Hickory Plains has Cemetery Walk
Community Calendar of Events
By Debbye Harrison More than a hundred people wound their way around the Hickory Plains Cemetery at the first Cemetery Walk May 14 and 15. Civil War soldiers, their wives described their lives during war time and while living on the prairie. Doctors, bootleggers, and unknown soldiers told their tales as well. More than $2,000 was raised to repair and refurbish the tombstones in this 1859 cemetery. People from towns around as well as Texas and Oklahoma came to learn about their ancestors. One family who read the ad in the Grand Prairie newspaper was interested and then discovered that their great-great grandparents were being featured. Typical of Arkansas weather, Saturday was beaming sunny and hot. Then Sunday afternoon an overcast sky brought a fast moving thunderstorm that put out the

DeValls Bluff to increase city fees By Lisa Mills At the May 12th DeValls Bluff City Council meeting, a resolution was adopted to increase fees for utility connections and deposits and for the rental of city equipment. A list of the new fees is available at city hall. Attending the meeting were Mayor Brian Dodson, Recorder/ Treasurer Darlene Connor and Council Members Richard Henry, Marie Flanagan, Raymond Watson, Lalisa Wright, Alice Metcalf and Carol Griffin. The council adopted a resolution to execute a mutual aid agreement between DeValls Bluff and Hazen Police Departments. This will allow the Police Departments to assist each other in emergency situations when extra officers are required. A resolution was adopted to use American Rescue Plan Act funds to purchase necessary equipment for the DeValls Bluff Police Department. Police Chief Jeremy Murphy provided a written statement of his activity for the first month. He said that he has been
busy with a lot of administrative work to get the department back up and running. He stated that two grant applications are in the works. One grant will provide funds to hire a part-time police officer. The other grant will provide funds for an additional police vehicle. Murphy reported that he had responded to multiple calls; had made traffic stops (including 1 citation); and had arrested three people, which included the suspects at a recent armed robbery at the Jump Start Convenience Store. Murphy said the quick response from Hazen Police Department aided in the arrests. This assistance prompted the mutual aid agreement with them. Chief Murphy reported that he has been busy meeting with citizens and letting them know that they can contact him at anytime. Fire Chief Kelly Hutchinson provided a written report showing 14 public assist calls, 1 controlled burn, three work days, and two meetings. Utility Manager Eric Martin provided a daily work log for April.

Reinhardt), Lenzie Wilson (Alice Gardner), Evelyn Coppola (William Griffin), Brian Wolters (Bootlegger), Judy Gore (William Byram), Charles Oldham (Dr. W. L. In addition to the monthly meeting, the chapter held a Memorial Service and Remembrance for six members who had passed away. The solemn program consisted of prayer, worship, and scripture reading, along with a responsive reading, poems, and tributes to honor the deceased. Des Arc Council approves repair of collapsed sewer line By Lisa Mills At the Des Arc City Council meeting on May 17th, an ordinance was adopted to waive competitive bidding to repair the collapsed sewer line between 3rd and 4th Streets due to the repair being an emergency. A quote was approved from J & R Contractors in Palestine for $34,000 for the immediate repair. A motion was approved to purchase a new police vehicle to replace the one totalled in a recent accident. The 2022 Ford Utility AWD Police Interceptor will be purchased from McLarty Ford for a total cost of $42,000. After the insurance payment of $23,975, the balance will be $18,025. There will be a cost of $2,500 to install special equipment, most of which was salvaged from old vehicle. An ordinance was adopted to waive competitive bidding for a chain link fence at the
south side of the baseball field to prevent access to a ditch with standing water. The fence is deemed necessary to protect visitors (especially kids) from getting into the ditch. A quote was approved from Bill’s Fence in Cabot for $16,550. The quote also includes a fence with roll gate at the east side of field next to 2nd Street and a fence and swing gate between the fields on the west side. The council also approved a motion for the city to start paying the insurance on the buildings, fences, and other property at the ball fields which will cost the city $6,500 per year. This will relieve some of financial burden on the Des Arc Baseball Association. The council approved a motion to accept a rate increase from M-TripleJ Sanitation. Due to a 13% increase from the landfill that was effective April 1st, M-Triple-
J requests a 13% increase for residential customers. The cost will go from $14.16 a month to $16 a month beginning on June 1st. A motion was approved to update software to allow reading city water meters from the office. The update will be conducted by Henard Utility Products in Searcy at a cost of $16,570.56. Money is set aside each month for software updates, and the current balance is $100,000. The council agreed to accept sealed bids to repair roofs on the Senior Citizens Building and the Water Plant building. Bids will be accepted until noon on June 21st and opened that night at the council meeting. Attending the meeting were Mayor Jim Garth, Recorder/Treasurer Janice Huffstickler and council members Jodie Mayher, Nicole Fisher, Ray McVay and Gary Burnett.
