LITTLE ROCK – Casey and Leah Beth Skarda of Des Arc have been named Prairie County’s Farm Family of the Year. The Skardas began farming 30 acres of land that they rented during their first year of farming. The farm now encompasses 1490 rented acres and an additional 1400 managed acres. The crops grown include rice, soybeans, and corn. They
anticipate moving to more high-residue farming through stale seedbed planting and the use of cover crops. They have begun this process over 120 acres this year. The Skardas have four children: Josiah, 9; Samuel, 7; Piper, 6; and Paxton, 3. The county winners will be visited by a set of judges to determine the eight district winners, to be announced June 20.
9th Annual Memorial Day Celebration Service By Cody Snider The Hazen Chamber of Commerce is getting ready for the 9th Annual Memorial Day Celebration Service which will be held on May 28th in the Hazen City Park near the gazebo. The Chamber feels this has become an important event for our town, and it grows a little bit every year. It is a service to honor the 17 brave men from the Hazen area who gave their lives fighting to protect what America stands for - freedom. During the service we will have patriotic singing, a color guard, and we will read the names of our fallen soldiers and the veterans from Hazen who have passed away. The Chamber would like to obtain any information possible (such as date of birth, parents & family, branch of the military, rank, battle they died in, etc.) on the men listed below as to help honor them and tell their story, so that we will never forget what they did for us. If you have any information or would possibly like to speak about one of these men during the service for a few minutes please contact me or any Hazen Chamber of Commerce member. If you would like to send in information by mail please mail it to the address below.
Also, if you know any military veterans who have passed away this past year, please let us know so we can be sure to have their names read during the service. Thank you and we hope to see all of you on May 28th at 10:00 a.m. for the Memorial Day Service. Cody Snider Hazen Chamber of Commerce member Daytime PH# (870)6742702. Hazen Chamber of Commerce P.O. “These families are involved in noble and important work to provide food, fiber and shelter to the world. “Congratulations to these great farm families. We are pleased to honor their success, stewardship, and commitment to Arkansas agriculture.” Since 1947, the Arkansas Farm Family of the Year Program has served as a vehicle to recognized outstanding farm families throughout the state. The objectives of the Farm Family of the Year program is, *To give recognition and encouragement to farm families who are doing an outstanding job on their farm and in their community; *To gain recognition of the importance of agriculture in the community and state; *To disseminate information on improved farm practices and management. The Farm Family of the Year program begins each year with the selection of top farm families in each county and culminates in December with the selection of the state Farm Family of the Year who will then go on to represent Arkansas at the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year.
Arkansas has had two overall winners, Brian and Nan Kirksey of Clark County in 2008 and Wildy Family Farms of Mississippi County in 2016. All winners are judged on their farm production, efficiency, management, family life and rural/community leadership. Sponsors of the Farm Family of the Year program are Arkansas Farm Bureau, the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, and the three Farm Credit agencies that serve Arkansas: AgHeritage Farm Credit Services, Farm Credit of Western Arkansas and Midsouth Farm Credit. Additionally, support for the program is provided by the Arkansas Agriculture Department, Arkansas Department of Career Education, Arkansas Press Association, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture and the USDA’s Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service and Rural Development. Arkansas Farm Bureau is a nonprofit, private advocacy organization of more than 190,000 families throughout the state working to improve farm and rural life.

DVB City Council asks for Anderson’s resignation By Lisa Mills The DeValls Bluff City Council asked for the resignation of Mayor Kenny Anderson at their monthly meeting held on May 10, 2018 in the courtroom of City Hall . Anderson was not in attendance. After going into an executive session, Alderman Richard Henry asked for a “No Confidence” vote concerning Mayor Kenny Anderson. The council voted 4-2 in favor of the no confidence vote in Anderson. The reason given for the vote is that Mayor Anderson has known that Treasurer/Recorder Shante’ Williams has been serving in that position illegally since her appointment in June of 2017 because she did not become a registered voter until March of 2018 and that he withheld this information from the council The council then asked that a letter be sent to Mayor Anderson asking for his resignation. The council then voted to send a letter be sent to Shante’ Williams demanding her resignation as Treasurer/Recorder due to not becoming a registered
voter until after taking the position and for not satisfactorily fulfilling the duties of the position. When asked if the council could actually force the mayor out of office, City Attorney Mike Stuart stated, “No, but they can ask for his resignation after a no confidence vote. It will be up to Mayor Anderson whether he resigns.” As for demanding the resignation of the Treasurer/Recorder, Attorney Stuart stated, “The council can force her to resign according to a city ordinance stating she must be present at a certain percentage of the council meetings and because of serving in the position illegally.” Attending the council meeting were Alderman Richard Henry, Marie Flanagan, Alice Metcalf, Raymond Watson, Wanda Atkins and Shirley Goff. City Bookkeeper Leah Woodall acted as recorder. In other business, Alderman Alice Metcalf praised the Fire Department for all their good work and devotion to the citizens of DeValls Bluff and surrounding areas. She also reported that it had been discov-
ered that one of the new Fire Department radios had been burnt in the Mayor’s house fire and a claim would need to be filed with his insurance for reimbursement. Fire Chief Doyne Martin gave the monthly report for the department: 9 First Responder calls, 5 Public assist calls and 2 meetings. No Police report or other department reports were given. Vicki Skarda, volunteer with the Margaret Fisher Literacy Foundation, spoke to the council about the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. The program provides a free book each month for all children ages birth through 5 years. The program operates solely on donations. Skarda asked the council to consider making a $600 per year donation for three years, which is what most cities and counties agree to. No action was taken on the matter. Skarda also wants all citizens to know the program is available and encourages all parents and grandparents to sign up. You may contact her, a school or a library for information.
PC tax-d delinquent property sales net over $25,000 (May 14, 2018) LITTLE ROCK – The recent auction of tax-delinquent properties in Prairie County collected more than $25,000, the Commissioner of State Lands announced. Thirteen bidders registered for the auction, purchasing seven of the 13 available parcels for a total of $25,537.81 for county and state government. The Land Commissioner’s office conducts one tax-delinquent sale per county each year to dispose of land which has been certified with taxes past-due. “We auction only a small percentage of parcels that are certified to the office,” Commissioner John
Thurston said. “In most cases, the original owner redeems the delinquent property by paying the back taxes.” While redemption of property is the preferred method of disposing of tax-delinquent lands, Thurston notes the important role of land sales in returning inactive parcels to the tax rolls. Registered bidders may purchase land at the auctions. Registration to bid at land sales is free. Upon sale of tax-delinquent property, the Commissioner issues a limited warranty deed to the highest bidder. Thurston’s office returns delinquent tax and interest collected, whether through redemption or sale, to the county taxing
unit just as if the money had been originally collected there. “Last year, we returned more than $17 million to school districts and county governments,” Thurston said. “Prairie County received almost $28,000 of that amount. This is an important process, because it provides stable revenue for necessary services including public schools.” Interested Arkansas residents may visit the Commissioner of State Lands website, www.cosl.org, to view the public auction catalog, a listing of properties offered at auction, or the post-auction sales list of properties available that did not sell at auction.
