Maudie Viola

Nail Robinson

Biscoe, Arkansas. She grew up working with her parents on the farm and attended local grade school in Biscoe, later transitioning to the DeValls Bluff School District where she graduated high school in 1964. Shortly after graduation, she married her sweetheart, Clifton, and they lived in and around DeValls Bluff for most of her adult life. Between tolerating Clifton’s antics and enduring the raising of three rough, rowdy, and rambunctious boys, there is no doubt she deserves a special place in heaven. Fortunately, God later blessed her with seven granddaughters to balance out the testosterone overload that she endured earlier in life.

She worked at various office jobs and the local bank for a significant part of her early career. Her affection for children later led to her operating a small childcare service from her home. From 1990 until 2007, she and her husband, Clifton, were employed as caretakers for a local hunting lodge

before transitioning at their retirement to Mountain Home, Arkansas.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. After undergoing initial treatment, she was declared to be in remission but experienced a late recurrence in November of 2020. She was able to treat this with conservative management until it ultimately ended her earthly life.

Maudie was a Christfollower, and it is because of her personal relationship and daily walk with Jesus that we have great reassurance that she is rejoicing in the presence of her King. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was a caring friend to all who knew her. By earthly standards, she held no lofty aspirations beyond her God-given task of loving and humbly serving others. She left a positive mark on all those whom she encountered. A visitation was held on Friday, September 6, 2024, from noon until 2 pm at Conner Family

Funeral Home in Mountain Home. There was also a visitation from noon until funeral service time at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at the First United Methodist Church in Hazen, Arkansas. Graveside services will follow at Oakland Cemetery in DeValls Bluff. Arrangements for the services in Hazen and burial are entrusted with Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen, Arkansas. We kindly invite all family and friends to join us as we honor the memory of our loved one and celebrate the promise of our Savior for those who know Him. While we mourn, we do so not as those who have no hope! Memorials can be made in lieu of flowers to Mountain Home Christian Academy, where she served previously as a volunteer, and which in turn served her regularly by supporting her for more than a decade through its Widow’s Ministry.

Maudie Viola Nail Robinson transitioned to eternal life on Monday, September 2nd, 2024, at the age of 78 years. She is preceded in death by her parents (Naymond Nail and Ora Lucy Smith Nail); her husband, Clifton Robinson; a son, Gary Robinson; her siblings and their respective spouses, Rainey and Billie Nail, Austin Nail, Doyle and Mary Lou Nail Baker; her sisterin-law, Mary Sid Dollar Nail; as well as a brother-in-law, Billy Joe Cook.

J.W. McWhorter of Hazen, Arkansas passed away Sunday afternoon, September 1 at Baptist Hospital North, with his family by his side.

J.W. was born to Judy (Weatherley) and Johnny McWhorter of the Johnson Chapel Community December 28, 1942. He attended Des Arc School through the 8th grade. Then he began farming with his dad. In 1963, he met and married Patricia (Bailey). After a very short courtship, one month, the young couple were married and made their home in Des Arc. The family was blessed with two children, Calvin and Judy.

She is survived by a brother, Dean Nail of Dallas, TX, and two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Oxford Nail of Biscoe and Debbie Robinson Cook (John Boyce) of Cabot; her children, Greg (Melody) Robinson of Hazen; Lonnie (Robin) Robinson of Mountain Home; a daughter-inlaw, Beth Novak Robinson of Hazen; ten grandchildren/bonus grandchildren: Katelyn Robinson Noah (Brett), Andrew Frazier, Vandon Robinson Dukes (Micah), Stone Robinson, Hunter Robinson, Caroline Robinson, Natalie Robinson, Mari Claire Robinson, Trinity Bobbitt and Blair Robinson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. She leaves behind a legacy of love to all who knew and loved her.

For the first time in my life, I've been having health issues. It was nothing serious, but just enough to be aggravating. The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage has been very helpful with my medical issues. She arranges all of the medicine I'm supposed to take every day; otherwise, I probably wouldn't take any. She often asks me, "How are you today?" I look at her, smile, and say, "I'm fine." "No, you are not fine. Now take your medicine." Obviously, she doesn't think I'm fine, but I guess I'm fine with that. My health issues are very superficial, at least from my perspective. I get up in the morning, eat everything I can get a hold of, take a little nap in the afternoon, and do whatever I want to do. No matter what I do or don't do, I am still "not fine," according to The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. When I have a doctor's appointment, she usually accompanies me because she knows I will not remember anything the doctor says. Of course, she is

absolutely truthful about that. I hear what my doctor is saying, but I'm not always listening to what he says. The only thing I hear from the doctor is, "You're doing fine; keep up the good work."

Most health issues had to do with getting old. The older you get, the more your body seems to wear out. So, I'm going to continue getting as old as I can, even if it means hobbling down the road of life.

I noticed something rather interesting. Whenever I go to see a doctor, he or she is always looking for what's wrong with me. I never had a doctor examine me to find something that was right with me.

I know what that means, of course. If there's nothing wrong with me, the doctor has no job. If he does find something wrong, no matter how small, he at least has a job.

Several years ago, before I had these health issues, I went to my doctor every year for an annual checkup. Every time I went, the doctor ended the session by saying, "Somebody your age should have something wrong with

them." He was always trying to find something wrong with me. It's a good thing I wasn't seeing a psychiatrist. I remember something happening at one of my yearly visits to the doctor. It was on a Monday, and the day before, I had an episode of shingles on the right side of my body. At the time, I didn't know what it was.

When I went to see the doctor on Monday, I showed him some of the marks on my right arm, and I've never seen my doctor so excited. He said, "Let me examine that. Something must be wrong."

Well, he examined it and re-examined it, and every time he examined it, his smile got bigger and bigger. Then, after his examination, he said, "You have been hit with the shingles."

Of course, I didn't know what that meant at the time, but he explained it, and every other sentence was a giggle. I'm one patient who never had anything wrong with them and finally has something wrong with him. That's what my doctor lives for. That was over five years ago, and it seems like my health went

downhill after that. Not too much, just enough to be aggravating. I did spend several days in the hospital. I had a heart attack and had to have a stent put in. I had the Covid episode, which kept me locked in my house for two weeks. In spite of all of that, I seem to be getting back to some good health. I still have to have regular six-month physical checkups. I have a series of doctors that I have to see, and that just is life. Last week, for example, I had my six-month appointment to see my heart doctor. I had some tests taken a week before, and he was going to review them for me at this appointment. He went through all of the regular processes, examined my report, and finally, he was finished. As he was closing up my file, he simply said, "Sir, you are good."

I looked at him and said, "What did you say doctor?" "I said, you were good." Looking at him and then back at my wife, who was with me, I said, "Doctor, could you repeat that last word for me so my wife can hear it?"

He looked at me, my wife, and then laughed and said, "good." I looked over at my wife, who was not smiling then, and said, "My dear, did you hear what the doctor said? Do you need the doctor to repeat it?"

Looking at me with no smile, she said, "I heard everything the doctor said." As we left the doctor's office, I smiled and said as I walked out, "I'm good." Let's see how The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage can handle that one.

For many years my favorite Bible verse has been, Proverbs 17:22, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” I realize there are many problems in life, but my focus should not be on that, but on the God who is bigger than any problem I might have. My faith in God creates a merry heart in my life.

The Des Arc Eagles scored early and often in beating Hazen 46-8 on Friday night.

The Eagles played the game with heavy hearts after the loss of the parent of one of the players and the untimely death of former quarterback Cache Flanagan.

After a lot more discussion, a motion was approved to reject all current bids and blueprints. New bids will be received on blueprints without the commercial kitchen equipment.

“We are reminding owners of tax-delinquent parcels that the redemption period changed in 2023,” Land said. “Parcels must be redeemed by 4 p.m. on the last business day before the sale date. We must receive the petition to redeem and the payment by that time.”

Auction sales are final, he emphasized. Bidders must register for the auction before placing

a bid. Purchases may be paid for with a business or personal check, or a credit or debit card. Cash is not accepted for purchase of tax- delinquent parcels. Properties that do not sell at auction will appear on the COSL’s post-auction sales list 30 days after the auction date. From there, they can be purchased through an online auction system.

Another instructional video on the COSL website demonstrates that process to bidders.

Owners of delinquent parcels may redeem those delinquent taxes online at www.cosl.org using a credit or debit card. Those who prefer to pay by check or money order can print a Petition to Redeem from the website or call the office at 501324-9422 to request the petition, which must accompany their payment.

Owners seeking to redeem within 30 days before an auction must use certified funds or may redeem with cash in our office at 1020 W. 4th Street in Little Rock. Cash is only accepted for redemption, and only for

Hornets

front,” he said. “We knew it was going to be hard to match up with them. I feel like we could have played a little better. A couple of times, I felt like we let up a little bit and allowed them to score.

“At times we played all right, about as good as we can possibly play.”

The Eagles host Class 4A Bald Knob on Friday night.

“Bald Knob presents from challenges,” Barbaree said. “I think Coach Lonnie Roberson brings a great level of intensity and coaches them to be fundamentally sound. Up front, they’ll present us some challenges, and their passing game will put strain on our defense because of the way they’re built. But if our guys maintain the focus we’ve had, we will compete with anyone.”

After two tough games to start the season, both the Carlisle Bison and Hazen Hornets will be idle this week.

Carlisle is 2-0 after beating Drew Central and Junction City. Hazen is 0-2 after losses to Conway Christian and Des Arc.

Calrisle coach Gary Wilson said the off week is coming at a good time with Des Arc looming in the next game.

“We don’t have any injury problems but that was a really physical game [against Junction City],” he said. “I’m glad we have this week to kind of recover. And with Des Arc running the flexbone, it gives us an extra week to prepare for that too because

that is not something that we’re going to see any other time this year. Preparation is a little different for that.

“So, it’s coming at the perfect time.” Besancon agrees with Wilson.

“It’s coming at a good time,” Besancon said. “It will give us a chance to refocus and figure out

what some of our issues are. We knew some of them going in. We’re not very big. We’re going against these teams that have so much size. It’s really hard for us to match up with teams like Des Arc, which is so big and just runs the ball right at you.” Hazen will host McCrory on Sept. 20.
