Tim Griffin speaks at annual Farm Bureau meeting Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin was the guest speaker at the 2019 Prairie County Farm Bureau’s annual board meeting held on Thursday, August 22, in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tollville. Board President Mason Sickel presided over the meeting. Prairie County 4H Teen Leader R. J. Nicholson gave the invocation, and Brylee McIntosh of the Des Arc 4H Team Turtelz led the attendants in Pledge of Allegiance. Griffin was elected the lieutenant governor of Arkansas on November 4, 2014, and was re-elected for his second four-year term on November 6, 2018. From 2011-2015, Griffin served as the 24th representative of Arkansas’s Second Congressional District. For the 113th Congress, he was a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means while also serving as a Deputy Whip for the Majority. In the 112th Congress, he served as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on the Judiciary. Griffin is a graduate of Magnolia High School, Hendrix College in Conway and Tulane Law School in New Orleans, and attended graduate school at Oxford University. Griffin has served as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve, Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps, for over 22 years and currently holds the rank of colonel. In 2005, Griffin was mobilized to active duty as an Army prosecutor at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and served with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Mosul, Iraq. He is currently serving as the Commander of the 134th Legal Operations Detachment (LOD) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Prior to his current post, Griffin served as a senior legislative advisor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness at the

Griffin holds a master's degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He served as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas and Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Political Affairs for President George W. Bush. Griffin lives in Little Rock with his wife Elizabeth, a Camden native, and their three children. In his address, Griffin stressed the need to open markets for the food that is grown in Arkansas. He said that although China is a threat, the tariffs have affected Arkansas farmers. “We need to keep it (the tariff) as short as possible, because it’s hurting a lot of farmers,” he said. “We need that USMCA (U.S., Mexico, Canada agreement) trade agreement,” Griffin said. “This new agreement is not perfect...but it’s an improvement, and we absolutely need to get it in place.” Griffin also emphasized that the Arkansas Plant Board needed to remain apolitical. He also said that Arkansas needs to stay ahead of other states and countries in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. “We’re in competition with other states and other countries, and we need to keep progressing to compete,” he said. “The key is to not get satisfied because other states are changing too.”
Griffin said that the state is working toward better policies to maintain sustainable jobs. “We have done extraordinary things for the size of our state,” he said.
After Griffin spoke, Chris, Amanda, and Morgan Berg were presented a plaque for being chosen the 2019 Prairie County Farm Family of the Year.
The financial, membership, and insurance reports were given, and Bobby Lott congratulated Jed Reidhar on being the recipient of the first Prairie County Farm Bureau Scholarship. Farm Bureau Agent Ronny Bednar (who recently pass away) was remembered by the group. Two resolutions were passed, one to prevent watershed rulings like the one concerning the Buffalo River watershed and the C & H Hog Farm and one opposing modifications to the structure of rice checkoff programs. The women of St. Peter’s Church provided a meal of pork chops, rice, other vegetables, bread, and desserts for those attending the meeting.
