Marek hired as new HHS principal Amy Marek was hired to be the new Hazen High School principal at a special Hazen School Board meeting held on Tuesday, June 7. Board members present were Vicki Skarda, Freddie Rogers, Sandra Penn, Darlene Connor, Roben Cohen, Mason Sickel, and Debbie Carlyle. After the resignation of the present high school principal, Mark Price, was accepted, the board went into executive session for 14 minutes to discuss the applicants. Sickel, whose wife Janan had applied for the position, did not attend the executive session. When the board returned, they took no action. Then Superintendent Donnie Boothe recommended the hiring of Marek for the high school principal position. The board voted unanimously to hire her, and Sickel returned to the meeting. Marek presently works for the Stuttgart School District. At the meeting, the board also voted to hire Hazen High School alumni Brad Huffer as a high school math teacher, Brooke Prislovsky as an elementary paraprofessional, Jessica Mulherin as an elementary teacher, and Casondra Sims as an elementary teacher. The board also approved a new homecoming handbook which
outlines new procedures for choosing the homecoming court. In the future, the homecoming court will consist of 16 girls; two 7th graders, two 8th graders, three 9th graders, two 10th graders, three 11th graders, and four 12th graders who are in good standing at the school. Each grade will vote for its representatives during the first full week of September of the school year. After the court is chosen, the queen will be elected by the sophomores, juniors, and seniors from the senior girls chosen for the court. The princess will be chosen from the three 9th grade girls elected to the court. All 12th and 9th grade football players will walk in the homecoming ceremony, and the queen will choose the king from the senior football players. The king and queen may choose to have attendants, who must be chosen from students at Hazen elementary who are in the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, or first grade. Other rules for the court’s dress code, the crowning ceremony, the homecoming parade and floats, and the evening ceremony are also included in the new handbook. There was no other business, and the meeting adjourned at 6:28 p.m.
