Tim Griffin speaks at annual Farm Bureau meeting Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin was the guest speaker at the 2019 Prairie County Farm Bureau’s annual board meeting held on Thursday, August 22, in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tollville. Board President Mason Sickel presided over the meeting. Prairie County 4H Teen Leader R. J. Nicholson gave the invocation, and Brylee McIntosh of the Des Arc 4H Team Turtelz led the attendants in Pledge of Allegiance. Griffin was elected the lieutenant governor of Arkansas on November 4, 2014, and was re-elected for his second four-year term on November 6, 2018. From 2011-2015, Griffin served as the 24th representative of Arkansas’s Second Congressional District. For the 113th Congress, he was a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means while also serving as a Deputy Whip for the Majority. In the 112th Congress, he served as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on the Judiciary. Griffin is a graduate of Magnolia High School, Hendrix College in Conway and Tulane Law School in New Orleans, and attended graduate school at Oxford University. Griffin has served as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve, Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps, for over 22 years and currently holds the rank of colonel. In 2005, Griffin was mobilized to active duty as an Army prosecutor at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and served with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Mosul, Iraq. He is currently serving as the Commander of the 134th Legal Operations Detachment (LOD) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Prior to his current post, Griffin served as a senior legislative advisor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness at the

Griffin holds a master's degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He served as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas and Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Political Affairs for President George W. Bush. Griffin lives in Little Rock with his wife Elizabeth, a Camden native, and their three children. In his address, Griffin stressed the need to open markets for the food that is grown in Arkansas. He said that although China is a threat, the tariffs have affected Arkansas farmers. “We need to keep it (the tariff) as short as possible, because it’s hurting a lot of farmers,” he said. “We need that USMCA (U.S., Mexico, Canada agreement) trade agreement,” Griffin said. “This new agreement is not perfect...but it’s an improvement, and we absolutely need to get it in place.” Griffin also emphasized that the Arkansas Plant Board needed to remain apolitical. He also said that Arkansas needs to stay ahead of other states and countries in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. “We’re in competition with other states and other countries, and we need to keep progressing to compete,” he said. “The key is to not get satisfied because other states are changing too.”

Griffin said that the state is working toward better policies to maintain sustainable jobs. “We have done extraordinary things for the size of our state,” he said.

After Griffin spoke, Chris, Amanda, and Morgan Berg were presented a plaque for being chosen the 2019 Prairie County Farm Family of the Year.

The financial, membership, and insurance reports were given, and Bobby Lott congratulated Jed Reidhar on being the recipient of the first Prairie County Farm Bureau Scholarship. Farm Bureau Agent Ronny Bednar (who recently pass away) was remembered by the group. Two resolutions were passed, one to prevent watershed rulings like the one concerning the Buffalo River watershed and the C & H Hog Farm and one opposing modifications to the structure of rice checkoff programs. The women of St. Peter’s Church provided a meal of pork chops, rice, other vegetables, bread, and desserts for those attending the meeting.

It’s rice harvest time again... Steve and Allyson Chlapecka delivered the first load of rice to Riceland Foods Hazen on August 20, 2019. The variety is Gemini and the moisture was 17.4%. (Photo courtesy of Roxanne Bray.)

Those attending the Clinton Dinner, representing Prairie County, are (seated) Lexie George, Claretta Anderson, Wilma Robinson, Thelma Gray, and Helen Holloway; and (standing) Chris Weems, Charles George, Bob and Martha Ann Childers, and Harvey Joe Sanner. By Chris Weems Ten members of the Prairie County Democratic Committee attended the third annual Clinton Dinner in Little Rock held at the Statehouse Convention Center on Saturday evening, August 17. Beto O’Rourke, a candidate for U. S. President, was the keynote speaker for the event. O’Rourke, a fourth-generation Texan, was born and raised in El Paso. He got the audience into the program immediately by saying, “There’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and that’s to call the Hogs with a group pf fans who are ready for the season to begin”. And he did. After the “Hog Call” he told about being in Conway Saturday and standing under a sign advertising an AR-15

style assault rifle for $395 - the type weapon the former Texas congressman hopes to ban if elected President. He said the shooting in his hometown had killed 22 people. The average number of homicides for the past several years in El Paso, a city of over 170,000, has been 18. O’Rourke discussed other issues that are high on his list of things to work on: racism, immigration, Veteran Affairs, medical health issues for service men, education, the U.S.-Mexican border, and many other things. Democratic Party of Arkansas (DPA) President Michael John Gray of Augusta, introduced O’Rourke, and thanked all for coming to both the evening meeting and the called meeting held that morning. The Reverend Andrea

Cummings, St. Luke Complex Pastor, Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church gave the invocation. The pledge of

2020 Presidential Candidate Beto O’Rourke Allegiance was led by Abigail M. Edwards, a third grade student from the Little Rock Public Schools. The National Anthem was sung by the Purpose Acapella Music

Ministry, and the welcome was given by Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott. Some of the annual awards presented were the Ed Fry Democrat of the Year Award, which went to Bob G. Nash; the Daisy and L.C. Bates Humanitarian Award, which went to the Community of Prescott; the Herald Jinks ‘Man of the Year’ Award, which was given to Jay Barth; and the Gressie Carnes ‘Woman of the Year‘ Award, which was presented to Deborah Mitchell. The dinner was served buffet style to a crowd of about 1,500 Arkansans and several out-of-state guests. Each person attending the event received a poster copy of the original painting that was auctioned off as a fundraiser for the DPA.

Grand Prairie Center to present free children’s theatre this season

The Grand Prairie Center in Stuttgart will present four free children’s shows this 20192020 season thanks to the Arkansas Arts Center’s Children’s Theater on Tour Program and the Rotary Club of Stuttgart. Area schools, home school organizations and parents with small children are welcome to attend. The dates, times and recommended ages for the shows’ attendees are as follows: Wynken, Blynken and Nod: A Play for the Very Young; 9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m., Monday, September 30, 2019 (Recommended: Toddlers, Pre-K, & Kindergarten.) Toddlers and preschoolers will delight in the enchanting and whimsical journey of Wynken, Blynken, and Nod as they sail away one magical night and meet the mystical Moon. This interactive musical for earlychildhood audiences explores the fantasy world of dreams. The night sky becomes the sea and stars become fish as audience members see, touch, and participate throughout the play. Join Wynken, Blynken, Nod, and the Moon on this 45minute multi-sensory adventure for the very young. A Christmas Carol; 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2019 (Recommended for students in grades 2nd – 5th). Clever, comedic, and kid-friendly, this holiday play breathes new life into Dickens’ heart-worming classic. Schooled by a team of magical Christmas Eve visitors, Ebenezer Scrooge, the most miserable of all misers, rediscovers the true spirit of the season – one of love, generosity, and family. With these

touchstones of happiness revived in him, he wakes Christmas morning to find himself “light as a feather, happy as an angel, and merry as a schoolboy!” The Arkansas Story Porch; 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 24, 2020, (Recommended for grades 3rd – 5th.) Old Winnie and Monroe Jones are the fun-lovin’est pair of Ozark hill folk you’ll ever hope to meet. Nothing tickles them more than sitting on their plank-board porch with friends and neighbors spinning yarns and singing songs of Arkansas lore and Arkansas history. And guess what? You’re invited! So, pull up a seat and get ready to laugh and sing. It’s Arkansas story time, y’all! The Wind in the Willows; 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 27, 2020, (Recommended for grades K – 5th.) For Mole, Rat, and Badger, springtime is a time for new life, new friendships, and enjoying the simple pleasures – that is, until Mr. Toad of Toad Hall careens onto the scene. After a madcap spree of weasel clashes and motorcar crashes, it is up to the three friends to take the prodigal toad in hand and rescue him from his most dangerous enemy – himself. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the box office of the Grand Prairie Center at 870-673-4201, Ext. 1895 or email Renee Robison at rrobison@pccua.edu. Grand Prairie Center is owned and operated by Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas-Stuttgart, located at 2709 Highway 165 South, Stuttgart, Arkansas 72160.
