Delta District 4-H presented 4th Spirit Award trophy by Shea Wilson County Extension Agent-Family & Consumer Sciences/4-H Every July, the University of Arkansas Fayetteville campus attracts hundreds of Arkansas 4-Hers, making it the year’s largest gathering of 4-H members. During the 2019 State O-Rama
held July 23-26, 4-Hers not only got a glimpse of college life, but they also competed in what was the culmination of a year’s project work. The delegates arrived Tuesday and took part in an opening assembly before enjoying a night of entertainment in the Arkansas Union. Competitions were then held on Wednesday
and Thursday. This year three Prairie County senior 4-H members were eligible to compete in their respective competitions at State O-Rama. Aleigha Smith received 1st Place in Illustrated Talks Consumer Economics and 2nd place in Consumer Decision Making. Kaylyn Cannon brought home 3rd place in
Illustrated Talks Innovative Technology. Angela Hoover represented the county in Performing Arts Vocal, which is one of the most competitive events of the week. In addition to the competitions, Aleigha Smith was recognized as a retiring state 4-H ambassador. Other highlights of O-
Rama included: a college and career fair, tours of the U of A campus and departments; workshops; the Awards of Excellence Banquet; O-Rama recognition assemblies; and a night at the Jones Center in Springdale. Community service was also an important component of State ORama.
DVB puts property money into CD and general fund by Lisa Mills DeValls Bluff City Council passed a motion to transfer $50,000 from the $74,694 profit from the sale of city property to Dollar General into a CD to earn interest at their monthly meeting held on August 8th. Attending the meeting were Mayor Brooks C a s t l e b e r r y , Treasurer/Recorder Pamela DelGiorno and Aldermen Raymond Watson, Richard Henry, Carol Griffin, Marie Flanagan, Alice Metcalf and Shirley Goff. The remainder will be kept in the general fund to be used in the 2020 budget. Mayor Castleberry reported that the tree trimming along the city streets has been completed, but the cost exceeded the $5,000 allowed without council approval. Alderman Alice Metcalf stated that this was a vio-
lation of a city ordinance and would be a major finding in the annual audit. Castleberry said he didn’t know what could be done about it now. Metcalf said “we need to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” The personnel policy handbook was updated with three addendums: 1. Employee issued MFA credit cards for fuel and oil may only be used for specific things. 2. All employees must turn in timesheets to the bookkeeper before paychecks are issued. 3. The city may buy back an employee’s unused vacation time at the request of an employee. A motion was passed to accept bids to have the magnolia tree at the old bank building cut down. Communications for $2,819 to update the city telephone system. After going into executive session, the council returned to pass a motion that the Fire Department rescue vehicle may never be used for personal use. From this point on, the vehicle will be parked at the fire station with the keys inside the station. Any first responder may use the vehicle to assist in emergencies. Alderman Metcalf stated that Fire Chief Doyne Martin needed to be notified in writing right away. The Sheriff’s Department reported 135
Ground work has begun on the Dollar General property in DeValls Bluff. The city sold the land for $74,694. patrols and response to 12 calls. The Fire Department reported 10 runs. The Animal Control Officer reported
five stray dogs picked up that were unclaimed and rescued by the adoption facility used by Hazen Animal Control.
Drum-Line acquires calendar manufacturing companies Drum-Line, Inc., located in Stuttgart, Arkansas, is expanding with the acquisition of two calendar manufacturing companies. In March 2019, DrumLine entered into an agreement to acquire Elliott Calendar Company, based in Coshocton, Ohio. Elliott Calendar is one of the oldest manufacturers of promotional products, specializing in calendars since the late 1800s. In
June, Drum-Line acquired the calendar division of Western Pad, a California company. Amberlea Barnes, Drum-Line CEO, said Elliott Calendar and Western Pad’s production and customer service will be moved to Drum-Line’s factory. The company plans to add approximately 20 employees to accommodate the merger. Jobs in production, maintenance, and office support are available, including
supervisory positions. Drum-Line, Inc. is a supplier of American made paper promotional products, including journals, notebooks, calendars, and planners. The family-owned business was established in downtown Stuttgart in 1928 as a local print and office supply shop. Now DrumLine ships custom made paper products all over the world from its 75,000 sq. ft. facility located on Main Street in Stuttgart.

Chloe Smith of Biscoe and Paycen Seely of Hazen were recently selected to play in the USSSA All State Tournament in the 8 and Under Division on Saturday, August 3, 2019. In order to be chosen, players had to be nominated by a coach, umpire, or director. Chloe and Paycen started playing travel ball in 2017 for the Arkansas Rebellion softball team. Chloe Smith currently plays for Arkansas FleX and Paycen Seely currently plays for Arkansas Blast 2010.
