to schools.” Property owners have 10 business days to redeem parcels that were sold at auction. This can be done online at www.cosl.org, using a

credit or debit card, or owners can call 501-3249422 to request a Petition to Redeem. If a parcel is not redeemed within 10 business days of being auctioned, the COSL will issue a Limited Warranty Deed to the buyer. Property that did not sell at the public auction will be available after 30 days and can be purchased through an online auction by viewing the Post-Auction Sales List at www.cosl.org.
