First responders honored with outdoor event An appreciation picnic for Prairie County first responders was hosted by the Patriots of Prairie County group on Saturday, July 9 in Hazen City Park East, across from the Community Center. The event was organized to thank first responders in the county for all the hard work they do. The majority of first responders are volunteer and put their lives in danger when they are call to respond. Those honored included the law enforcement officers, ambulance services personnel, county fire department volunteers, city workers, and the wrecker company

employees of Prairie County. “We don’t recognize the professions that protect and serve the citizens on a daily basis nearly enough,” Rick Dobson, organizer of the event, said. “After the last two years the time was right to thank them.” Great food and fellowship was enjoyed by all of those who came. Entertainment was provided by the Stanley Young Band. Also in attendance to thank the first responders were Judge Craig Hannah, State Senator Ron Caldwell, State Representative David Hillman, and Hazen Mayor David Hardke.

ALADA announces officers Wallace Lyn Dixon Wallace Lyn Dixon, 57, passed away suddenly on July 8 th , 2022. He was the caretaker of Willow Bar for the past 15 years. Lyn leaves his wife Felecia, daughter, Janelle Taylor, Granddaughters, Jada Hardy and Kylee Hardee. Grandson, Cameron Taylor, Stepson, Drandy Barras and Stepdaughter A l a n n a Hickman.Brothers Bryan Dixon, Keith Dixon and wife Becky, Leland Dixon and wife Angie, Sister Teresa Doepel and husband Timmy, and numerous nieces and nephews. Lyn was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Hugh Dixon. Lyn was an avid hunter and fisherman that totally enjoyed his job of the last 15 years by taking care of the perfect place to hunt and fish, Willow Bar Lodge. Lyn and his wife Felecia have been together for 30 years and loved being out in the country taking care

of the land and facilities. With a big heart and what ever it takes attitude, Lyn loved getting the duck woods ready for the season as well as raising a litter of puppies. Hank Browne said of Lyn, “When Lyn and Felicia came to work for Cathy and me, Lyn knew about a lot of things, and over the fifteen years that we became closer friends and we got to know each other more, talking about our experiences. Because of that Lyn’s curiosity and interest about the world, nature, climate, other cultures, grew. We had a great time with lively discussions about so many different subjects. He was a very smart man and always surprised me about the latest thing he had read or seen on TV. Our whole Browne family was very lucky to have met and been with Lyn. Our grandsons grew up around Lyn, learned to hunt with him, learned some new words and we all enjoyed him so much. He was also a hell of a cook in the duck blind. He will always be part of our family.” As Walt Davis, hunting

brother of Lyn’s said, “Prairie County has never had a more colorful individual than Lyn Dixon. If you have ever had the pleasure of sharing a truck cab with him on Hwy 70, you would think that somewhere in a previous life he was a tour guide, for he would tell you where everyone lived and what he thought about them….. without reservation. Quick witted, funny, and caring will always be used to describe Lyn. Lyn would give you the shirt off his back and remind you for the next two years how it was his favorite! The Bluff will not be the same, the Dairy Bar a little quieter and from Hazen to Brinkley everyone will miss his horn honking abilities….. even at 5 am on his way to the duck-blind or deer stand….,,,.truth. Rest in Peace my friend. The family will receive friends on Sunday July 10 th, 2022. Visitation will be at 4:00 pm at the Westbrook Funeral Home until the gravesite interment at 6:00 pm in Biscoe. FSA accepting nominations The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) is now accepting nominations for county committee members. Elections will occur in certain Local Administrative Areas (LAA) for members. LAAs are elective areas for FSA committees in a single county or multicounty jurisdiction. County committee members make impor-

tant decisions about how Federal farm programs are administered locally. All nomination forms for the 2022 election must be postmarked or received in the local FSA office by Aug. 1, 2022. Agricultural producers who participate or cooperate in a USDA program and reside in the LAA that is up for election this year, may be nominated for candidacy

for the county committee. A cooperating producer is someone who has provided information about their farming or ranching operation to FSA, even if they have not applied or received program benefits. Individuals may nominate themselves or others and qualifying organizations may also nominate candidates.

Research has shown that 90 percent of a person’s brain develops in the first five years of life. That is why a child’s experiences and relationships during that time are critically important. Reading not only engages children and boosts brain development, but it also helps children and parents and children bond. This year the Department of Human Services launched the “10 Minutes Matter” reading campaign. Studies have shown that reading just one short book every day to a young child can increase their vocabulary by 300,000 words. Reading creates a wonderful bonding experi-

ence between parent and child starting at birth. It stimulates the imagination and expands children’s knowledge of the world. It also strengthens social and emotional development by teaching them words to express their feelings. Reading to your child for just 10 minutes a day can make a big difference and it is never too early to start. For families with limited resources, there are several ways to get books a little to no cost. The Arkansas Imagination Library works in partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to send every child in Arkansas from birth to age 5 a new book each

It was one of those naughty flings . . . by Dr. James L. Snyder

Busy weeks seem quite the norm for me. When I think things have slowed down, I turn a corner and things speed up again. So it seems like I never really get a break. This past week, for instance, was quite busy, and it was even busier because The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage was sick and could not go anywhere. Not even shopping! That was no problem. I just stepped up and took the week as it came. It was Thursday when things began to catch up with me. By afternoon, I thought I had finished all my tasks and was on my way home. Then, I passed Publix and remembered I was to pick up something for the wife. I turned around and went back, parked and went into the store. I was dragging my feet a little and thought it would be nice to sit down and relax with a cup of coffee. Then I remembered this store had free coffee, so I went and got a nice cup of hot coffee. I headed to the pharmaceutical area, where they had a couple of chairs snuggled back in the corner so nobody

could see me. I thought it would be a great place to go, take a breath and drink some nice hot coffee. On my way, I passed the bakery, and lo and behold; there were some fresh Apple Fritters. I have never seen Apple Fritters look so delicious in all my life. But, because of my strict diet, someone in our house has restricted this in my diet. I looked at them, and I just felt them looking back. I could feel them smiling at me, and I must say, I tried to walk away. I really did try to walk away, but I could not. Finally, out of desperation, I purchased two Apple Fritters. After all, nobody would know, and I could sit back in the corner and enjoy coffee and Apple Fritters. Who would ever know about this naughty fling of mine? Then, out of the clear, I heard somebody say, "Hello, Pastor Snyder. I haven't seen you in a while. How are you doing?" Oh boy, my fling has been unflinged. This woman was one of my wife's friends. "I hope you’re enjoying

your Apple Fritters. Tell your wife I said hello." At the time, I did not know how much trouble I was in. I just may forget she ever told me to say anything to my wife. "Is that you?" I heard someone else say. "Is that you, Pastor Snyder?" Once again, someone saw me. "Haven't seen you for a long time. I hope you're doing well." I smiled back and said everything was going okay. She smiled and said, "Enjoy your Apple Fritter; it looks very delicious. By the way, tell your wife I said hello." Two in a row has to be the limit. So, I sat back in the corner, sipped my coffee and took another bite of that delicious Apple Fritter. I was convinced that my incognito was well guarded at this time. For my wife's friends to catch me eating an Apple Fritter is quite dangerous. I finished my Apple Fritters, got up, went out to my vehicle and started on my way home. What a day it turned out to be. I went into the house,

put the groceries on the table and headed for my easy chair. As I got to my chair, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage stepped in, greeted me and said, "Did you have a good day?" One thing I know about my life is that she always asks "loaded questions." I never know exactly what is behind any of these questions, so I need to tread very softly. "Yes, my dear," I said as cheerfully as I could muster at the time. "I think I had a good day even though it was rather busy." So I flashed a smile back at her and thought it was over. I got situated in my chair, and she came back into my room in a few moments and said, "Did you see any of my friends at Publix today?" Now I was on edge. No matter what I say at this point, I will be in trouble. "Yes," I said. Then I mentioned the two women I met at Publix. "They all asked me to tell you they were thinking about you." "Is that all they asked?" Being a little nervous, I did not quite understand

what was behind that question. "We just greeted each other, and that was about it." She then left the room and went back to the kitchen, and I sighed a profound sigh of relief. I honestly believed that I had got away with it. Then I heard her say, "Both ladies texted me and told me they saw you at Publix." The way my wife looked at me, I just knew she knew my secret. My problem was, how would she use this secret against me and when? As I was pondering my current dilemma, I thought of one of my favorite scripture. Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” I have faced many situations where I certainly needed God to direct me out of a problem. Dr. James L.
