4-H H members boost leadership skills during Citizenship Washington Focus trip in July Local 4-H Members Boost Leadership Skills and Civic Engagement through 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus Prairie County 4-H members Angela Hoover and Sara Beth Toll were selected to attend Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) July 9-15 as part of the Arkansas 4-H Delegation. CWF is 4-H's premier leadership and citizenship program for
high-school youth held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD. CWF is more than a Washington, D.C. field trip - it's an opportunity for 4-H'ers to learn how to be citizen leaders and make a difference in their communities. CWF participants enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the nation's capital and the chance to meet mem-
bers of Congress; develop communication, leadership and citizenship skills through hands-on learning and group activities; and build new and lasting friendships. Angela and Sara Beth both received a $500 scholarship to attend this trip thanks to the local donors who generously give to the annual 4-H fund drive. 4-H is the youth devel-

The Hazen School Board held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 24 at 6:00 P.M. in the high school library. Members present were School Board President David Strohl, David Williams, Richie Ingle, Freddy Rogers, Sandra Penn, and Vicki Skarda. The minutes from the regular June meeting and the special meeting held on July 11th were approved. District Treasurer Warrants #26519-26713 and 4355943862, Activity and Athletic Checks #7637076394, and Cafeteria Warrants #84559-84568 were all approved. Superintendent William Crowder was approved as the Ex-Officio Financial Secretary for the 20172018 school year. Sarah Snider was approved as the District Treasurer for
the school year. The 2017 Election Resolution to conduct the September 19, 2017 school election by absentee and early voting was approved. A $1/day tuition increase for Pre-K for the 2017-2018 school year from the Superintendent’s recommendation was approved. The Superintendent’s recommendation to use Ben E. Keith and Sysco as food service suppliers and Hiland Dairy Foods for milk purchases was also approved for the upcoming school year. The recommendations to accept changes to the Hazen School District Student Policies and the approval of both the 2017-2018 Elementary and High School Handbooks were approved. Minor changes
were made to both handbooks. Walker Therapy was approved as the
PT/OT service provider for the school year as well. Open bids for the sale of three used buses was also discussed. One bid was made for $350 per bus out of Hot Springs. The board motioned to table the matter until a later time, all member were in favor. The recommendations to hire Bradley Goodin as Social Studies teacher, Beth Robinson as the girls’ junior high and high school basketball coach, Sarah Joshlin as a Pre-K Aide, and Holly Calvert as a lunch room worker all for the 20172018 school year were all approved. Janan Sickel was approved to be transferred from Elementary
Counselor to High School Counselor for the school year. The resignation of Christine Price as a Paraprofessional was approved. Elementary Principal Tiffany Glover updated the board on the on going phonics training for some of the teachers and the structural updates to the elementary buildings. High School Principal Clint Williams expressed his excitement for the start of the school year to the board and informed them of the continued work on class scheduling. The School Board went into executive session to discuss personnel, but took no action. The meeting was then adjourned.
