Delta District 4-H presented 4th Spirit Award trophy by Shea Wilson County Extension Agent-Family & Consumer Sciences/4-H Every July, the University of Arkansas Fayetteville campus attracts hundreds of Arkansas 4-Hers, making it the year’s largest gathering of 4-H members. During the 2019 State O-Rama
held July 23-26, 4-Hers not only got a glimpse of college life, but they also competed in what was the culmination of a year’s project work. The delegates arrived Tuesday and took part in an opening assembly before enjoying a night of entertainment in the Arkansas Union. Competitions were then held on Wednesday
and Thursday. This year three Prairie County senior 4-H members were eligible to compete in their respective competitions at State O-Rama. Aleigha Smith received 1st Place in Illustrated Talks Consumer Economics and 2nd place in Consumer Decision Making. Kaylyn Cannon brought home 3rd place in
Illustrated Talks Innovative Technology. Angela Hoover represented the county in Performing Arts Vocal, which is one of the most competitive events of the week. In addition to the competitions, Aleigha Smith was recognized as a retiring state 4-H ambassador. Other highlights of O-
Rama included: a college and career fair, tours of the U of A campus and departments; workshops; the Awards of Excellence Banquet; O-Rama recognition assemblies; and a night at the Jones Center in Springdale. Community service was also an important component of State ORama.
DVB puts property money into CD and general fund by Lisa Mills DeValls Bluff City Council passed a motion to transfer $50,000 from the $74,694 profit from the sale of city property to Dollar General into a CD to earn interest at their monthly meeting held on August 8th. Attending the meeting were Mayor Brooks C a s t l e b e r r y , Treasurer/Recorder Pamela DelGiorno and Aldermen Raymond Watson, Richard Henry, Carol Griffin, Marie Flanagan, Alice Metcalf and Shirley Goff. The remainder will be kept in the general fund to be used in the 2020 budget. Mayor Castleberry reported that the tree trimming along the city streets has been completed, but the cost exceeded the $5,000 allowed without council approval. Alderman Alice Metcalf stated that this was a vio-
lation of a city ordinance and would be a major finding in the annual audit. Castleberry said he didn’t know what could be done about it now. Metcalf said “we need to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” The personnel policy handbook was updated with three addendums: 1. Employee issued MFA credit cards for fuel and oil may only be used for specific things. 2. All employees must turn in timesheets to the bookkeeper before paychecks are issued. 3. The city may buy back an employee’s unused vacation time at the request of an employee. A motion was passed to accept bids to have the magnolia tree at the old bank building cut down. Communications for $2,819 to update the city telephone system. After going into executive session, the council returned to pass a motion that the Fire Department rescue vehicle may never be used for personal use. From this point on, the vehicle will be parked at the fire station with the keys inside the station. Any first responder may use the vehicle to assist in emergencies. Alderman Metcalf stated that Fire Chief Doyne Martin needed to be notified in writing right away. The Sheriff’s Department reported 135
Ground work has begun on the Dollar General property in DeValls Bluff. The city sold the land for $74,694. patrols and response to 12 calls. The Fire Department reported 10 runs. The Animal Control Officer reported
five stray dogs picked up that were unclaimed and rescued by the adoption facility used by Hazen Animal Control.
Drum-Line acquires calendar manufacturing companies Drum-Line, Inc., located in Stuttgart, Arkansas, is expanding with the acquisition of two calendar manufacturing companies. In March 2019, DrumLine entered into an agreement to acquire Elliott Calendar Company, based in Coshocton, Ohio. Elliott Calendar is one of the oldest manufacturers of promotional products, specializing in calendars since the late 1800s. In
June, Drum-Line acquired the calendar division of Western Pad, a California company. Amberlea Barnes, Drum-Line CEO, said Elliott Calendar and Western Pad’s production and customer service will be moved to Drum-Line’s factory. The company plans to add approximately 20 employees to accommodate the merger. Jobs in production, maintenance, and office support are available, including
supervisory positions. Drum-Line, Inc. is a supplier of American made paper promotional products, including journals, notebooks, calendars, and planners. The family-owned business was established in downtown Stuttgart in 1928 as a local print and office supply shop. Now DrumLine ships custom made paper products all over the world from its 75,000 sq. ft. facility located on Main Street in Stuttgart.

Chloe Smith of Biscoe and Paycen Seely of Hazen were recently selected to play in the USSSA All State Tournament in the 8 and Under Division on Saturday, August 3, 2019. In order to be chosen, players had to be nominated by a coach, umpire, or director. Chloe and Paycen started playing travel ball in 2017 for the Arkansas Rebellion softball team. Chloe Smith currently plays for Arkansas FleX and Paycen Seely currently plays for Arkansas Blast 2010.

GFWC members hold summer meeting in North Little Rock Lee Chester Hardy Jr. Lee Chester Hardy Jr., 64 of Clarendon, died Monday August 5 in Clarendon. Lee was b o r n Fe b r u a r y 23, 1955 in Clarendon, Arkansas to lee Chester Hardy Sr. and Bobbie Armour-Hardy. Lee was a former member of Baptist Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Clarendon. Lee attended the Clarendon Public Schools. He was a 1973 graduate of Clarendon High School. He went on to further his education by attending and graduating from Drummond Business College in Memphis, Tennessee. Lee was employed with Riceland Foods in Stuttgart, Arkansas for more than 39 years, where he had been working as a supervisor at the time of his passing. He had formerly been employed with Pipers/Stoddard Manufacturing in Clarendon. He was always a very hard working individual who believed in taking care of his family. His parents and his sister Betty Gaither all preceded Lee in death. Survivors are his wife of 42 years Doris ParrishHardy of Clarendon, AR; his son Latrell Hardy of Plano, TX; his grandson Keshaun Hardy of Plano, TX; three brothers: Melvin Gaither of Los Angeles, CA; Larry Dean Armour of Little Rock, AR; and Henry Dale Hardy of Dallas, TX; three sisters: three

Ray C. Wood Ray C. Wood 80, of Hazen died August 8, 2019 at the Des Arc Nursing & Rehab Center. Ray was born March 3, 1939 to Frank and N o r a R a i n e s Wood. He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife, Beverly Phifer Wood of Hazen whom he married on January 31, 1981; his brother, Roy Wood and wife, Peggy of Carrollton, Texas and his nephews, Tim and Keith Wood and their families. Ray was employed at the VanHeusen Shirt factory in Brinkley for many years and later at Producers Rice Mill in Stuttgart for 29 years until his retirement. Ray like to travel, take care of cows and loved his Boston Terrier, “Duke”. Funeral services were 2:00 P.M., Sunday, August 11, 2019 at the Center Point Missionary Baptist Church North of Hazen. Bro. Billy Booth officiated. Burial was in Shady Grove Cemetery in Clarendon, Arkansas. Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Saturday at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen. Pallbearers were Dale Perry, Matt Perry, Jerry White, Greg Shelman, Scott White, and Eric Evans. Honorary Pallbearers were Kenny King, Donnie “Oogie” Holmes and Ricky Avants. A special thanks to the Des Arc Nursing Home and to Arkansas Hospice for their care and love during the past few months.
Tammy Lynn Bowser Tammy Lynn Bowser, 48 of McCrory died Tuesday morning, August 6 at Advanced Care Hospital of White County in Searcy. Ta m m y was born March 3, 1971 in McCrory, Arkansas to Jerry Bowser and Ester Jean Corley. Tammy was a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in McCrory for more than 40
years, where she was a faithful member, a member of the church choir and the missionary society. She was formerly a member of Eason Chapel AME Church in Grays, Arkansas. Tammy received her formal education from the McCrory Public Schools. She was a 1990 graduate of McCrory High School. A very community minded individual, Tammy truly enjoyed helping others whenever she could. She, along with some of her good friends were involved with the Woodruff County Single Parent Scholarship Organization and the Angel Tree organization for more than 10 years. She enjoyed helping all people. Her parents preceded Tammy in death. Survivors are: three brothers: Jeff Corley of McCrory, AR; Thomas (Patrice) Bowser of Springdale, AR; and Tim Bowser of Conway, AR; two special lifelong friends: LaDonna Bumpers of McCrory, AR and Rose Freeman of Searcy, AR and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 10 at 3 PM at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 611 East Main Street in McCrory with Reverend Ross Cranberry officiating. Margaret Ellan Gates Margaret Ellan Gates, 95 of Eureka, Missouri, died August 7, 2019 at St. Andrew’s at Francis Place Nursing Home in Eureka, Missouri. She is survived by her sons, Robert Gates and his wife, Candon of Wildwood, Missouri; Sam Gates of Front Royal, Virginia; two grandchildren, Christopher Gates and his wife Jamie from Bristow, Virginia and Kevin Gates and his wife, Jessica of Florida; three great-grandchildren, Faith, Samuel, and Porter Gates of Bristow, Virginia. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Lee Gates from Hazen; her son, Thomas Franklin Gates; her parents, Homer and Glenn Ford; brother, Joe Ford; sister, Carolyn Parkerson, and twin sister, Mary Pate. A graveside service was held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the Center Point Cemetery in Hazen.

Dr. Diana Glaze, state president, of North Little Rock, presided. Members were asked to bring personal bygiene items and paper goods for veteran’s homes and nursing homes. She thanked the group for the items that “would be put to good use.” She discussed some of the changes that will be made in reporting and the actual work of the clubs, even though this is the second year of her term. Glaze introduced Casonia Vinson from the organization Partners Against Trafficking Humans PATH) to discuss “human trafficking.” Vinson said, “it is a crime against a person, and there is more of it around you than you think.” “They get the person in one of three ways: first is outright kidnapping, second is by fraud, and the

The City of Hazen would like all drivers to be aware of the following regulations for the upcoming school year: Please be advised that North Prairie St. is a one way street for dropping off children at school from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. and for picking up children between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Speed limits and stopping at stop signs will be strictly enforced with extra patrols on N. Hazen Ave. before and after school. There will be strict enforcement of passing school buses with flashing lights. West Front St. in front of the Calvary Baptist Life Center will be designated as a one way street on Wednesday evenings between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. from September through May.

The DeValls Bluff First United Methodist Church held its Vacation Bible School August 3. The older children studied about prayer, and made prayer journals. The younger children studied about Noah’s Ark, and made playdough rainbows.

The Prairie County Master Gardeners have put up a sign in the yard of Ronnie And Donna Rollins on Highway 11 North in Des Arc to celebrate their hard beautiful landscaping. The Master Gardeners will be placing other signs in beautiful yards in the county.
Blood Drive set for Monday, August 19 The Arkansas Blood Institute will make their regular visit to the Hazen United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 295 North Hazen Avenue on Monday August 19th got the Community blood drive. The time will be from 3pm to 6pm. It is an opportunity for you to give the gift of life, whether it is a transfusion for a cancer patient, someone facing surgery or
the victim of an accident. It is important to remember there is always a need. To be a donor, you must be at least 16 years of age and must have signed parent consent form. Forms will be available at the Hazen United Methodist Church. If you take antibiotics for an infection you are exempt. Most other medications are acceptable, if they are taken to control
a problem. Persons who have been cancer free for five years will be accepted. A donor card or a photo ID, are required. Back-to-School Bash held in Hazen Community Center Hazen held its annual “Back to School Bash” on Saturday, August 10, in the Community Center. The pouring down rain didn’t hinder the more than 300 students and their parents who attended to event.
