On Thursday, August 25, 2016, an international study group sponsored by the International Fertilizer Development Center headquartered in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, stopped in the Grand Prairie area as part of their studies. IFDC is a non profit, science-based organization working to alleviate global hunger and poverty by improving sustainable agricultural p r o d u c t i v i t y . Participants included farmers, agronomists, soil scientists,
researchers, extensionists, as well as policymakers from various governments and ministries. The group included professionals from Australia,China, Dominica, Ethiopia, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, and Uganda. Having already completed stops in Alabama and Tennessee, the group arrived in Arkansas where Mr. Dennis Carman, Director of the White River Irrigation District accompanied them as they toured UAPB Vegetable Farm, Tri-State Fertilizer Supply, and the Rice Research Center in Stuttgart. They then
traveled to the Kerksieck Brothers’ Farm in Ulm. The group’s final stop of the day was the Slovak Parish Hall for a reception and dinner hosted by members of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. The cooks made sure that the needs of the foreigners were met with a menu that included baked catfish and chicken, several rice dishes, a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits as well as gluten-free entrees. Many in the group expressed their amazement at the bountiful dishes provided, going so far as taking
pictures from a recipe provided by Mrs. Dorothy Clayton of Tollville. Copies of the recipe were requested and provided to the group. After dinner, the participants introduced themselves and spoke of their country, their occupations, and the goals of their organization. With many take-out boxes of food provided for their trip back to their hotel, the group departed for Little Rock. They will continue on to Missouri, Iowa, and Washington, D.C.

For many, yields continue to be variable. Much of our results seem to still be related to planting date and ultimately when the rice we planted was flowering – before or during the heat of late July. Those fields that were able to outrun the heat are performing pretty well – below expectations but average to above average. Those fields that ran right into the heart of high temperatures continue to experience a large amount of blank kernels. There are other fields where blank kernels don’t necessarily seem to be the issue, maybe pointing to a change in the results we’ve been seeing. However, there has been a noticeable effect all year
long of compaction having an effect on fields and that may also be lowering some yields whether the heat was a factor or not. The majority of that harvest progress is south of I40 but the north will be catching up quickly as long as conditions remain favorable.
Milling yields still leave something to be desired. The average so far is probably somewhere around 50% head rice meaning further reductions in price received – extremely disheartening given the already low prices. On top of that, the rice that is yielding that flowered ahead of the heat went through grain fill during the heat, meaning grain chalkiness is up. Open weather and rapid harvest progress
has keep prices subdued but supported, with closing prices staying above $9.52 this week. The trade is closely following field reports of disappointing yields. Thus, traders are anxiously waiting for Monday’s USDA supply/demand and Crop Production reports. These will be released at 11:00 a.m. central on September 12.
Absentee Ballots To all the voters in Prairie County you may begin requesting absentee ballots for the General Election. You will need to call the DesArc Clerk’s Office at 870-256-4434 for this request.

Senior Hornets Fall to Clarendon in Close Game
The Hazen Hornets battled the Clarendon Lions Friday night at home. Although the Hornets closed the point gap in the second half, it was not enough to secure a win. This 30-34 defeat makes the current Hornet season 0-2, 0-1 in conference.
Clarendon opened the first quarter with a score against Hazen, and a failed extra point began the game 0-6 Clarendon. Another score and failed 2-point conversion extended the Lion lead 0-12. A 25yard run by Duck and no-good conversion attempt put the Hornets
on the board 6-12. In the second quarter, a Clarendon touchdown and good 2-point set the score at 6-20. Late in the quarter, a blocked punt and fumble recovery in the end-zone by Mills and Bonds shortens Clarendon's lead to 14-20 after the conversion. A 60-yard run by
Pargo in the third and good conversion put Hazen ahead 22-20. The Lions soon fired back with a touchdown, giving them the lead again 22-26. In the final quarter, a touchdown pass by Clarendon and good 2point try extended Clarendon's lead 22-34. VanHouten's pass to
Pargo and the conversion cut into the Lion lead 30-34 with 4:40 remaining in the game. Although the Hornets tried desperately to score once more, the clock caught them in the end. This game was the first in conference for
Hazen, making the Hornet's 0-1 as of now. Clarendon's players certainly displayed much talent Friday, but attitude and sportsmanship definitely went to Hazen's athletes. The Hornets will travel to Barton this Friday to try to defeat the Bears and secure a win.

Junior Hornets Dominate Junior Lions in 40-0 Game Victory
Last Thursday, the Hazen Junior Hornets traveled to Clarendon to play the Lions. The 44-0 win hardly seemed like a fair game when watching the Hornets score time and again. This victory extends Hazen's current win streak to 20 for the season, and 12-
0 overall. The first quarter Thursday night began with a 55-yard run by Penn and a good 2-point conversion to make the score 8-0 Hazen. Quickly thereafter, a 25-yard run by Green and conversion extended the
lead to 16-0. A calledback Hornet touchdown was quickly followed by a connection from Toll to his receiver Grey for a total of about 60 yards and 8 more points for a score of 24-0. In the second quarter, Mills intercepted the ball and ran 24 yards for a defensive
touchdown. A good conversion put the score at 32-0 Hazen. After 2 called-back touchdowns, Toll kept the ball for 16.2 yards, and a failed 2-point try ended the half at 38-0. A 15-yard run by McAdoo in the third quarter set the final score at 44-0 for
the Hornets. This enormous lead once again allowed several of the 7th graders to play the final quarter and finish out the game. Hazen once again showed its dominance last Thursday, winning its second strait shutout
this season and fourth going back to last season's game against Des Arc. This is quite an achievement for the Junior Hornets. They will attempt to keep this record going as they travel to Lonoke to play the Jackrabbits this Thursday.
